More bad news for the Dodgers.
Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that Brian Wilson has informed the Dodgers that he will exercise his player option for 2015. It’s worth $9.5 million. If his pitching does not improve, Wilson is not, but such is the way of contractual agreements.
Wilson put up a 4.66 ERA and 54/29 K/BB ratio over 48 1/3 innings this season and Don Mattingly seemed pretty afraid of using him in the postseason. If it was a health thing hampering him this year, there’s still a chance for Wilson to profile as solid setup man next season.

The schedule for this season's major awards was announced on Tuesday. As always, the awards will be announced roughly two weeks after the end of the World Series. Here's the schedule:
Monday, Nov. 10: Rookies of the Year Tuesday, Nov. 11: Managers of the Year Wednesday, Nov. 12: Cy Youngs Thursday, Nov. 13: Most Valuable Players
Both the AL and NL awards will be announced on the same day, which is relatively new. In the past each league was given its own day for the Cy Young and MVP.
As a reminder, the BBWAA ballots for the major awards are due after the regular season but before the postseason. The playoffs will not impact the voting. These are regular season awards.

Bryce Harper, Jose Altuve and Justin Morneau have been added to the roster for the upcoming exhibition series between a team of MLB All-Stars and the Japanese national team, MLB announced. They'll play a five-game series in November at several sites in Japan. It has been dubbed the "All-Star Series 2014."
Harper, Altuve and Morneau join Albert Pujols, Robinson Cano, Yasiel Puig and Adam Jones as the only players confirmed for the event so far. Red Sox manager John Farrell will manage the team. He replaced Ron Washington, who unexpectedly resigned as manager of the Rangers last month.
One player who won't be part of the All-Star Series 2014 is now retired Yankees captain Derek Jeter. He reportedly declined an invitation to the event. Can't say I blame Jeter for declining the invitation and I can't say I blame the league for asking either. This is a promotional event and no player in the sport can match Jeter's marquee power. He fills the seats like no other.
The All-Star Series games will be played from Nov. 11-20 in Osaka (Kyocera Dome), Tokyo (Tokyo Dome) and Sapporo (Sapporo Dome). There will also be two exhibition games played in Osaka (Koshien Stadium) and Okinawa (Okinawa Cellular Stadium) in addition to the five-game series.
The rest of the MLB team roster will be announced at a later date. Player availability -- especially pitcher availability -- will depend on the rest of the postseason, I'm sure.

Dear God No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Raiders, in theory, could be leaving the “travesty” of a dirt infield in Oakland for another dirt infield in L.A.
Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times reports that Dodger Stadium is “in play” as a potential temporary location for an NFL team. The venue joins the Rose Bowl and the L.A. Coliseum as potential short-term options while a new stadium is built.
PFT reported on Sunday that the NFL believes it’s 12-24 months away from returning to Los Angeles. The team (or teams, if two) would play in a temporary location at first, since one or more years as a lame duck in a current city would be untenable.
The Raiders, Rams, and Chargers currently are regarded as the primary options to relocate.

A hearty congratulations to the Kansas City Royals for sweeping the Los Angeles Angels and moving one step closer to winning the World Series. You know what that means? More chances for you to head over to their upcoming home games and honor them by stuffing your face with this week’s genius concession concoction. Fortunately, this item also celebrates the three most important food groups known to man (or at least to Extra Mustard): cheese, carbs and bacon. Behold! WHAT IS THIS WITCHCRAFT: Pulled Pork Mac N’Jack Sausage WHO HATH WROUGHT THIS MONSTROSITY?: Kauffman Stadium, home of the Kansas City Royals WHAT COMPRISES SUCH A THING?: Pepperjack sausage topped with pulled pork, spiral mac and cheese and bacon crumbles, served in a bun. Don’t forget the scallions for a sophisticated finish. BUT HOW MANY CALORIES ARE WE TALKING? According to this MyFitnessPal estimate, 804. WELL, HOW MUCH DO I HAVE TO PAY? Just hand over the $10.50.

A sign on the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center appropriately reads: "We're open 'til we close."
Unfortunately for fans of the New York Yankees legend and Hall of Famer, the museum is closed until further notice because criminals have ripped off the place. A team of "professional" burglars stole "several priceless pieces of memorabilia" from Berra's museum in New Jersey, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.
Museum officials and investigators have not said what was stolen because the investigation is in the early stages, and a full accounting needs to be made first.
Montclair State University in Little Falls, N.J., hosts the museum and Yogi Berra Stadium, an adjacent ballpark. The Daily News sources say thieves broke in through the stadium, which is home to the minor league New Jersey Jackals.
Items on display include dozens of baseball cards, two of his MVP Awards and each of the 10 World Series rings he won as a player. There is also the jacket he wore while throwing out the first pitch before Game 1 of the 2009 World Series and love letters he wrote to his wife Carmen the year before they were married.
A new display features broken bats of some of the biggest stars of the 1940s and 1950s, including Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, Willie Mays, Stan Musial and Ralph Kiner.
Sounds like fun — the museum.
Stealing memorabilia seems tricky, and stealing from a museum would seem even trickier, given the difficulties the thieves must encounter when trying to sell the items. They must be next-to-impossible to sell. It appears the crime was commissioned — but by whom, and to what end?
Another motive, of course, is that some bad guy wants it for his/her own private collection. It would have to stay private, though. And what fun is that? Some people. No matter, stealing from Yogi Berra is shameful — unless you're sliding into second base (or home plate) 65 years ago.

Big surprise. NOT!
Madison Bumgarner will start NLCS Game 1 against the Cardinals on Saturday night in St. Louis. Giants assistant general manager Bobby Evans confirmed that decision Wednesday to MLB Network Radio. Bumgarner was fantastic in the Giants' Wild Card Game victory over the Pirates on October 1 and was good again in Game 3 of the NLDS on October 6 versus the Nationals. He'll face off against Cards ace Adam Wainwright to kick off the Championship Series

Michael Morse (oblique) has been participating in instructional league games in Arizona. Morse will be added to the Giants' roster for the NLCS, though manager Bruce Bochy wouldn't commit to a number of games that he'll be allowed to start. The Giants have a hole in left field that was filled in the NLDS by Travis Ishikawa and Juan Perez. Morse could be a huge boost if he's anywhere close to full health.

Ryan Dempster has retired from baseball. Dempster sat out the entire 2014 season due to neck issues and a desire to spend more time with his family, and he will not pursue a contract this winter. The 37-year-old right-hander registered a 4.35 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 7.8 K/9 in 2,387 career major league innings. He played 16 seasons, for five different major league clubs.
Does that mean that we will no longer see him on MTB.tv, with his hideous to ridiculous suits anymore? Oh, he wants to spend time with his family, just not THAT MUCH time, and, he wants to keep drawing a nice check in the process.

Is Francis behaving in here or do I have to kick some ass? He always seems to be on his best behavior when he comes here. So, sorry, no ass to kick in here. He's not like the rest of the daily bunch. He is only Semi-evil. "Well it's true! It's true! You're semi-evil. You're quasi-evil. You're the margarine of evil. You're the Diet Coke of evil. Just one calorie, not evil enough. Because you're not quite evil enough."

The Royals deserve all the props that they may get.
The Tigers somehow creamed them head to head in the 2014 regular season. But the Royals are awesome. Seven steals in the Wild Card game. Bunts that worked. Air-tight defense. What a clinic they put on, as a warm-up to dismantling the team with the best record in MLB in the ALDS (Angels).
Baltimore is equally impressive. Again, the Tigers creamed them in the regular season. But that was before the prematurely celebrating Tigers (early, ya THINK...it was mid-May with the gawdamned ZUBAS!). Leyland would have CRUSHED that. The Orioles more than made up for things in the totally one-sided ALDS.
Buh bye Ass-much (Ausmus). Wishful thinking. I'd LOVE to see Ron Gardenhire in Detroit, but that is highly unlikely.
Well then, if nothing else Dumb-rowski (trades away Doug Fister for a bag of used BP balls), GET RID of Soria, Coke and Chamberlain.
Sign Pat Neshek as soon as the Cardinals post-season is over. Like Halloween?

Here we go again....
The NLDS in St. Louis featured protests outside the stadium connected with the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. You be certain that the NLCS will feature more of the same — likely much, much more, actually — as another police shooting of a black teenager occurred last night, this time in St. Louis itself. From the Post-Dispatch:
Another police-involved fatal shooting of a teenager, this time in south St. Louis not far from the Missouri Botanical Garden, led to hours of protests overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning as an angry crowd gathered quickly when news spread across social media.
St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said the officer was off-duty, working a secondary job for a private security company, when he fatally shot an 18-year-old male Wednesday night. The police say that the victim, Vonderrit Myers Jr, 18, was armed and fired at the officer first. Witnesses dispute the account, saying he was unarmed and only had a sandwich in his hand. The officer — who was off duty but in uniform, working a contract security job — fired his weapon at Myers 17 times. Needless to say, given what happened in nearby Ferguson, both in the Brown shooting and the events that unfolded thereafter, people will be forgiven for not taking the police at their word as to what transpired.
Also needless to say, the protests in St. Louis will be large and intense. And given the national focus on St. Louis for the baseball playoffs, it is inescapable that, in some fashion, the events of last night and the coming days will intersect with the NLCS.
