Source: Six teams showing ‘legitimate interest’ in Jon Lester 11.12.14 at 3:32 pm ET By Rob Bradford
PHOENIX — According to a major league source, six teams have shown what could be classified as “legitimate interest” in free agent pitcher Jon Lester. The Red Sox are one of those clubs, while the Mariners (the pitcher’s hometown team) are not in the mix.
During a briefing with the Boston media Wednesday at the general managers’ meetings, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said while he did meet with Lester’s representatives Tuesday night, no figures had been exchanged.
“I met with them kind of socially and talked about all sorts of things,” Cherington said. “I expect the conversation will continue. They have to go through their thing. I still feel like the relationships are in place we can have those conversations.”
Cherington also said he doesn’t expect any signings by the end of the week.

I think John Tomase is Rock. Boston Herald Sports @bosheraldsports #ICYMI: #RedSox and @jlester31 are a possibility again. @jtomase tells us how they got back to that point. tinyurl.com/ln5mtmwHonestly not a Boston hating comment I do wonder if there will be any rumblings around the league about some sketchy arrangements from Execs if Lester were to return to Boston

And the answer to that question is probably yes.

Lester is a FA, he is free to sign with anyone......including Boston.

And the answer to that question is probably yes. Yeah, they do seem to offer some opinions that sound more like wishful thinking fan talk, than professionals doing their jobs

There is a rumor floating around that Seattle will trade Michael Saunders and Tijuan Walker to Atlanta for Justin Upton, who recently took Seattle off of his no trade list. The second phase of this scenario would be to give big bucks to one of the FA pitchers. Lester makes the most sense since he is a local guy but I think they like Shields too.

lester to the royals
KANSAS CITY -- It turns out the Wild Card game between the A’s and Royals was a battle of friendly neighbors.
A’s left-hander Jon Lester, who started that do-or-die game for Oakland, owns a farm in Georgia just down the road from Royals manager Ned Yost.
“We’ll get together when we get home,” Yost said before Wednesday’s Game 7 World Series contest against the Giants. “His farm’s about a half a mile from mine.”
The two occasionally go hunting together in the offseason, and they share a groundskeeper who does work on each of their properties. As the postseason was drawing near, Yost’s wife, Deborah, called the groundskeeper about getting some work done on the Yost farm.
The only problem was, Lester also wanted work done on his property, and both he and Yost were hoping to get it done before they returned home for the offseason.
“Right before the Wild Card game, I called Larry (the groundskeeper) and said, ‘Look, you can take your time on mine. But you better hurry up on Jon’s,’” Yost said with a laugh. “That was wishful thinking, and luckily it worked out.”
A’s fans don’t need to be reminded how the AL Wild Card game played out, and why Lester got to his farm first. The A’s jumped out to a 7-3 lead, only to see the Royals mount a comeback (which began with Lester still pitching) and eventually knock off Oakland 9-8 in 12 innings.
It’s unlikely that their friendship would sway Lester, one of this winter’s top free agents, to become a Royal. Kansas City is braced to lose its own ace pitcher, James Shields, to the open market because he’ll get lucrative offers outside of the Royals’ payroll range. Lester also is expected to land a mega-deal somewhere, but it doesn’t figure to be with Kansas City (or Oakland for that matter).

Lester went unnoticed in the CY voting but he had a pretty damn good year. Of all the starting pitchers who got CY votes, Lester had the greatest affect on his team's winning percentage. The difference between his team's record when he started versus his team's record when he didn't start, was the largest difference amoung all pitchers who got a CY vote in the AL.

If you really were serious when you said you would take a hometown discount here is your chance.

That's not going to be enough. Nah, not even close. So they offered upto $20 mil a year for 6 years? Yeah, that's gonna get blown out of the water by someone.
