welcome back big guy Patriots sign Alan Branch to new two-year dealPosted by Darin Gantt on March 9, 2017, 1:35 PM EST Alan Branch is on a little bit of a hot streak. According to Mike Giardi of CSNNE.com, the Patriots are finalizing a two-year contract with the veteran defensive lineman. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network says that’s it’s worth “up to” $12 million, at a time when all the numbers are inflated by the people who provide them. Branch has been steady for the Patriots, and late last season, avoided a four-game suspension for a violation of the substance abuse policy after a successful appeal. At 32, he’s still a very good run defender, and he has played consistently for the Patriots. profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/03/09/patriots-sign-alan-branch-to-new-two-year-deal/

Alright, so I really like the way the Patriots are setting up this Malcolm Butler situation.
I think they want to keep him. But I think they're covering their bases.
Right now, here are you scenarios.
Butler gets an offer sheet that the Patriots want to match. They have Butler and Gilmore locked up long term. Win Butler gets an offer that the Patriots don't match. They have Gilmore as the contingency plan for Butler and they get a first round pick in return and/or trade him for Brandin Cooks. Butler doesn't sign anywhere and returns to the Pats on his last year at short money. Pats go into 2017 with one of the best CB tandems in the league. They go into next off-season with the option to revisit talks with Butler, or franchise him.
The first scenario is my ideal outcome, but none of these scenarios scream disaster to me.

really dont want to lose Butler now Logan Ryan heads to TitansPosted by Mike Florio on March 9, 2017, 11:42 PM EST With the top two cornerbacks in free agency off the market, corner number three can do a deal. And he is. Former Patriots cornerback Logan Ryan has agreed to terms with the Titans, according to his agents, Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod. No details have been disclosed. Ryan’s path to the Patriots expired when they signed Stephon Gilmore. With Gilmore and A.J. Bouye under contract, Ryan was the next best corner on the market. profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/03/09/logan-ryan-heads-to-titans/

Panthers trade Kony Ealy to Patriots
Posted by Darin Gantt on March 10, 2017, 3:59 PM The Panthers brought back the franchise’s top two sackers this offseason. So today, they traded a guy they were hoping might join that list. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Panthers have traded defensive end Kony Ealy to the Patriots along with a third-round pick, and will get New England’s second-round pick in return. Speculation began to brew earlier in the day that Peppers’ return could make Ealy expendable (Bill Voth of Black and Blue Review mentioned it), but the destination remains a surprise. Ealy, a former second-rounder, had an MVP-level performance in Super Bowl 50, tying a Super Bowl record with three sacks and a forced fumble. But given a chance to follow up and get a big payday from the Panthers, he only had five sacks last season. This will put the Panthers back in the market for some young pass-rush, even with bringing Julius Peppers and Charles Johnson back, along with 2016’s leading sacker Mario Addison. And with the Panthers trading him for eight spots of draft stock (72 to 64), it shows the value they put on him entering the last year of his contract. profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/03/10/panthers-trade-kony-ealy-to-patriots/

Not going to pretend that i know much about him, but the word around now is that he's an undersized defensive end, pass rush specialist. Played the game of his life in the Super Bowl vs the Broncos two years ago. I think they said he had 3 sacks, an INT and a forced fumble

I see no downside for the Pats
He sucks, you lost 8 spots in a draft
He's great and demands monster money, you let him walk after helping your team out and pick up the compensatory pick
Fuck
Dammit Gettleman...surely another team would've made a similar deal
