Ryan Dempster has retired from baseball. Dempster sat out the entire 2014 season due to neck issues and a desire to spend more time with his family, and he will not pursue a contract this winter. The 37-year-old right-hander registered a 4.35 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 7.8 K/9 in 2,387 career major league innings. He played 16 seasons, for five different major league clubs. Does that mean that we will no longer see him on MTB.tv, with his hideous to ridiculous suits anymore? Oh, he wants to spend time with his family, just not THAT MUCH time, and, he wants to keep drawing a nice check in the process. Best of luck to Ryan. Guy signed autographs in the street for an hour one night. Left a good impression on me

Guess what? John Rocker is still an idiot. For those of you not in the know, Rocker is a contestant on the current season of Survivor. I will assume even those who don't watch it pretty much know how it works. To breakdown last night's episode, Rocker, after admitting right in front of all of his teammates that he was trying to help a guy on the opposing team, becomes a huge target to be voted out. He even knows this. But, he has an immunity idol, so he has his safety right in his pocket.
And, it remained there, after he was voted out, without using the idol.
Idiot.
At least he has decent choice in women, as his girlfriend is pretty hot.

Heard some hair-brained schemes yesterday on ESPN 710AM yesterday BigD. Trade Kershaw.....lol
Best pitcher in the game bar none with no salary cap restrictions.....and let's trade a 26 year old BEAST!
- I could imagine trading Puig, as I'm not sure about his age and if he's well liked in the clubhouse.....he's at least polarizing.
- I could also see firing Mattingly, but I think he'll get one more year.
- I'd just try to get rid of Ethier on Boston and go with Joc Pederson.

That's the thing about journalism now, or what passes for it. Folks have learned that the masses tend to not hold guys to any kind of high standard when it comes to the accuracy or viability of their reports. As such, it is not uncommon for folks to put stuff out like the Kershaw item. While on one hand it is kind of hair brained, on the other, it is so out there, that people would read and notice. As for the rest of your post, maybe we could package Ethier and Mattingly to a team that needs a manger, and a "name" but IMO "lesser than" OF guy. Maybe to the Astros, for any promising catching prospect they may have in the low minors now. I would do it.

Unlike some past celebs, his i.d was outed in the first few days. A father/son duo from the south, who are Braves fans, where the first in the know. And, when the son tried to call him out, he first said he was John Wettland. I myself thought it was a nice dodge. Unfortunatlly for him, all of everyones memories of him were negitive, which lead to his downfall. And, with my thought being based around this, I doubt he has much if any of the $ 5 mil he got from his 6 year MLB career left.

The more I think about this, the more I like this idea. That said, the All Star game weekend is already pretty full.
But still, as a contrast to the home run derby, how about a race around the bases? Invite guys like Billy Hamilton and Terrance Gore, in Gores case a guy who would not otherwise be involved in the festivities.
Have them stand in the batters box. It could start with bat in hand and in a batting stance or not. At GO, the guy would be clocked to see how fast he could run back home.
It's quick and easy, unlike the H.R derby.
Anyone?

Its way too much but in a similar fashion, I would love to see 3 things: 1) Swing at a lob from a pitcher and get to first as fast as you can. 2) I love stolen bases, so I would love to see that incorparated somehow 3) In the honor of the NBA slam dunk, you could judge different slides into 2nd

I think they could add only one new option or wrinkle, or, they would have to take an existing event away.

It was 18 years ago today that, with the Yankees trailing 4–3 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Derek Jeter ties the game with a deep fly ball to right field that is ruled a home run by umpire Rich Garcia, despite the protest of outfielder Tony Tarasco and Orioles manager Davey Johnson, who claim there was spectator interference that prevented the ball from being caught. Video replay clearly shows 12-year-old Jeffrey Maier reaching over the fence and deflecting the catchable live ball into the stands, forever changing the outcome of Game 1 of the ALCS, and many believe of the series.

He just can't seem to beat them, or even pitch well against them. I have no idea as to the why, but there is now enough sample size to call this a trend and thing.

After it was announced that somehow, Cowboy Joe West was going to umpire in the ALCS, ESPN's Rob Neyer found and chimed in with this info on twitter. Among 50 umpires with at least 2500 ball-strike calls this season, #ALCS crew chief Joe West ranks dead last www.businessweek.com/graphics/baseballs-worst-call-of-the-day/#/umpires/ranking/2014 … He is the most senior umpire out there now, which just has to be the # 1 critera for selection. It sure can't be talent and skill.....

The Royals deserve all the props that they may get. The Tigers somehow creamed them head to head in the 2014 regular season. But the Royals are awesome. Seven steals in the Wild Card game. Bunts that worked. Air-tight defense. What a clinic they put on, as a warm-up to dismantling the team with the best record in MLB in the ALDS (Angels). Baltimore is equally impressive. Again, the Tigers creamed them in the regular season. But that was before the prematurely celebrating Tigers (early, ya THINK...it was mid-May with the gawdamned ZUBAS!). Leyland would have CRUSHED that. The Orioles more than made up for things in the totally one-sided ALDS. Buh bye Ass-much (Ausmus). Wishful thinking. I'd LOVE to see Ron Gardenhire in Detroit, but that is highly unlikely. Well then, if nothing else Dumb-rowski (trades away Doug Fister for a bag of used BP balls), GET RID of Soria, Coke and Chamberlain. Sign Pat Neshek as soon as the Cardinals post-season is over. Like Halloween? I see I am not the only one who wishes they had a new guy to captian their teams ship.......

I root hard for every single one of these guys. Baseball always needs more knuckleballers!
Interesting story here from Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca about Dan Johnson, who has been on the fringes of the major leagues for the past few seasons as a position player/designated hitter. Now 35 years old, he has begun to think about his baseball mortality. Part of his plan to stick around? The knuckleball.
Yes, Johnson is trying to develop a knuckleball in order to be a “two-way” player. This isn’t exactly a new thing for him. Johnson has messed around with the pitch for years, but he began thinking about it more seriously in 2013 when he was with the Yankees organization and threw it regularly during side sessions. He was in spring training with the Blue Jays (and R.A. Dickey) this year, but a cracked fingernail prevented him from throwing his knuckleball until later in the year. Still, he continues to work on the pitch and believes that it could help his case for a roster spot.
“My hope was to ultimately become a guy that could do both,” he said. “Essentially if you needed a bat or position player I could do that, and if you’ve got a game that’s maybe getting out of hand, instead of burning up a whole bullpen, being able to go out and throw 70 or 80 pitches and suck up innings.”
“I don’t want to do it as a sideshow. If I’m going to do it, I want to do it right.” Johnson is a free agent right now, but here’s hoping he gets a spring training invite somewhere and a real chance to show what he can do with the knuckler. This could be a lot of fun.

Probably how this kid paid for his college education. To say the ball would be worth something is an understatement.

Pretty interesting. Several surprises but I am not surprised that it is 1) Yankees 2) Giants and 3) Dodgers. Happy to see that the Tigers are over .500, although by very little. I'd like to see where the Orioles are as "just the Orioles" since 1954. Same goes for the Braves since they left Boston for Milwaukee in 1953. The Boston Braves were godawful. The St. Louis Browns were probably even worse.

Probably how this kid paid for his college education. To say the ball would be worth something is an understatement. That is absolutely incredible big D. The kid either made a killing or was crazy like me. I took a baseball that was autographed by all of the members of the 1968 World Championship Tigers and literally "put it in play" in the street for pickup games. Dummy...
