Patriots Offer Malcolm Butler First-Round TenderMarch 7, 2017 5:52 PM BOSTON (CBS) — The Patriots have offered a first-round tender to pending restricted free agent cornerback Malcolm Butler just two days before the NFL’s free agency period begins on Thursday at 4 p.m. The news comes after the Patriots also tendered offers to tackle Cameron Fleming, cornerback Justin Coleman, and tight end Matt Lengel. Butler’s first-round tender is worth $3.91 million. If Butler becomes a restricted free agent, any team who would potentially sign him to an offer sheet would now have to send the Patriots a first-round pick as compensation if they declined to match the offer. The news is significant for the Patriots and Butler – not necessarily because of the first-round compensation, but because the two sides still do not appear close to reaching an agreement on a long-term contract extension. Butler is now likely to hit restricted free agency on Thursday and become a candidate for an offer sheet. boston.cbslocal.com/2017/03/07/patriots-offer-malcolm-butler-first-round-tender/ beat me to it! Bolded part sucks, they have to freaking pay some of these guys or it's right back to the crappy D of a few years ago. I dont get it sometimes, took so long to get back to respectable -find good players and now they either trade them off or try to low ball 'em... isn't that the Patriots' way though?

Pats to sign Stephon Gilmore... If he is going to replace Logan Ryan, great signing. If he's to replace Malcolm Butler, Hey they can afford all 3. If anyone offers 4/48 plus a first round pick for Butler, I will be utterly speechless. If it's 4/40, I think the Pats match (depending on the guarantee). Any less, I think Butler doesn't sign the offer.

Stephon Gilmore heading to New England
Posted by Darin Gantt on March 9, 2017, 9:02 AM EST Who says the Patriots won’t spend money? According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore is heading to New England today. (In a side note, it’s hilarious that every tweet of news is coming with “barring any final snags,” but also a recognition that anything can happen until 4 p.m.) Gilmore gives them a shutdown-level cornerback to put across from Malcolm Butler, who got the first-round tender as a restricted free agent. With cornerback Logan Ryan headed to free agency, the Patriots have filled in with a significant upgrade. The former Bills first-rounder was aiming for a huge payday, the kind the Patriots don’t hand out very often. profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/03/09/stephon-gilmore-heading-to-new-england/

I might even go that for Ryan, but I suspect that it will be more. I'm thinking that they got in on Gilmore because they saw where the market was going for Ryan. I like Ryan a lot, and we did fine with him as a #2, but it would make more sense to go longer on Malcolm than him. And with Malcolm coming with a 1st round tax on him, we have a shot.

Huge pick up. I think they'll take a first and let Butler walk if someone offers him the money.

I just can't stress enough how important I feel a true number one cornerback position on this team is. I watched I longer a great defense that won multiple Super Bowls. When he left Asante Samuel picked up some of the ball Hocking duties but he was not nearly the cover Corner that Tyler is. Malcolm Butler is not a ball Hawk. But he is a hell of a cover corner. And he has made a tremendous difference to this Patriots defense. Really it was an extension of what Talib and Revis did.

I am going on the assumption they are signing Gilmore. He'll be a true number 1.

Case history is on your side. Corner is important. Given Gilmore, if he signs Hightower, makes this trade, and gets #12 for JG and uses it on one of the corners, I will sleep ok. Seems a plausible post-Butler path.

The Pats have young emerging receivers. I don't see their need at WR. I think they should invest in another badass TE in the Bennett/Hernandez mold.

Aside from the production, his contract is attractive. I think that's the allure for BFB. I think they're ok for TE from a FA perspective. I'd like to just make sure that there's not too much noticeable dropoff on DL/CB. And like Snoogs, I have far more confidence in BFB drafting DL than CB.

I will sleep okay with that path as well. Huge importance on the "signing Hightower" piece. Ya know... on the off-chance that I was being a bit too subtle with my opinions on him in the past couple days.
