Hope you are not one of many who's mom threw all their old cards away. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The PBS series "Antiques Roadshow" says it hit a home run with a collection of 1870s Boston baseball memorabilia. A trove of signatures and rare baseball cards from Boston Red Stockings players was appraised at $1 million for insurance purposes, series producer Marsha Bemko said. She said it's the largest sports memorabilia find in the history of the 19-year-old public TV show, which travels America looking for varied heirlooms and treasures. The collection was brought to an "Antiques Roadshow" taping Saturday in New York City. The owner inherited it from her great-great-grandmother, who ran a Boston boarding house where the team lived in 1871-72, PBS said. The owner's identity was kept private for security reasons, PBS said Monday. The collection had not been formally valued before but the owner had once received a $5,000 offer, PBS said. According to "Antiques Roadshow" appraiser Leila Dunbar, the "crown jewel" of the items is a May 1871 letter to the Boston landlady that includes notes from three future Hall of Fame members: Albert Spalding, the future sporting good magnate, and brothers Harry and George Wright. The letter included the players' appreciation for their host's cooking. The baseball franchise is now the Atlanta Braves. Appraisals from the New York City visit will be featured in three hours of "Antiques Roadshow" episodes to air in 2015 on public TV stations. The series is broadcast on Monday nights. damn that's pretty cool. Bet he's glad he didnt take the offer of 5 grand I didn't know all of that. Thanks for posting it. Didn't the Boston Red Stockings later become the Boston Braves, then moved to Milwaukee, then to Atlanta? I find pro sports history fascinating. Whoever in Boston would have thought that their team would eventually end up in the deep south and called the Braves? Very interesting.

So, on the Beltran thing.....
What a mess. A comedy of errors in fact. All capped off by Beltran, who was otherwise going to be out at the plate (in part due to not even trying to slide), by about 5 feet. Until, he gets nailed in the mellon. (which of course would not have happend if he slid).
All it was missing was the Benny Hill theme music.....

The Royals are in first place, this late in the season. Is there another Mayan "end of the world" date coming up that I was not aware of?

Pretty funny if you ask me.
One month from now, Derek Jeter will make his final career appearance in Baltimore. And just like at every other stop on his 2014 retirement tour, the future Hall of Fame shortstop will be feted in a pregame ceremony and given a gift by the opposing team.
With his team in New York to play the Yankees this week, Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter discussed the O’s plans for a Jeter gift and brought up the infamous 1996 incident when 12-year-old Jeffrey Maier plucked Jeter’s home run ball from the reach of Orioles outfielder Tony Tarasco in Game 1 of the ALCS.
“We were talking about what you get him as a gift. I would give him a big picture of the home run [Maier caught]. Well, it wasn’t a home run, we know that. That’s what I would give him a big picture of and have the whole Baltimore Orioles team sign it. It’s a good idea. It’s cheap, too, right? Make it in bronze. Not that we remember that.”
Showalter is joking, of course, and he hits a home run with the gag. (A real home run, not one assisted by a rule-breaking pre-teen and Rich Garcia.) But here’s the thing: Showalter’s joke is actually a really good suggestion!
So far this year, Jeter has received personalized cowboy boots, a personalized surfboard, a personalized subway mural, a personalized dirt plaque, a personalized bench made of bats and a personalized electric guitar, among other things. They’re all thoughtful gifts that reflect the city in which they were given. The personalization is key, as it’s pretty hard to shop for a guy who’s made approximately $265 million in his career.
But each of the farewell-tour gifts fail to capture the essence of Jeter. He was a beloved player in New York and a reviled player in other baseball cities, particularly in the AL East. Yet Jeter managed to play two decades and leaves the game as one of its most respected figures, even in those cities that couldn’t stand him. It’s a complicated legacy.
That’s why Showalter’s proposed gift is so perfect. Instead of acting like the Orioles always loved Jeter, they would give him a gift that celebrates how they didn’t. A signed Maier picture would be affectionate, playful and a sign of begrudging respect. What better way to honor a baseball great than that?

www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Phillies-Other-Businesses-Owe-Philly-Police-25M-Controller-270917321.htmlPhiladelphia's Controller says hundreds of businesses and agencies owe the city's police force $2.5 million for services they provided over the past several years. Near the top of the list is the Philadelphia Phillies, who the controller says owes Philly Police nearly $276,000 dating back to their World Series run. • Without a Buyer, AC's Newest Casino to Close Philadelphia Controller Alan Butkovitz said Tuesday that 389 entities haven't paid their tab. Of those, 168 bills are past due by 90 days or more. Among the top offenders, Butkovitz says, is the Phillies who haven't paid a bill stemming back to Oct. 27, 2008. That was the day of Game 5 of the World Series was played at Citizens Bank Park. The game, against the Tampa Bay Rays, was postponed because of weather and had to be finished two days later. • Drunken Dad Locked 3 Kids Out of House: Police Butkovitz says the team owes a total of $275,874. Ahead of the Phillies, who came in at number two on the list, was the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The state owes $341,328 dating from March 12, 2007, according to the controller's report. • Drive-by Shooter Targets Police Station The list also includes a $108,453 bill for the Mann Center from the Performing Arts, a $71,406 bill from the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and $21,308 owed by Chuck "E" Cheese, the children's party place. Construction companies, bars and other city agencies also owe money, the report found. Butkovitz said the city also hasn't done a good enough job at collecting the money. In a letter to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey and Revenue Commissioner Clarena Tolson, he urged them to collect the unpaid funds. "The city must take aggressive actions to pursue all outstanding revenues," he said in a release. "This is an opportunity for the city to generate more revenues that can pay for essential city services for all Philadelphians." NBC10 has reached out for comment from all the entities and is awaiting response. and I am this close to dumping Verlander in Fantasy But, how will you replace his numbers? Oh yeah, with an e.r.a of 4.76, a whip of 1.42, and a batting avg against of .273, I think better can be found in a deep waiver wire. A general cavaet to that though. Be very leery of any young pitcher who has put together a nice rookie season so far. I say that, as kids like this are likely going to be shut down before the season ends. Case in point, Jesse Hahn of the Padres. He has come out of almost nowhere this year. And, due to a large innings jump from last year to this, he WILL BE getting shut down by the Padres, maybe at the turn of the month.

Francis got all excited when the news of Verlander's MRI broke. Problem is, that Verlander has been mediocre to bad this year - Royals and the other teams want him pitching. Guy has pulled a Sabathia.

He would be a decent stop gap option if needed. With only about 40 more games to go for most teams, the time to wait out a guy, based on injury or poor performance, is dwindling. Just saying.

A thing on Segura, and I know I keep bringing it up, but, his kid died this year. As such, I am giving him a full pass on his suckage this year.

A few quick hits.
Tonights Yankees / O's game has been washed out due to rain.
Though playing in an N.L park, David Ortiz found his 1B mitt, and will be in the lineup tonight.
Neil Walker of the Pirates won't be, as he is still hurt. BUT, apparently not hurt enough to D/L, meaning the Bucs will play one man short until he either gets better, or, gets shut down for 2 weeks. I wish I had some info or a strong feeling on how this will sort out, but, I do not.

according to "rank" Wade Davis Danny Duffy Mike Leake Bud Norris My rank of that rank Duffy Leake Davis Norris If and when you decide to decide, this would be the way I would go, forgoing Davis, unless your league counts holds, or, unless you are in a max innings league, and are already near you limit. Even without holds, Davis can still help bring down your staff's overall e.r.a & WHIP numbers.
