This is cool. Shohei Otani of the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters just became the first player to win 10 or more games as a pitcher and hit 10 or more home runs during the same season. No one has ever done that in Japan. The only U.S. major leaguer who ever did it was Babe Ruth, who won 13 games and had 11 homers back in 1918. Otani is only 20, by the way. He also throws 100 miles per hour, which suggests that he’ll probably take the opposite career path from Ruth: moving to full-time pitching instead of full-time hitting. Because while this is fun and neat and all, the NPB is competitive enough, one assumes, that a generalist like that can’t continue to be a generalist and that Otani’s days off from pitching may be better spent developing a consistent routine as opposed to being his team’s DH. Also worth nothing that the Fighters aren’t a very good team this year. If and when they improve or Otani plays for a better club, there will likely be better hitting options than him. Still: cool. if he throws 100MPH he'll probably be in MLB soon

Guts and grit can only take one so far......
Dustin Pedroia returned last week from a concussion, but now he’s dealing with a left wrist injury and Alex Speier of WEEI.com reports that the Red Sox may decide to shut the second baseman down for the rest of the season.
According to manager John Farrell an MRI exam showed inflammation and he’ll be examined further to determine if surgery is needed. It’s a problem he’s been playing through for most of the season.
Pedroia has hit a career-low .278 with seven homers and a career-worst .712 OPS in 135 games after posting an OPS above .780 in each of his first seven full seasons. He’s owed another $97 million through 2021 as part of a contract extension signed last July.

As there is nothing and nobody else here - What would be the correct term to describe what comes after "completely and totally bored out of my mind", but just before literaly "bored to death"?
I am always looking for help with that one, just so I can have a good term or phrase to use when someone at work asks me how I am doing.
And now, back to the sound of 1 hand clapping...............

As it stands as of today, the A's would make the playoffs. But, if they're overtaken before the end of the season, they will be the first team in the Wild Card era to miss the postseason after boasting the best record at the All-Star break.

Then when I was 13 I sucked. At 14 I got drafted to Senior League and sucked again. When 15 I hit .291, not bad. At 16 I hit around .250. When 17 I got disgusted with myself and hung em up. Next time I will tell you about my illustrious softball career for giggles.

As hitting a baseball was always beyond me, and, as I could hide my lack of arm at 1B, I had a pretty good long run of competitive softball myself. Until I really started to break down, around 40, and decided to quit before I became just average, or lesser than.

Talk about way under the radar good -
Last season Yusmeiro Petit missed throwing a perfect game by one batter. Last month he set the all-time record for consecutive batters retired with 46. And last night he threw an 84-pitch complete game.
Not bad for a 29-year-old former prospect bust turned journeyman turned rotation regular for the Giants, who’ve gotten a 3.61 ERA in 152 total innings from Petit.
In holding the Diamondbacks to one run on four hits last night he threw 68 of his 84 pitches for strikes while striking out nine and walking zero.
The last pitcher to throw a nine-inning complete game using fewer than 84 pitches was Aaron Cook of the Red Sox, who needed just 81 pitches to shut out the Mariners in June of 2012. And the last pitcher to throw a nine-inning complete game that wasn’t a shutout using fewer than 84 pitches was Luke Hochevar of the Royals in 2009.
Also, via Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com–who has a good write-up of the game, with quotes from everyone involved–Petit has now struck out 41 batters since issuing his last non-intentional walk.

The state of next year’s free agent class will be impacted by whether or not players with vesting options in their contracts achieve the necessary playing time to trigger those conditional options. As we near the end of the season, here’s a rundown of these players and their progress toward triggering their options …
•Nick Punto, Athletics: Punto has a $2.75MM club option that will automatically vest if he spends fewer than 30 days on the disabled list, assistant GM David Forst told reporters at the time of the signing. Though Forst did add that there are other ways for Punto’s option to vest, the health route is no longer available. Punto was only activated yesterday — ten days into the September active roster expansion — after going on the DL on August 3rd. If the option doesn’t vest, the A’s have the choice of picking him up at $2.75MM or buying him out for $250K. •Rickie Weeks, Brewers: Weeks has an $11.5MM option that won’t be vesting, as he would have needed to total 600 PA in 2014 or 1,200 PA in 2013-14 and finish the season healthy. He has just 255 PAs on the season, so he’ll fall well shy of that mark. Weeks will also fall shy of reaching 400 PAs, which would have entitled him to a $1MM buyout of his option. •Jimmy Rollins, Phillies: Rollins’ option vested earlier this year when he reached 1,100 plate appearances over 2013-14. (He has also made 600 trips to bat in 2014, an independent basis for triggering the provision.) That clause, however, also required that he not finish the year on the disabled list, and Rollins left yesterday’s game with a hamstring injury. Word is that Rollins should be able to return, but with just three weeks left even a minor setback could well end his season. Nevertheless, Philadelphia would need to go out of its way to place him on the DL at this point, with active rosters expanded. And, in any event, the option would still vest if a mutually agreed-upon doctor deemed Rollins ready to start the 2015 season. •Dan Haren, Dodgers: Haren needs 180 innings to trigger a $10MM player option for the 2015 season. Heading into his scheduled outing this evening, he has already notched 162 frames. Haren should be in line for at least three more starts (including tonight’s) before the end of the month, and maybe another depending upon how the club approaches the last few games of the year. Having averaged 5.79 innings per start on the year, it will be incumbent on Haren to pitch his way to the option — especially in the midst of a playoff race and backed by a well-stocked bullpen. •Mike Adams, Phillies: Adams’ $6MM club option for 2015 would have vested with 60 innings pitched in 2014, but he’s obviously not going to get there with just 17 2/3 innings in the tank. Adams has thrown just 42 2/3 innings in his season-and-a-half with the Phils, and it seems highly unlikely that the team will pick him up at $6MM given his injury troubles. He should, however, be an attractive buy-low candidate given his general success when on the field. •Rafael Soriano, Nationals: Soriano’s $14MM club option vests with 120 games finished over 2013-14. While that always seemed a longshot, any realistic hope was snuffed out when Soriano lost his closing gig to Drew Storen, the man he replaced when he signed on with Washington. Whether or not Soriano makes it back into the 9th inning role over the next few weeks, he now sits at 104 games finished over the last two seasons, making it all but impossible for him to trigger the vesting provision. With the Nationals all but certain to decline their club option on Soriano, he should make for an interesting free agent to watch. •Kyuji Fujikawa, Cubs: The Cubs hoped that Fujikawa, one of the best relievers in Japanese history, would help to fortify their bullpen when they signed him to a two-year, $9.5MM contract in the 2012-13 offseason. Instead, both player and team received a hefty dose of bad luck when Fujikawa needed Tommy John surgery after just 12 innings last season. He has a vesting option based on games finished, but the 33-year-old has made it back for only 10 1/3 innings in 2014 and surely won’t be crossing that (unreported) threshold. •Sean Burnett, Angels: Burnett’s $4.5MM club option vests if he appears in a total of 110 games between 2013-14, but like Fujikawa, he’s been plagued by injury and has no chance of that happening. Burnett has appeared in just 16 games total over the past two seasons and underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this year. The Halos will certainly be paying the $500K buyout on his club option. •Scott Downs, White Sox: Downs had a $4MM vesting option that would have vested with 55 appearances, as MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes reported in June (via Twitter). Though he appeared to be headed in that direction earlier in the year, the White Sox cut bait with Downs and his then-6.08 ERA. He owns a 3.55 mark over 12 2/3 innings with the Royals — who signed him to a separate, minor-league deal — and has now thrown in 53 games, but the vesting clause is now a moot point.

Giants second baseman Joe Panik had an odd game last night against the Diamondbacks, going 5-for-5 while scoring zero runs and driving in zero runs.
He’s the first player with zero runs and zero RBI in a game with five or more hits since Adam Kennedy in August of 2009. And the only other times that happened within the past 10 years were Aaron Miles in 2008 and Curtis Granderson in 2005.
Panik has hit .327 in 56 games for the Giants as a 23-year-old rookie, but it’s come with just one homer and 14 walks in 214 plate appearances. Of course, empty batting average or not the Giants will happily take a a .369 on-base percentage and .766 OPS at second base after previously being so desperate at the position that they used Dan Uggla there for four games.

Panik has been a God send, even if he is just a singles hitter.
Petit has been crazy, it's either 1 run in 8 innings or 5 runs in 4 innings (as a starter anyway).
It's weird that the Giants are still "in it" considering that Lincecum and Cain are both out of the rotation. Lol, Never would have guessed that.

You think the lack of innings on Kershaw's arm this season will help propel the Dodgers to the World Series?

Related, I find myself constantly overestimating the amount of folks who just want to post on and about sports in any sort of serious way. I know why too. Most folks have friends that they maybe save their more serious sports discussions with. As such, they just come here to have a good time, the wilder nd more politically uncorrect the better. As I do not, I am looking for the serious stuff. And, as such, I am often left wanting. Oh well,.............. It sucks when you seeming "can't beat them", and based on personal preference, have no interest in "joining them".

I think the Giants have an outside chance at the division, but looks slim. I don't like the odds of a one-game playoff should they pin down a wildcard, but beggars can't be choosers. whos your pick for NL MVP and ROY?

Wow.
The Red Sox are looking ragged today. And, with me hoping that Brandon Workman would have a decent showing today. Have the Sox all but given up? I hope not. IMO, when you get paid what MLB players are, you should not be allowed to give up. But, that's just me, and being my usual unrealistic self.....
