BigD- Here's a question for you from floffman over at hoopla:
In my league I am currently in second place out of twelve but think I need to improve my SP and maybe add 1 good RP to make a run at the title.
In my keeper league here are the rules:
Can keep 6 to 10 guys that are Major League Keepers
Carry 10 MiLB'er to begin the year and have a draft every off-season to make sure you have 10
Once a MiLB'er exhaust eligibility they become a Farm Keeper. For the first year a Farm Keeper is a Last Round (27th) pick. If you have multiple they then take subsequent picks. A second year Farm Keeper is a 15th round pick.
It is a 6 x 6 Head to Head League:
Batting - R, HR, RBI, SB, Avg., OPS
Pitching - K's, ERA, WHIP, K/9, QS, Hld+SV
My Roster
Batters:
C - Sally Perez 1B - Jose Abreu 2B - Dee Gordon 3B - Martin Prado SS - Starlin Castro IF - Anthony Rizzo RF - Gencarlo Stanton CF - Jacoby Ellsbury LF - Yoenis Cespedes OF - Evan Gattis UTL - Oswaldo Arcia (15th Rounder if Kept) BN - Jed Gyorko (15th Rounder if Kept) DL - George Springer (Last Rounder Next Year) DL - Brandon Belt
Pitching:
SP - Jon Lester SP - John Lackey RP - Brad Boxberger RP - Andrew Miller P - Jake McGee P - Pat Neshek P - Adam Warren BN - Lance Lynn BN - Aaron Harrang BN - RA Dickey BN - Sonny Gray BN - Mike Minor BN - Jesse Hahn BN - Jimmy Nelson
Player I have the rights to and are not on my squad:
P - Jake Odorizzi (Going to add him on Saturday for Harang for his Sunday Start) C - Travis D'arnaud 2B - Jonathan Scoop
Guys on the Farm I could Trade:
Kris Bryant Archie Bradley Jorge Soler Dylan Bundy Alen Hanson
I have these standing offers on the table to improve my pitching, but not sure I want to move Rizzo:
Deal [HASH]1:
Rizzo, Boxberger and my 22nd Round Pick
Grenekie, Ceshek, Clint Fraizer and his 19th Round Pick
Deal [HASH]2:
Rizzo
Either Sale or Bumgardner straight up
Do I take either of those deals or do I take my chances with the squad I have?
I have been lucky in ERA and WHIP so far this year as I am ranked near the bottom but my record is close to .500

Wow. Way to go out of your way Cereal. As he kind of can't thank you for this, I will.
And, I guess he did not get the memo there of my demise.....
Let me chew on this one a bit.

For Floffman
After going over your info, and in respect to the 2 trades you have been offered, I think I would do the Rizzo for Sale trade. It would be the move with the most impact, to be sure. And, as long as Sale remains healthy, this is a very fair move.
Now, onto the stuff I see that you did not ask about.
First, though I see your league is holds and saves,......., did you plan and mean to have no closers? If so, fine. If not, well, it just strikes me as odd that you don;t really have one.
Second, only 1 bench hitter? Maybe your pitching issues caused you to use 7 of your 8 spots on pitching? Again, this is not a huge issue, but, it does look odd, and, it limits the roster moves and changes you can make from week to week. Just something to think about, especially after this trade, as your pitching gets immediately better adding a [HASH] 1 starter like Sale.
Third, funny enough, is 3rd base. Does Gyorko qualify at 3B in your league? If so, you may want to think about starting him over Prado. If not, you may want to turn a bench pitcher into another 3B, or, even a super sub that is 3B elig, along with more. It's the only hitting roster spot that jumps out at me saying " help".
Fourth, about this excess pitching. I would think the guys to consider moving would be, in order, Dickey, Nelson, & Minor. Again, just a thought.
Last, Though now is probably not the time, as he value is likely at a low ebb, but of your guys on the farm, I would consider moving Dylan Bundy. I am starting to hear some bad things about him and his arm, which is never good. If you can now or soon get anything really good back for him, I think you should consider it.
I hope this helps, and, good luck to you the rest of the way.

Oh, to be Jim Johnson. After being DFA'ed by the A's, the tried to find someone, anyone that would take him on. And, they found zero interest in him. So, he has lots of options. In fact, he is free as a bird.
The one option I like, from his point of view, is that he can just go home and sit. Maybe forever. And, he still gets his full $ 10 mil this year from the A's.
If invested wisely, he would not have to work a day in his life again.
Just a thought.....

Yes, very much. They and the A's share that same mindset. And, if OBP was in fact not a factor here, then i'll just have to assume that the A's needed a big name to send to the Sox, and, that Cespedes just filled an OF void for them. So now, as long as Cespedes can help the Sox score 10 runs a night, the Sox could still win some games down the stretch. Sandy Alderson and the Mets ascribe to the moneyball theory in some ways, particularly with the high OBP focus. But this hasn't exactly worked for us. In fact, there were a lot of complaints that the emphasis on taking pitches and drawing walks actually messed up some of the younger guys' plate approaches. Specifically, because they took so much, they were often starting from an 0-1 or 0-2 hole and then waiving pitifully at balls out of the strike zone. So they fired the hitting coach (hudgens) and replaced him with Lamar Johnson, who immediately "clarified" the official stance as "take a pitch, unless it's YOUR pitch." It has definitely freed up some of the guys, especially Lucas Duda, who already had a decent OBP but has started to add to his slugging % as well. d'Arnaud has also started to hit better; however, the team as a whole has a very pedestrian .240 average and .313 team OBP. Duda currently has a higher OPS+ than Miggy. Moving to 1B seems to have helped too, he was awful in LF. At the very least, he's a passable 1B.

And, the fact that he is also OF eligable is a nice bonus.

As it takes me 20 years to make $ 1 mil, I could easily live on 10 for whatever time I have left. And, i'm also coming at this from the angle of hating my job, which is probably not an issue for Johnson.......

Money is too good to pass up Which makes me respect the guys who leave money on the table when they leave, or, just flat refuse to accept funds they would otherwise be entitled to. The latest one was Eric Chavez, who just retired. He wsa due another $ 1 mil, and, all he had to do was to sit on the D/L the rest of this year to get it. It did not seem right to him, so he left now. If only more people in this world would play the game of life this way......

So, after some recent moves, I see that the Red Sox are going to cut a little bait. Pun intended.
Mike Carp reportedly requested a trade from the Red Sox last week, but after failing to find a taker before yesterday’s deadline they’ve designated him for assignment.
It’s still possible that the Red Sox will be able to work out a deal for Carp in the next 10 days, but in the meantime he’s been removed from the 40-man roster and could be headed for the waiver wire.
Carp hit very well for Boston in a part-time role last season, batting .296 with nine homers, 18 doubles, and an .885 OPS in 243 plate appearances, but he batted just .198 this year. Still, as a 28-year-old left-handed hitter with a lifetime .763 OPS you’d think some team could find room for the first baseman/left fielder on their roster

Last week Baseball talking head Tom Verducci floated an idea that was pretty darn harebrained about possibly outlawing defensive shifts because they’re allegedly unfair to hitters. That's right, there is, and should not be, an illegal defense rule in baseball.
However, that said, he ran right into a puddle of irony today, as there was a media related baseball game today, with guys from Boston vs. guys from New York.
And, what happened? While up to bat, the other team put a shift on him!
And, IT WORKED. He hit right into it for an out.
Pretty funny if you ask me.

And so, 2 new era's begin. For tonight's Yankee / Red Sox game, I see Stephen Drew is hitting 8th and playing 2B for the Yankees, while Allen Craig is hitting 5th and playing LF for the Sox.
I wonder if Drew will get booed at all.........?

Ok Trade offered to me:
AL only auction league
I get:
Nelson Cruz (who is a really cheap keeper next year) Nick Markakis Annibel Sanchez (another potential keeper, not as good as cruz)
I give up:
Price (too expensive to keep next year) Hunter (can't keep next year)
Why should I not do this........because I want to click accept right now.
thoughts bigD?

Sox fans hate the Drew brothers for whatever reason.

Not suspicious or anything: Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) could be given clearance to play catch on Monday. The right-hander is reportedly feeling much better in the wake of three platelet-rich plasma injections in his right elbow ...
and...ouch
Pinch-hitting in a game his team was losing 9-4, Paul Goldschmidt took an Ernesto Frieri fastball off his left hand during Friday's game, sustaining a fracture and likely ending the first baseman's season. With an eight-week recovery period, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Goldschmidt's season is "realistically" over.
"He told me, you can figure on eight weeks," Gibson said of team doctor Don Sheridan's diagnosis. "Six to eight weeks, but probably more eight weeks is going to be the way you're going to do it. That's kind of the way the fracture is. If you rush it, you could end up injuring it. Then you do displace the fracture, and you're looking at worse things."
With Arizona's season down the drain and Goldschmidt representing one of the lone bright spots in the desert, the team would be crazy to push Goldschmidt to come back for a few games at the end of September.
If Goldschmidt's season is truly over, it was yet another stellar, if abbreviated, season for the 26-year-old. Goldschmidt batted .300/.396/.542 with 39 doubles, 19 home runs, 69 RBI, 79 runs scored and nine stolen bases in 109 games. He was well on his way to a third straight 20-homer, 10-steal season before Friday's disaster.

John Kruk is apparently not a student of the game -
I didn’t see it, but many have told me that during last night’s Red Sox-Yankees game ESPN put up a graphic that showed the all-time hits leaders. On that list, right behind Derek Jeter, was Honus Wagner. Many people also told me that, when the graphic was displayed, ESPN color man John Kruk said something along the lines of “Not bad for a shortstop . . . He may have the most hits for a shortstop, are any of those guys on that list shortstops?”
Jeter does have the most hits for a shortstop, but how one can look at a list with Honus Wagner’s name on it and not know he too was a shortstop is pretty mind blowing. I mean, he’s only one of the inner-circle all-time greats. Perhaps the best shortstop in baseball history.
I realize that Kruk’s appeal is not based on his encyclopedic knowledge of the game. But given that we’ve pretty much ruled out charisma, strategic insight and general listenability, we’re running out of options here.

After the July 31st trade deadline passed, players must pass through revocable trade waivers in order to be moved to another team.
•The Phillies placed Antonio Bastardo, A.J. Burnett, Roberto Hernandez, Ryan Howard and Kyle Kendrick on revocable waivers, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports (via Twitter). The moves all took place on Saturday, so since the waiver period lasts 47 hours, we could know by today if any of the players were claimed. I’d expect Bastardo and Burnett to be claimed given that both drew significant interest before the July 31st deadline, and there is virtually no chance any team would claim Howard and risk being stuck with the roughly $68MM remaining on his contract.
