In Boston, it’s never enough to lose and never enough to cut ties with a player who isn’t playing very well. Losing has to come with drama and departed players have to be kicked by anonymous sources as not just bad players, but bad people as they leave town. It’s just uncanny.
The latest is Rob Bradford’s piece, sourced by someone inside the Red Sox, that says A.J. Pierzynski was not just an ineffective hitter who wasn’t helping the team, he was a bad, selfish seed. He “had become such a negative influence on the team that players approached both the Sox coaches and front office to address the problem,” Bradford says. He goes on:
A microcosm of Pierzynski’s approach was mentioned by more than one of the backstop’s former teammates, who revealed his propensity to spend a significant amount of time looking at his phone while at his locker during games. In one instance, after a particularly rough outing in which the starting pitcher had been pulled early in the game, Pierzynski could be found staring at his phone while the pitcher gave off the appearance of being an emotional wreck just a few feet away. That incident paved the way to at least one complaint to management from a teammate. Such a shocker here. I mean, it’d be one thing if Pierzynski had a nearly two-decade track record of being a low OBP guy with some pop, some fairly “meh” catching abilities and a prickly personality, but … oh, wait.
I just don’t understand why this always happens with the Red Sox. Every other team in baseball manages to cut players when necessary and not have it be a big deal. In Boston, there are always knives out when people walk out the door. How the story of him being DFA’d isn’t “Pierzynski wasn’t cutting it, we aren’t winning, we have this young catcher named Vazquez who we think can really be the future of the club and we want to get him up now” is beyond me.

Some players on the Phillies are cagey about being willing to waive no-trade protection to go to another team. Jonathan Papelbon is a lot of things, but cagey is not one of them. Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com asked him if he’d waive his limited no-trade clause to go to a contender. Papelbon’s response: hells yeah!
Papelbon was incredulous that a player would not want to move from a losing team to a contending team.
“What?” he said.
“Some guys want to stay on a losing team?” he said.
“That’s mind-boggling to me,” he said.
So if a contender called, you’re ready to go?
“Yeah,” Papelbon said with an are-you-kidding-me laugh. “I think that’s a no-brainer.”

2 marquee pitching matchups today, The A's send out Scott Kazmir today vs. Tim Hudson of S.F, and, in a battle of lefties, Jose Quintana goes against Jon Lester, to see which Sox color is best today.

As am I. The guys from my hardcore fantasy league made up of Hoopla guys are asking about my situation, and may now decide to come here and join in after all. awesome I came across a pretty good group on facebook. The group is for baseball trivia/stats so they're kind of limited on what they can discuss but it's very active with a lot of good baseball knowledge...just gotta figure out the best way to mention this place to them without looking like I'm trying poach lmao...Any suggestions?

Yep Gordon is hurt, and likely will not play again until after the A.S break. Too bad, as he deserved a spot there. And, if you have been hanging on to C.J Wilson this year hoping for a turn around, stop. In fact, you are now about a month past his "sell by" date. While it is always hard to just flat dump an otherwise stud from your team, now that we are past the halfway point of the season, you know what player you have for this year, and, you make decisions accordingly. I know what I did with him....... Yeah I still have had him on 1 team. I should have asked about him when I asked about Cobb and Keuchel. I ended up starting CJ I knew he was struggling, didnt realize it was soooo bad though. Just dropped him for Jesse Hahn. Whadda ya think?

Let them know what this place is about, and offer for folks to come and check it out. I doubt there is another Hammer out there that would be so territorial about their site.

Yearly league fantasy can be a lot of times just about the hot hand, and, Hahn has it at the moment.

Guys like Wilson, with proven track records, should be given "a good amt of rope". I start thinking about these guys at the 1/4 point of the season, and, by the 1/3 point, I feel I have a good sample size to start moving guys along. With young kids or out of nowhere breakout guys, the rope is WAAAY shorter. Throw 2 bad games in a row? GONE! Slump for a week - 10 days at the dish? GONE! This has always worked for me anyway

Something you may have missed Filo - Angel Hernandez, widely considered to be one of Major League Baseball’s worst umpires, had home plate duties in last night’s Giants-Athletics game. And he was pretty much Angel Hernandez. Based on the tweets, comments and blog posts of folks who watched the game, Hernandez had his typically inconsistent and wide-to-the-right-side strike zone, causing pitchers and hitters from both teams to shake their heads in frustration. Then Hernandez went to his signature move, turning a merely poorly-umped game into a game with an umpire-player confrontation. Hernandez called an extremely questionable balk on Jean Machi in the eighth inning. Machi was upset and started yelling at Hernandez. Catcher Buster Posey attempted to get between them and calm the situation, only to have Hernandez yell, “Don’t push me” at Posey, as if Posey were actually trying to escalate, rather than defuse the situation. Bruce Bochy argued for a long time, using a lot of colorful language, but did not get tossed. Which, oftentimes, is the sign of an umpire who actually realized he messed up and is letting someone blow off steam. After the game, Giants announcer Duane Kuiper was unusually frank but 100% honest in his assessment of Hernandez, saying “Angel Hernandez is not a good umpire and, in my opinion, he does not belong in the big leagues. And I think Major League Baseball knows this, they just don’t know how to get rid of him.” He’s correct about that. Perhaps if more people closer to the game such as broadcasters and influential folks in the media were more willing to say this as frankly as Kuiper did, Major League Baseball would do something about it. How much dirt does he have on MLB? I mean that has to be the ONLY reason this clown still has a job!

BigD come up with a new stat that will substitute for a pitcher's W/L.
Instead of win - it should be left game with the lead and somehow factor in the [HASH] innings pitched and run support.

Alex Gordon “can’t swing” and will go for MRI exam on wrist Alex Gordon was scratched from the Royals’ lineup for last nights game against the Rays with a sprained right wrist and Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports that the left fielder will undergo an MRI exam when the team returns home tomorrow.

"Dammit Jim! I'm a doctor, not Bill James......" The best I can give you would be the beginning of an idea for a suitable replacement stat. I would require rethinking and re-tooling the current definition of the quality start. What I am thinking is that someone could do something to break it down further, down to what would be called a quality inning. Then, you would have a yes or no to the number of quality innings pitched. I am just not that smart a dude to really figure it out that far though.

Just thinking about Sale's start last night. he'll get a no decision so no W/L but it really should count as a win (made the bosox look foolish for most of the night). Maybe come up with some league or park average runs against and if the pitcher leaves the game holding that team to less than that they get a W+ (or whatever).

They have 1 its called a QS Quality Start Now the disagreement is what a QS should be most teams want a starter to go 6 and give up less than 4 runs cause the team has a chance to win anything over 6 is a bonus and most teams score 4 runs per game some dont like it cause its a 4.50 era if u change it to 7ip/2er there wont be many QSs

So when I see the Phillies play in August will they be completed out of it? They are last in their division, 10 games out now. And, there is ZERO out there about them being buyers, with a lot of talk of them being sellers. So, yes. The bright side, likely fewer Philly fans to fight with......
