DETROIT -- A visit from the reigning world champions has woken up the Detroit Tigers' offense. Now the Red Sox are hoping their offense will get a boost from the return of one of their big bats. First baseman Mike Napoli -- who hasn't played since May 23 because of a sprained finger -- came off the disabled list today and will be back in the lineup tonight as the Sox, losers of five straight, attempt to salvage the finale of their three-game series here. They're 6-for-35 (.171) with runners in scoring position during the losing streak and hope Napoli, whose .390 on-base percentage leads the team, will help them cash in on the scoring opportunities they create. "That type of production has been missed," manager John Farrell told the team's official website of Napoli, later adding: "I think any time you can lengthen the lineup with another quality hitter, it's going to be advantageous for us." Napoli has hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games at Detroit with four homers and seven RBI. * * * * Even with Napoli, the Red Sox could be in for more trouble tonight, given John Lackey's rough recent history versus the Tigers. Lackey (6-4, 3.28 ERA) has struggled in his last five regular-season matchups with the Tigers, going 0-4 with a 5.51 ERA, including a 6-1 home loss May 17 when he gave up six runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. Five Tigers are hitting .387 or better in at least 10 at-bats against Lackey. Miguel Cabrera is 6-for=15 with two homers, while Ian Kinsler is 16 for 38 with four homers. Lackey, though, has been pitching well. He threw 13 1/3 scoreless innings over back-to-back starts before going the distance in a 3-2 loss at Cleveland on Monday. It was just his third complete game since 2010 and the 17th of his career. * * * * Since losing last year's A.L. Championship Series to Boston in six games, Detroit has won all five regular-season meetings between the teams this year while outscoring the Red Sox 27-11. Fourteen of those runs for the Tigers, along with 29 hits, have come in the first two games of this series, including an 8-6 victory Saturday. Detroit had previously totaled 10 runs while losing five straight overall. Cabrera was 3-for-4 on Saturday with two doubles and Nick Castellanos homered while becoming the first Detroit rookie with three straight three-hit games since Rick Peters in 1980. Rookie Eugenio Suarez also homered for his first big-league hit. Cabrera owns an OPS of 1.237 with 30 RBIs over his last 29 regular-season meetings with Boston. * * * * Sanchez (2-2, 2.15) is 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA in four starts since returning from a blister on his middle finger. The first of those outings was a 6-2 win at Boston on May 18, when he allowed one earned run in five innings. He hasn't received a decision in his last two games while receiving one run of support in 15 1/3 innings. Sanchez limited Toronto to two hits in seven scoreless innings in a 5-3 loss Tuesday. * * * * Boston's Xander Bogaerts is batting .386 in his last 10 games and Brock Holt is at .364 during a seven-game hitting streak after both went 2-for-5 on Saturday. * * * * Detroit hasn't swept two three-game series from Boston in the same season since 1987. www.csnne.com/boston-red-sox/red-sox-hope-napolis-return-sparks-change-fortune

Why is Jonathon Herrera in the major leagues?? It appears he doesn't do anything well except maybe field, but only at 2b. agreed. he just looks awful out there. Who actually has looked good out there?

Pinch hitting Herrera for Drew is one of the 7 signs of the apocalypse. Shocked the Sox actually won last night.

People forget xander is all bat, avg defense at best. Thats all we ever claimed him to be. Hes still just like 21. Plan was to move him to third but i dont get it with cecchini probably being there next year.

But you are right boy has he made us all wrong.

I've got nothing on that. It might just have been radio talk show host saying it and not Lackey himself. I didn't get to hear most of the talk about it and only caught bits and pieces At least it is not Jake Peavy, he of the 1 total win so far......

Even though he got paid to sit out a year and agreed to the terms of his contract.. he doesnt count.......he doesnt "exist" anymore They should trade him to low budget team if he doesn't like it. I'm sure getting a SP for that cost could net something on the trade market. Considering what it costs in FA to get even a back end starter these days..

Sox will renegotiate with Lackey and give him an extension which makes next year more palatable for him, but not worth his full FA market value. Think 18-20 mill for 2016 which is an over pay but will compensate him for the year at the league minimum in 2015. Maybe do it for 2016 and 17 at $35-$40.
Win win (if he keeps pitching well).

He's been damn good His WHIP is high for his current ERA. Still plenty of time to normalize. He was better last year peripheral wise.

That's what I am asking.. I am not sure if Lackey is the one saying all of these things or just the media saying, "oh man he can't play for $500K because he has done so much for the Red Sox."

When starting pitcher John Lackey agreed to the five-year contract with the Boston Red Sox, an intriguing clause was embedded into that deal. It states that if Lackey missed a full year due to an elbow injury, the Red Sox could pick up a team option that would pay him the league minimum in salary. That’s an absolute bargain of a deal the Red Sox, or any team, would pick up. However, reports are coming out that Lackey would consider retiring instead of coming back next year and playing for the minimum. Wait, what? The Red Sox would undoubtedly pick up the option on Lackey at the end of the year to play for the $265,000 minimum; it’s a no brainer. There’s no chance in the world any team could sign a quality pitcher like Lackey to that kind of contract. But now these reports come out, and the old John Lackey I hated is starting to creep back. Just who, John Lackey, do you think you are? If I’m not mistaken, you agreed to this contact. Not anyone else. Your name is the one that dried on the dotted line. No one else’s. You were the one who assumed the risk of this option. So now, because it doesn’t satisfy your liking, you’re going to ride off into the sunset and leave that money, and the needs of the Red Sox, out to dry? Cry me a river. The timing of these reports are not a coincidence, either; the trade deadline is fast approaching. The Red Sox are just coming off another losing streak and the time to figure out if they’re buyers or sellers this year is approaching. If the Red Sox were to fall out of contention, Lackey’s name would certainly be thrown around in trade rumors. Add the fact that teams could have him for the minimum once again and his contract look like pure gold. So, Lackey is using this whole retirement angle as leverage. He’s basically saying, “If you trade for me, I want this option torn up and we’ll work out something else.” This is so bush league that it makes me sick. Name me a profession where you can just waltz into your superior’s office and claim, “Well, I know we came to an agreement on my contract, but I don’t like it anymore. So either give me what I want or I’m walking.” Did you come up with a legitimate answer? I doubt it. Lackey needs to be held accountable for what he agreed on and pitch for that option. The Red Sox gave him a generous contract, in my opinion. Lackey has given them quality starts, but also missed a year due to injury. Don’t forget: he still got paid for that year. He should be more than willing to honor his contract. In a time when the Red Sox continue to struggle with finding their character, Boston doesn’t need this distraction of Lackey and the unhappiness with his contract. You signed it, Lackey. Now you honor it. Sorry your elbow didn’t hold up. But I’m sure you didn’t mind collecting those paychecks while you hung around and got to watch the games. I’d take that contract any day. Sizemore's gotta be DFA'd as soon as Vic comes back, no?
I mean the ONLY positive thing you can say about the guy is that he's actually stayed healthy somehow.
What a steal y'all have with Holt...

That's the word on the street. He'll catch on with another team and tear it up. People will wonder how the Sox let him slip through their hands.

Giving up a homer to Ryan Flaherty should be an automatic pull from the game. Guess it doesn't matter cuz the Sox ain't scoring againt King Norris.

I don't think they can or will dump Grady. Vic is no lock to stay healthy and we have INFers in the OF as it is...and I don't just mean Holt...Betts in the minors too...unless they make a move for someone else they cant afford to lose any OFers.
Grady will prolly benefit from not playing so much once Vic gets back...

Hes still just like 21. Plan was to move him to third but i dont get it with cecchini probably being there next year. Cecchini being an MLB 3rd baseman isn't a guarantee by any means though. Cecchini isn't doing too well in AAA right now either. He's batting .263/.345/.320 with 23:48 BB:K, worse than at previous levels (it was 94:86 last year between A+ and AA). www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=cecchi001---What they should do is play Drew at SS and Bogaerts at 3rd when the Sox are playing righties, and Bogaerts at SS and Holt/Middlebrooks at 3rd when playing lefties. Drew can only hit righties and Middlebrooks can only hit lefties.
