So - I'm checking off a bucket list concert item tomorrow night... 43 years later than planned. In 1974, I had tickets to see Chicago and the Beach Boys at the Cotton Bowl right after my high school graduation. I was in band... so I didn't just like Chicago - I played Chicago. THey were among my favorite bands and still are. Long story short - the tickets were stolen from my home by a so-called friend... I didn't go... 5 years later Terry Kath lost a game of Russian Roulette and it wasn't Chicago anymore and then Peter Cetera turned them into "that" and I just didn't care. But after seeing the documentary on them on CNN a few months back and them going into the Hall of Fame... and them coming to the nearby Casino, I decided to grab a ticket. I took a look at the song list from a show a couple of weeks ago and with the exception of a few of those shit 80's songs it's pretty much the old stuff so I'm expecting a solid show.
The opening act is JD and the Straight Shot. Never heard of them. Looked them up and found this...
Jim Dolan. THAT Jim Dolan. Knicks owner.

Dolan's band was quality. With a real singer, I would go see them on their own. They don't have a real singer. They have him. And he didn't remind me of Tom Waits or Randy Newman. He reminded me of a carnival barker. I'd say he should keep his day job but we all know what that is. He sucks at that.
Chicago hit the stage at 9:00. They walked off at 11:30. I'll post the set list later. They were great. Absolutely great.

The entire YouTube of that show is great. THAT'S the Chicago I fell in love with when I was a band geek. And my favorite Chicago song of them all (at least the hits) is this one... which shows why Terry Kath was the heart and soul of that band.

1984... Albert King, the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble at Fair Park Coliseum in Dallas. Started at 8:00 PM. At 2:00 AM the people running the Fair Park Coliseum finally asked them to stop. No one left until Stevie said they had to quit. Only show I will ever put in the same category is the first time I saw Springsteen (1980 - The River tour).

Fuck i love my monster screen and sound system in my mancave. STARZ did a documentary of their recent South American tour. It was pretty cool and showed how revered they still are down there and how starved they (South American countries) are for Rock and Roll. The documentary was a leadup to the Stones playing Cuba for the first time which was captured and shown the following week. And just like you Harry, that show got cranked up on the Surround Sound and watched in its entirety. When the Stones are "on", they can still bring it. They brought it in that show. It was bad ass!

The one i watched had a great moment just pre concert where the kill proof Keith is setting up all his ciggies in a row in advance for easy access- classic

"Really don't mind if you sit this one out. My words but a whisper your deafness a SHOUT. I may make you feel but I can't make you think. Your sperm's in the gutter your love's in the sink. So you ride yourselves over the fields and you make all your animal deals and your wise men don't know how it feels to be thick as a brick."

Rancid opened. I was impressed. I've seen Rancid about 7 or 8 times. They're amazing. Seen DKM 20 times. Bouncing Souls 0 times. Rancid played 5 straight nights at Irving Plaza. Had 2 different opening bands each night. I went to 3 of the 5 shows and wanted to die after. I was BEAT UP after that...too much of a good thing!

16 days until i see Bouncing Souls, Rancid & Dropkick Murphys, i can't wait! My "Seeing Acts Who Were Relevant In The 70's & 80's" revue continues next week with Steve Miller and Peter Frampton. Seen Miller a number of times. Never seen Frampton who is one of my favorites. Hoping to see both of them on stage together at work. Two of the better guitarists of my generation.

A really underrated Canadian Rock Band from my "concert and cannabis" era was Streetheart . Their singer Kenny Shields just joined the dirt farm unfortunately . I be t i saw them as back ups at least twice and at least once as Headliners . In concert their version of the Stones Under My Thumb was epic.

What they lacked in on-stage charisma they more than made up for with one of the best sounding shows I've ever been to.

I feel like so many people just don't realize how good they were, there are a lot of songs that people know, but don't realize it's them
