It'll take Derek Jeter two innings of work to pay taxes that may be due on gifts the retiring New York Yankees' captain received during his farewell tour.
Jeter, who was paid $12 million this season and more than $265 million in his career, will owe about $16,000 in state and federal taxes on the gifts, which included golf clubs, wine, vacation packages, two sets of cowboy boots and a kayak, according to Rob Raiola, a certified public accountant who specializes in sports and entertainment.

The 40-year-old Jeter received about $33,000 worth of gifts from opposing teams, only one of which, the Tampa Bay Rays, would say how much they paid -- more than $6,000 -- for the 16-foot, custom-painted kayak presented on Sept. 16. Jeter owns a home in Tampa, Florida. The value for other gifts are approximations using websites, expert and comparable products.
The Reds gave Jeter gifts that harken back to their June 3, 2003 game in Cincinnati, which is where New York made him the 11th captain in franchise history. The Reds gave the five-time World Series winner framed jerseys autographed by the team's two captains, Dave Concepcion and Barry Larkin, along with three photos taken the day he was named captain.

"We hope the value is priceless to Derek," Reds spokesman Rob Butcher said.
The calculation for taxes owed used a blended 7 percent figure for states that have income tax where he received the gift, said Raiola, the sports and entertainment senior group manager in the Cranford, New Jersey office of O'Connor Davies, LLP.
Jeter's former teammate, Robinson Cano of the Seattle Mariners, gave him a $34,000 watch. Any individual can give a gift to another individual and the recipient, no matter the value, wouldn't pay tax. The Mariners franchise on June 10 gave Jeter a seat from the Kingdome, where the shortstop made his major-league debut on May 29, 1995, and where he got his first hit the following day.
Many clubs made a donation to Jeter's Turn 2 Foundation, which isn't taxable income.
The Yankees during a Sept. 7 tribute gave Jeter a massage therapy machine that, according to the company's website, is worth $600. The team also gave Jeter a 10-day trip to Italy and a custom-made Waterford Crystal.
Team spokesman Jason Zillo said he didn't know details of the trip or how much the Yankees spent on the items.
Boston Finale The Yankees haven't said whether they intend to give Jeter additional gifts at his final home game in two days. The Yankees finish the season on Sept. 28 at Boston. Zineb Curran, a spokeswoman for the Red Sox, said in an e-mail the Yankees' chief rival plans to give Jeter "a few" gifts during the finale.
"The gifts have more sentimental value than monetary value," she said without being specific.
If the gifts are determined to have been made out of "detached and disinterested" generosity, out of affection, respect or admiration, they wouldn't be taxable to Jeter, Raiola said. Jeter, however, did partake in ceremonies, allowing the clubs to use his appearance in their marketing.
Jeter could avoid having to pay taxes by rejecting the gifts. His agent, Casey Close, declined to comment on the gifts or what Jeter might do with them.

These farewell tours are ridiculous. Who gives an opposing player a gift?
Fuck Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. Used to respect those guys.

Pretty good pitching matchup tonight, Bumgarner vs. Greinke. One now I need the Dodgers to win, but, at the same time, I am not super confident about. And, to think that I was rooting for a Giants W last night! The Giants let me down though, as I only needed said win if it was going to be earned and given to Peavy. Once he was out of the mix, I put my Dodger hat back on. Fun with fantasy sports and sports fandom!

Not something you see every day. From last night, here is Neftali Feliz fielding his own wild pitch.

Betances better than Rivera? With 2 K's in the 8th (131 & 132), Dellin Betances passes Mariano Rivera for #Yankees single-season record for strikeouts as a reliever! greatest ever!!!!!!!!

Don't think that just because I am in the Eastern Time Zone that I do not watch these games if they are available.
Tonight after watching the Tigers stay mercifully in first, I tuned in to the Giants-Dodgers tilt.
Great move.
Great game.
The two best "hitting" pitchers in the game face off, along with Zach and Madison being among the game's best "pitching" pitchers!
Alas, Madison Bumgarner hit a two-run shot vs. the great Z. But the great "Z" outpitched him.
Because Justin Turner showed up.
This is why you got to LOVE pennant race baseball.
I have no "dog" in the race. But I got to love LA with the great Kershaw going Wednesday.
But who knows? This is why they play the games.
But I hope SF gets a wild card because it would be awesome theate to see a Dodgers-Giants matchup in the playoffs!

Don't look now, but there I guess is a good chance that Jeter's last home game will both be rained out, and then, not made up.
Wouldn't that be a wicked pisser!?!

We all know that, if a 3rd stike id dropped by the catcher, that you have a chance still to be safe at first, if said catcher does not throw you out. Well, sometimes, if the stars allign just right, you can even make it to 3rd.

The Diamondbacks have decided to make pitching great Dave Stewart an offer to become their next GM, sources close to the team said.
Arizona selected Stewart after interviewing nine candidates and sources suggest it will try to make a deal with him to replace Kevin Towers, who was let go. There is no word that a deal is done yet, or even that the offer officially has been made, so nothing is official yet.
Word is that Tony La Russa, Arizona's new chief baseball officer, believes Stewart can help bring a better winning culture to the Diamondbacks.
Stewart and La Russa have kept a close relationship since their days together in Oakland. Stewart posted four straight 20-win seasons for La Russa's championship A's teams. Stewart was seen as the favorite from the start based on La Russa's long-held belief he'd make a great GM and deserves a chance.
Stewart has been working as a top agent following careers as a starting pitcher, coach and front office executive. To accept an offer to become GM, he'd have to give up his agent business, so he may have a tough call to make.
It has been reported an announcement would come Thursday, but that is not a certainty at this point.
Stewart currently represents Dodgers star Matt Kemp, Astros star Chris Carter and several other major leaguers and has talked about hoiw much he loves his current job. However, becoming a GM has been a dream of Stwart's, as well, and he narrowly missed out tice before, in Toronto and Milwaukee.
Top Dodgers executive DeJon Watson and top Red Sox exec Allard Baird are also seen as finalists for the job. Bob Nightengale of USA Today suggested the Diamondbacks might bring Watson on board, as well, and Watson is extremely highly-regarded by Arizona. If the Diamondbacks and Stewart don't make a deal, presumably one of the other finalists would be in line to get the job.
Towers was dismissed but has been offered a job within the organization. A Stewart hiring might increase his chances to stay as Towers is close to Stewart, who was his pitching coach in San Diego.

It is funny to think that a Braves search committee consisting of three old-time, all-time great baseball minds was formed, and after assembling their collective genius the trio looked no further than the committee room door, coming together to come up with one of the committee members.
Then again, John Hart, committee leader and allegedly "interim" GM, may be a perfect choice to be the Braves' honest-to-goodness GM, at least for a while.
Hart's “interim” tag was his call in the first place, and it appears now the other ultra esteemed committee members who include Braves president John Schuerholz and Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox may be leaning on Hart to stay longer -- a bit longer anyway. And Hart, who has always told his colleagues he has had the "perfect life," and often turned down other opportunities, at age 66 appears to be seriously considering taking the real GM job according to someone who's spoken to him -- for a little while, anyway.
He indeed has the perfect life, with a nice gig at the MLB Network, a part-time role working for the Braves and his best friend in baseball in Schuerholz, and time for his near-scratch golf game and beloved family. But this perfect life might yet be trumped by the perfect opportunity.
With the Braves, he has a team with a wonderful tradition, an operation he has called the "golf standard," a nice young foundation, and a pitching staff with some serious talent. He also has a manager he seems to like in Fredi Gonzalez, and an up-and-coming potential GM John Coppolella he likes very much. He also has Schuerholz, so close to Hart he always seemed like his partner even all those years they worked in opposite leagues.
Folks were already lining up for the Braves' GM job in the day after it came open with the firing of Frank Wren, but Hart maybe the perfect short answer. He was going to help through the transition period anyway, so why not just extend that period from a month or two to perhaps a year or two? That would give him time to get the Braves back and running as a World Series threat, and time to groom a successor, who would seem to be the 36-year-old Coppolella.
Braves people spoke of wanting to change the culture that became disharmonious to many of them, even uncomfortable by some accounts, and the easy going Hart would work perfectly. Some Braves people already have noticed a different sort of energy.
Hart always has been known for building staffs as well as teams, and he has groomed more fine young GMs than almost everyone else put together over the past 20 years -- from Mark Shapiro to Jon Daniels to Josh Byrnes to Dan O'Dowd to Chris Antonetti. Coppolella, who appears to have won the respect of Schuerholz as a worker and thinker, looks like the next candidate.
Hearing the news that Hart could stay longer than an interim tag normally implies, which was first mentioned by Jeff Passan at Yahoo, some of his old protégés could almost be heard cheering. "Good for him," one said. Let's not forget, this fellow added, "John Hart is really good."
There is no doubt: Hart knows how to build a team.
And it's no small thing that he knows how to build an offense, which appears to be something the Braves badly need now. Hart's teams often had powerhouse lineups that overwhelmed the opposition. The Indians' batting orders in the '90s ranked with the best over the past several decades.
Hart is as qualified to do the GM job as anyone, and there's no question, even a decade and a half after receiving his first AARP card, he has the energy.
The only real question is: Will he take the (full-time) job?
