CHICAGO (AP) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates at Chicago Cubs game has been suspended by rain with one out in the top of the seventh inning on Friday.
The teams were tied at 3 when a storm rolled through the area. With more rain in the forecast, the game was called after a delay of 1 hour, 52 minutes.
The Pirates and Cubs will resume their game on Saturday afternoon before their regularly scheduled matchup

Uh oh, brace yourself for the anger. This coming weekend, the Yankees will don Derek Jeter patches on both their jerseys and caps. Seen below is the cap, courtesy of New Era. Take note of the patch on the left side. This is newsworthy (sorry, it is!) because this is the first time in MLB history that a team will wear patches honoring an active player in multiple games. Why the caveat at the end there, with the "multiple" games, you ask? Because the Yankees did this once last year for Mariano Rivera. Yes sir, the Yankees love promoting the Yankees, don't they?

WEEI’s Rob Bradford reports that Red Sox manager John Farrell has temporarily removed Koji Uehara from the closer’s role and inserted Edward Mujica. Uehara has slumped, allowing runs in five of his last six appearances. That includes last night’s stint in which he allowed a game-tying solo home run to Mark Teixeira and a walk-off solo homer to Chase Headley in the ninth inning. Farrell stressed that Uehara is healthy and that the right-hander isn’t being shut down for the season, as has been speculated. Bradford adds that Uehara himself requested to be taken out of the closer’s role.Uehara had one of the best relief seasons of all time last year, finishing with a 1.09 ERA, 21 saves in 24 opportunities, and a 101/9 K/BB ratio. He also only gave up five home runs. This year, he has a 2.64 ERA with 26 saves in 30 chances and a 75/8 K/BB ratio. The two home runs Uehara allowed last night bumped up his total to 10, doubling last year’s allowance. Mujica, who closed for the Cardinals — the runner-up in last year’s World Series — has had mediocre results as a set-up man in the Red Sox bullpen, posting a 4.13 ERA with a 39/11 K/BB ratio in 52 1/3 innings. yeah...dont go running to grab Mujica off waivers in your fantasy league...the guy sucks

2013 was the Year of the Retiring Mariano Rivera. 2014 has been the Year of the Retiring Derek Jeter. Both players were honored as they made their final trips to various cities and received plenty of plaudits and going-away presents. Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, who is 38 years old and worn down, isn’t interested in putting a specific date on his retirement nor going on a retirement tour the way Rivera and Jeter have.
From ESPN Boston’s Joe McDonald:
“What Derek Jeter is doing is fine because he’s Derek Jeter. What Mariano did is fine because it’s Mariano. But I don’t know if I’m going to go through all that. I’m not going to wake up and be like, ‘I’m going to play this year and then not anymore.’ To me, it’s going to be how things go through the season and how I feel and then I’m going to be like, ‘Mama, it’s over.’ I’m going to let her know,” Ortiz said with a big smile and laugh. Though his numbers aren’t quite as good as those he compiled last season, when the Red Sox won it all, Ortiz has otherwise had another fantastic year. He has slugged 32 home runs, knocked in 98 runs, and put together a .263/.359/.515 slash line. With two more RBI, Ortiz will become one of only six players since 1901 to hit at least 30 home runs and knock in at least 100 runs at the age of 38 or older

As bad as things have gone for the Texas Rangers it's always nice when you can add a feel-good element to the game.
Guilder Rodriguez is that element for the Rangers.
Texas promoted Rodriguez, 31, Sunday. Rodriguez led all players with 1,095 games played in the minors without any major-league experience. That's not the case anymore though for Rodriguez, who had played 14 minor-league seasons including the last six for the Rangers.
"This is very exciting for me," said Rodriguez, an infielder who has bounced between Double-A and Triple-A each of the last five seasons. "When you sign in professional baseball every player when he signs the goal is to play in the big leagues. Not too many people have this opportunity and I've waited for 14 years for this opportunity."
Rodriguez began his professional career in 2001 with Milwaukee when he was 18. He didn't get his first Triple-A chance until he joined the Rangers.
While Sunday marks his first game in the majors, his impact has been felt in the clubhouse already. Young players like Rougned Odor and Luis Sardinas learned the ropes in the minors playing alongside Rodriguez.
That played a role in the decision for the Rangers to promote Rodriguez, who hit .269 for Frisco.
"He's just a true professional," Rangers interim manager Tim Bogar said. "He's basically a player-coach. He's a really good influence on the younger Latin players. Fourteen years of service doing everything the right way it's the right thing to do for a kid that's probably nearing the end of his career, especially with the season we've had to endure this year."
Bogar said the club does plan to get Rodriguez into the starting lineup in a game alongside Odor and Sardinas, but he won't say when because he wants it to be a surprise.
"I've been with like 80 percent of this whole team," said Rodriguez. "It's been fun with these guys and I'll try and help this team and have a good time here in the clubhouse."

Back in April, there was a story that a Houston-area furniture store was offering free furniture if the Astros did not lose 100 games this season.
Here was the promotion:
Get in the game with our Baseball Promo #1 - limited to the first 500 customers who purchase $6,300.00 or more from Gallery Furniture and have it delivered within one week. If the Houston Astros™ baseball team wins 63 or more games in the regular season, 100% of the furniture purchase price will be refunded to ALL 500 participating customers!
Sure enough, the Astros won their 63rd game of the season Sunday, so even if they lose out (which they won't), they'll end up with 99 losses. This means everyone who bought at least $6300 in furniture as part of this promotion gets a full refund.
And it would appear many people took Gallery Furniture up on the offer, too, because here's what the owner, Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale had to say, via CBS Houston:
“About $4.2MM,” McIngvale told SportsRadio 610 on the amount he is returning. “It's exciting. We're in the customer business. Nothing makes customers happier than winning a promotion like this. It's good to give back money to customers and they become customers for life.” It doesn't stop there with the promotions, because CBS Houston notes that McIngvale also "lost" two NFL promotions early this year, which cost him $8 million.
McIngvale later said he's done with the promotions for a while.
As for the Astros, it's the first time since 2010 that they'll avoid 100 losses.

Rangers let wash walk and want to resign the gm to a long term. Sounds like a scapegoat One thing you can be sure of. The Braves will do absolutely nothing. They will simply hang up their crap in their lockers until next year and say, "Augh, we just had a bad year." No one will get fired, harrassed or cussed out. Business as usual in Atlanta. AT least the Falcons did beat those good-fer-nothin' Aints. BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Major League Baseball has released the 2015 schedule. One thing that immediately jumps out is the late start. The traditional "opening day" that is a Monday happens on April 6 in 2015. This season, it was March 31. Going to the end of the season, that shows us that the last day of the regular season will be Oct. 4. Given that there aren't going to be changes to the playoff format, it seems pretty likely that at least the last several games of the World Series in 2015 will take place in November.
Also of note is the interleague schedule. In 2015, it'll be pretty simple. The regions all line up. That is, the NL East takes on the AL East, the AL Central vs. the NL Central and the NL West gets the AL West.

Trying to repeat what the Marlins did back in 98 (I think it was) will be very difficult to do.

The Braves need another Ted Turner. Current ownership only cares about making a little money, not winning any titles. The Falcons have Arthur Blank so they have a chance to go back to the NFC CG/Superbowl sometime in the future. The Hawks ownership sucks. See Braves above. Hopefully this idot racist will sell out to a guy who cares. But I doubt it.

The Athletics and White Sox open a four-game series at U.S. Cellular Field on Monday night, meaning Adam Dunn is returning to Chicago for the first since being traded away two weeks ago. Oakland acquired him to add some power for the stretch drive. Since Dunn is returning to Chicago, ex-teammates Chris Sale and John Danks decided to get him a little gift, a decked-out Texas-themed golf cart:

This is cool. Shohei Otani of the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters just became the first player to win 10 or more games as a pitcher and hit 10 or more home runs during the same season. No one has ever done that in Japan. The only U.S. major leaguer who ever did it was Babe Ruth, who won 13 games and had 11 homers back in 1918. Otani is only 20, by the way.
He also throws 100 miles per hour, which suggests that he’ll probably take the opposite career path from Ruth: moving to full-time pitching instead of full-time hitting. Because while this is fun and neat and all, the NPB is competitive enough, one assumes, that a generalist like that can’t continue to be a generalist and that Otani’s days off from pitching may be better spent developing a consistent routine as opposed to being his team’s DH. Also worth nothing that the Fighters aren’t a very good team this year. If and when they improve or Otani plays for a better club, there will likely be better hitting options than him.
Still: cool.

Curt Schilling will return to ESPN this Thursday on Baseball Tonight (10PM, ESPN2). SportsCenter interview w. him tonight at 6P ET. He was supposed to be with them all year before he got sick. Still, this will likely just be a one off, or, a part time gig for the next few weeks.

Are the Mets once again thinking about altering Citi Field's dimensions for the second time in three years? According to general manager Sandy Alderson, all possibilities to help improve the club in 2015 are being discussed.
Ignoring the fact that they probably just need better hitters, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson told a group of veterans at a Manhattan V.A. Hospital on Monday that there have been discussions within the organization about once again tweaking the dimensions at Citi Field, particularly the right-center-field gap.
Discussing a variety of topics, Alderson brought up the potential changes to the ballpark unprompted.
"It’s something that we had talked about the possibility in the past and we continue to look at it. We brought the fences in a couple years ago. It’s not about tailoring the ballpark to a particular player or a particular composition of team, it’s about making Citi Field as fan-friendly and as exciting as we can make it."
He also mentioned Curtis Granderson specifically, saying his right fielder would have seven additional home runs this year if the unspecified distance was currently in place.
As most Mets fans know, Citi Field has already undergone a change in dimensions. Following the 2011 season, the club brought in fences by as much as 12 feet while lowering the wall to a uniform height of eight feet across the entire outfield. Of course it doesn't appear that opponents have had as much trouble with the dimensions, outhomering the Mets 429-339 in Flushing since 2009.
Much has been made of the Mets' ability—or lack thereof—to hit for power at Citi Field since it opened in 2009. Our own Eric Simon penned a prescient piece all the way back in January 2009, three months before New York even played a game in their new home. Then again, maybe too much has been made of the club's inability to succeed at Citi Field. Either way, the fact that Alderson mentioned a specific number of home runs being added to Granderson's total is a strong sign that more changes could be in the works.

For anyone who thinks it is stupid or un-manly to bring a glove to a ballgame.
Every time a hot shot foul ball goes into the stands I wonder if someone got hurt. Then I think “well, we tend to hear about it when someone is hurt by one of those, so it can’t be too often.” Nope: dead wrong about that. Bloomberg did a study and found out way more fans are injured by batted balls than you probably imagine:
About 1,750 spectators get hurt each year by batted balls, mostly fouls, at major-league games, or at least twice every three games, a first-of-its-kind analysis by Bloomberg News has found. That’s more often than a batter is hit by a pitch, which happened 1,536 times last season, according to Elias Sports Bureau Inc. We tend to only hear about it when someone is seriously injured and often when it’s a kid. But every day someone is getting hurt. Be careful out there, people

This is all kinds of odd. Like the football Redskins, the Indians have been taking flack for their less than politically correct mascot, Chief Wahoo. However, unlike the Redskins, the Indians have been scaling back the merchandise that features him. That said, I came across this item today, and I could not help but notice the paradox therein. From the picture alone, can you see what I am talking about, and where I am coming from?
