I see the Phillies signed Jeff Francoeur. Why? I mean, I like the guy, but why would Philly want him? To get worse?

That's exactly why the Astros want Robertson. They have two excellent young pitchers and a couple more who are solid end of the rotation types. They need someone reliable to hand the ball off to in late innings. Robertson could be as much as a 5-6 game swing for the Astros. I like the Astros thinking, but I do wonder if when they are truly a legit competitor with all their young talent, if Robertson will be closer to the end of a 4 year deal I think the Astros could be a .500 team as soon as next year. They are loaded with young talent. Texas is washed up. Seattle and Los Angeles are spending their money on gray hairs. Astros and Oakland could own West by 2016.

He was okay for a while there. The Phillies also picked up Xavier Paul & Chase d'Arnaud, signed to minor league contracts. I guess the Phils are scraping the bottom of the barrel over there in Lehigh Valley.

Hope he never sold his house in Pittsburg...
Last offseason A.J. Burnett left the Pirates for the Phillies, but after a rough season in Philadelphia he’s going back to Pittsburgh.
Burnett has signed a one-year deal with the Pirates worth $8.5 million, which is significantly less than the $12.75 million player option he declined to leave the Phillies. (The Phils gave him $ 15 mil last year )
Burnett had a fantastic two-season run for the Pirates in 2012/2013, starting 61 games with a 3.41 ERA and 389 strikeouts in 393 innings, but he went 8-18 with a 4.59 ERA in 34 starts for the Phillies.
At age 38 he’s certainly no sure thing to bounce back, but for $8.5 million and a one-year commitment a reunion with Burnett makes a lot of sense for a Pirates rotation that may lose free agents Francisco Liriano and Edinson Volquez.

Not the best bang for the buck, to be sure.

Compare him to, say, Mike Hampton?? Burnett has been pretty damn good overall. I would think that even Josh Beckett might be a bigger waste overall.

Don't let the door hit ya..............
Torii Hunter made it clear that he wanted to stay in Detroit, at one point saying he’d retire if the Tigers didn’t want him back. He’s mellowed on that stance, opening himself up to other teams, which is good because today Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski all but ruled out a reunion.
Dombrowski told Jason Beck of MLB.com:
We probably won’t re-sign Torii. I called Torii and his representative today and told them that.

A good fit for a team that needs a platoon. And, not a L / R type of platoon, but 2 guys to share D.H & right field duties, with Torii now doing the bulk of the DHing

Bye Dan. Nice knowing ya
Dodgers veteran starter Dan Haren's name has surfaced in trade talks, but it might be interesting to see if he accepts a trade.
While Haren, a Los Angeles area native, doesn't have a no-trade clause, league sources suggest they've heard Haren might be inclined to walk away from baseball if he's traded anywhere besides the Angels. Haren picked up his $10 million player option to go back to the Dodgers, his hometown team.
There would be plenty of interest in Haren -- who is 142-122 lifetime with a 3.77 ERA -- as several teams are looking for a starting pitcher.
The Dodgers are considering just about everything, including lowering their record $240 million payroll, though that isn't definite.
It would be unusual for anyone to retire due to a trade, especially anyone who's only 34 and productive, but it isn't unprecedented.

And, bug surprise, you are right. He does do better. Not a ton better, but still, better. However, I still don't see a good fit there with the White Sox. I think that if the Orioles lose Cruz, then he will be in Baltimore, as he would be a good fit there.
