Monday night May 30, Angel Stadium, Anaheim, CA
Angels 5, Tigers 1
Tigers record 24-26, .480, 4th place ALC, 4.5 GB Kansas City Royals
Good ball clubs support their ace pitcher when he is spinning a gem. Good ball clubs do not fail to muster any offense whatsoever against pitchers that are journeyman quality at best, game after game. Good ball clubs follow up hot streaks by cooling off to a week or two around .500 then pick it up again. Good ball clubs do not follow such streaks by totally going into the tank for a week or two. Good ball clubs do not simply change the faces of their bullpen pitchers after the previous ones sucked. Good ball clubs can run bases. Good ball clubs hit in the clutch.
The laments above all fit the 2016 Tigers to a T.
Jhoulys Chacin (2-3, 4.42) made them look like a bunch of bushers at the plate all night. The score was 0-0 in the top of the eight inning.
Justin Verlander (4-5. 4.11, stats that are badly inflated by the pen letting 85% of runners inherited from him to score) was tying to finish up his fifth straight excellent start. He had just navigated through the meat of the order, disposing of Trout and Pujols, so if he continued his clear sailing, a nine inning shutout was possible. But two of the previous four great starts were sullied by dreadful late inning efforts by the team. Tonight would be no exception.
Johnny Giovatella, who has hit but ten career home runs, led off the bottom of the 8th by hitting a ball into right field that J.D. Martinez allowed to drop in front of him to start the merry go round. Only the second hit allowed all night. But, wait! J.D. Martinez was playing to a depth in right that you would expect if Mike Trout or Albert Pujols were the batter. Yet, even playing as deep as he was and should not have been, that catch could have been made, i.m.o. But it was not.
Rafael Ortega followed with another single. Cliff Pennington then singled in Giovatella for the first run in the game. After Carlos Perez sacrifice bunted the runners to 2nd and 3rd, Gregory Petit hits a hot shot to the left of Andrew Romine at shortstop. Romine made a real good play catching it on one hop, but his throw home was late to try to nab Ortega at home.
But James McCann tried to save face on the play by throwing to first in an ill fated attempt to get Petit. The throw might have nabbed him except McCann had no lane to throw and the ball bounced into foul territory in right field off Petit, scoring Pennington and putting the Angels up by a commandimng score of 3-0. Bad time for McCann's first career error, a record 139 games to start his major league career.
Exit Verlander, who seemed snake bit the entire inning and enter Buck Farmer. Tiger bullpen up to its usual "stupid pet tricks" again. After a fly out to left by Kole Calhoun and intentional walk to Trout, Albert Pujols and C.J. Cron each singled. 5-0 Angels.
A meaningless double by J.D. Martinez and sac fly by Victor Martinez was all the putrid Detroit attack could throw at Chacin, who finished with a complete game win.

Tuesday, May 31, Angel Stadium, Anaheim, CA
Angels 11 Tigers 9
Tigers record 24-27, .471, 4th place 5.5 GB Kansas City Royals
Losing pitcher Mark Lowe (1-3, 7.79) quickly sucked all the momentum out of a furious Tigers comeback in the bottom of the ninth. After climbing out a cavernous 9-2 hole, it took just 8 poorly executed pitches by Lowe to allow a single to Shane Robinson, then a 2 run homer by C.J. Cron (5) on the very next offering to hand the Angels an 11-9 victory.
The Tigers were down 9-2 after five innings because Anibal Sanchez (3-6, 6.67) was ineffective as a starter yet again. A sixth inning home run by J.D. Martinez (11) in the 6th made it 9-4, and Ian Kinsler battled Cam Bedrosian to an eight pitch 3-2 count before smacking a grand slam home run (11) bringing it to 9-8 after 7 innings. Victor Martinez tied it at 9 with a solo home run (8) off Fernando Salas with one out in the eighth. Huston Street (2-0, 1.04) claimed the victory by stopping the Tigers in the top of the ninth before Lowe's meltdown won it for the Angels.

Tigers 3 Angels 0
Tigers record 25-27, .481, 4 GB Kansas City Royals
Michael Fulmer (5-1, 3.24) twirled yet another gem in a bid to win A.L. Rookie of the Year honors, going 7 2/3 innings shutout, two hit innings while striking out 8. Francisco Rodriguez (0-0, 3.60), finished for his 15th save in 16 chances.
The Tigers tallied single runs in the 5th, 6th and 9th to best the Angels.

Thursday June 2, Comerica Park, Detroit, MI makeup of rained out game from April 10
Yankees 5, Tigers 4
Tigers record 25-28, .472, 4th place ALC, 4 GB Kansas City Royals
The "Sixth Inning Wall" closed in on the Tigers yet again tying the game at 1, then the seventh came, and the result was the same...another loss. Matt Boyd (0-1, 3.94) was rolling along into the sixth for the Tigers throwing a shutout and leading 1-0 when New York tied it on a sacrifice fly by Jacoby Ellsbury.
They knocked Boyd out in the seventh and handed him his first decision of the year. Rob Refsnyder singled in the first run in the seventh, then Aaron Hicks, batting against Kyle Ryan (relieving Boyd), deflected a ball into left field off shortstop Jose Iglesias for the second run of the inning. Bobby Parnell, in his first game since being called up by the Tigers, gave up a two run triple to Ellsbury, plating Refsnyder and Hicks and making it 5-1.
The Tigers pecked away in the bottom of the seventh, eight and ninth for single runs to get close, but strangled any hopes of winning the day by leaving an astounding 18 runners on base!
Dellin Betances (2-2, 2.81) was the right man in the right place and got the win for the visitors.

Friday night, June 3, Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Tigers 10, White Sox 3
Tigers record 26-28, .481, 3.5 GB Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Indians
Jordan Zimmermann (8-2, 2.58) returned from a groin injury that caused him to miss his last start, and was greeted and supported well by his teammates.
They broke up a close game by scoring in five of eight innings. That included a 4 run eighth inning that increased the lead from 6-3 to 10-3.
Carlos Rodon (2-5, 4.41) took the loss for Chicago.

Saturday afternoon, Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Tigers 7 White Sox 4
Tigers record 27-28, .491, 3.5 GB Cleveland Indians
This was probably the Tigers' best game of the season. All season they struggled vs lefties before breaking through last night vs. Carlos Rodon.
Today, not just any lefthander, but 9 game winner Chris Sale was on the mound for the White Sox. In what looked like the mismatch of the season so far with winless righty Mike Pelfrey going for the hometowners. Never mind. That's why they play the games! Pelfrey was crisper than usual and the Tigers trailed against Sale, the early front runner for the A.L. Cy Young Award - but only 2-1.
Longtime Sale nemesis Victor Martinez (who had an infamous dust-up with Sale late in 2014 when the Sox pitcher looked at Victor with his hands cupped around his eyes effectively accusing Victor of receiving stolen signs flashed his way via the center field stands) was on base when J.D. Martinez came up and hit a long home run (12) to dead center field and the Tigers had a lead that they would not relinquish after six innings, 3-2.
Cameron Maybin knocked Sale (9-2, 2.54) out of the game in the next inning, making it 4-2 singling in Jose Iglesias with one out.
A bevy of infield hits and misplays in the bottom of the eight by the White Sox made it 7-2 Tigers. They even could withstand another inevitable Mark Lowe appearance (he gave up 2 ninth inning runs) to hang on for the win and give Pelfrey (1-5, 4.76) the win and make way for Francisco Rodriguez' 16th save in 17 tries (0-0, 3.54).

Sunday afternoon, June 5 at Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Tigers 5, White Sox 2
Tigers record 28-28, .500, 3.5 GB Cleveland Indians
Second game we actually attended in person and wouldn't you know it, thunderstorms everywhere. The clouds finally parted and Justin Verlander helped complete a sweep of the White Sox in their maiden series of the year. Well, it proved that the White Sox weren't nearly as good as they appeared when they had an 8.5 game lead in early May, and that the Tigers were not nearly that bad as they moved to within a game of their divisional rival.
This was the sixth straight excellent start for Verlander (5-5, 3.97), who was nicked for solo home runs by Jose Abreu (7) in the first...a line drive to dead left center, and a solo homer by Todd Frazier (18) in the sixth. He went seven strong innings, fanning 8 for the win.
By the time Frazier hit that home run in the sixth, the Tigers and Verlander already enjoyed a 5-1 lead, thanks to Miguel Cabrera's RBI double in the third that tied the affair at 1, then dropped 4 runs on Chicago in the fifth when a run was walked in by J.D. Martinez after the Sox had intentionally walked Cabrera to load the bases two batters prior - with two out. Nick Castellanos singled in the run that made it 3-1, then the scoring concluded for the day with the ice cold Justin Uption doubling in two on a 3-0 count.
The save by Francisco Rodriguez (0-0, 3.38) made it 17 saves in 18 tries for him on the season.

Monday night June 6, Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Tigers 11 Blue Jays 0
Tigers record 29-28, .509, tied 3rd place ALC with Chi White Sox, 3.5 GB Cleveland Indians
Move over Nomar Mazara. Michael Fulmer (6-1, 2.83) is a breakout candidate for AL Rookie of the Year. Thanks to tremendous batting support, he was able to take a break and sit out the final three innings with his team up 8-0. But again, while he was in the game, the results were outstanding. Mixing in a devilish change up with his slider and 93-98 MPH fastball, he held the powerful Blue Jays scoreless with two hits, striking out 5.
James McCann got the Tigers off on the right foot off loser J.A. Happ (6-3, 3.57) with a three run shot (3) in the second inning. Justin Upton smacked a two run shot (4) in the fourth making it 6-0. Upton is finally showing signs of emerging from his season long slump.
The 15 hit attack featured six Tigers with two hits (Ian Kinsler, Cameron Maybin, J.D. Martinez, Nick Castellanos, James McCann and Justin Upton).

Tuesday night June 7, Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Tigers 3, Blue Jays 2 (10 innings)
Tigers record 30-28, .517, tie 2nd place with KC Royals, 2.5 GB Cleveland Indians
The Tigers pulled off their most dramatic comeback of the season starting in the bottom of the 9th, stealing what looked like a certain victory from 23 year old Jays righthander Aaron Sanchez (5-1, 2.91), who had held them to one hit and no runs through eight innings and striking out 12.
Matt Boyd (0-1, 3.38), another young righthander, pitched decent for the Tigers and got no decision. He allowed five of the nine walks surrendered to Blue Jays hitters. They will be kicking themselves for leaving 11 men on base and going 0-9 with runners in scoring position.
Trailing 2-0, Jose Iglesias led off the 9th for Detroit with only the second hit off Sanchez. When Ian Kinsler followed with a sharp run scoring double, the lead was cut to 2-1 and Sanchez gave way to closer Roberto Osuna. Andrew Romine bunted Kinsler to third and set up a confrontation between Osuna and Miguel Cabrera. Osuna sent Miggy sprawling to the dirt on a high, hard one. Two pitches later, Cabrera doubled deep to right center - plating Kinsler and tying it up. The inning ended two batters later.
The Tigers won it off Joe Biagini (3-2, 1.64) after loading the bases when Ian Kinsler bounded one over the head of drawn in third baseman Josh Donaldson for the walk off. Justin Wilson (2-1, 3.42) was the winner for the Tigers.

Wednesday June 8 Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Blue Jays 7 Tigers 2
Tigers record 30-29, .508, tied 2nd place ALC with KC Royals, 2.5 GB Cleveland Indians
The Tigers were simply not able to stop the potent Toronto offense three straight times. After the two teams swapped two run home runs in the first (Smoak (6) for the Blue Jays and Castellanos (11) for Detroit), it was all Blue Jays.
Jordan Zimmermann (8-2, 3.30) was not sharp, but the Jays were in form, particularly reigning AL MVP Josh Donaldson. His 3 run shot off Zimmermann in the top of the third was the game winner among his four hits, and his 14th round tripper of the season. The Blue Jays knocked the Tiger starter out with Kevin Pillar's two run triple in the fifth, accounting for the final tally.
R.A. Dickey (4-6, 4.15) lasted 5 1/3 to get the win for the Jays.

Friday, June 10 Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY
Yankees 4, Tigers 0
Tigers record 30-30, .500, tied 3rd place w/ Chicago White Sox 4.5 GB Cleveland Indians
Mike Pelfrey (1-6, 4.68) is one of the top pitchers in MLB at getting out of jams. The problem is that he gets into so many jams. He issued five walks in his 6 2/3 innings and the Yankees sprinkled in enough hits behind questionable defense to touch him for four runs. The biggest miscue came courtesy of leftfielder Justin Upton, who broke in on a fly ball hit by Didi Gregorius, which promptly went over his head and turned into the two run double that put New York up 3-0.
The Tigers could do nothing with rejuvenated lefthander CC Sabathia (4-4, 2.28). He pitched seven shutout innings, allowing only five hits while striking out four.

Saturday, June 11 Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY
Tigers 6 Yankees 1
Tigers record 31-30, .508, tie 2nd place with Kansas City Royals, 3 GB Cleveland Indians
Ian Kinsler's three run blast (12) off Masahiro Tanaka (3-2, 3.08) in the top of the fifth inning gave the Tigers all the batting support that Justin Verlander (6-5, 3.77) would need in his 6 2/3 innings to give the Tigers the victory.
For good measure, Kinsler doubled in two more in the seventh, giving him a career high 5 RBI.
Alex Wilson loaded the bases in the New York ninth, so Francisco Rodriguez (0-0, 3.32) came in and got his 18th save in 19 chances, inducing Chase Headley to ground out and end the game.

Sunday June 12 at Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY
Tigers 4 Yankees 1
Tigers record 32-30, .516, tie 2nd place Kansas City Royals 3 GB Cleveland Indians
First series win for Tigers in New York since the new Yankee Stadium opened (2009).
Tigers rookie SP Michael Fulmer (7-1, 2.52) becomes only the second pitcher in 100 seasons (Jake Arrieta 2015-16) to win four straight decisions with 6 innings or more pitched while giving up 3 hits or fewer and 0 runs.
Ian Kinsler's 2 run homer (13) in the seventh inning widened the gap to 4-0 Detroit. Francisco Rodriguez (0-0, 3.18) earned his 19th save in 20 opportunities.

Monday June 13 at U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, IL
White Sox 10 Tigers 9, 12 innings
Tigers record 32-31, .506, 3rd place, 3 GB Cleveland Indians
7-0 Tigers middle of the third...Tigers 7 White Sox 6 after 5 innings...Tigers 8 White Sox 6 middle of sixth inning...Tigers 9 White Sox 7 going to bottom of the 9th...game tied after nine innings.
White Sox 10, Tigers 9 Final in 12 innings.
Starter Matt Boyd (0-1, 4.91) could not make it 5 innings to qualify for a win. Booby Parnell could not stop an inherited runner from scoring the fifth run for Chicago, then gave up a run scoring single by Brett Lawrie to get it within 7-6 for the Sox. Jose Iglesias dropped a suicide squeeze RBI in the top of the ninth, giving the lead of 9-7 to the Tigers and Francisco Rodriguez could not nail it down, blowing his first save sine opening day.
Get the theme? Detroit shelled starter James Shields for 7 runs but the White Sox walked off winners when Adam Eaton singled through a drawn-in infield, scoring J.B. Shuck with the winner in the bottom of the 12th off Anibal Sanchez (3-7, 6.21).
It wasn't as bad as Brian Dozier's walk off 3 run home run last July 10 that capped the Twins 8-6 comeback win after they had trailed 6-0, but it wasn't arguably almost as bad. That incident wrecked the Tigers' season last year. Tigers fans hope it is not "deja vu all over again"...
The Tigers received 11 walks in the game. Not one of these runners scored!

Tuesday June 14 at U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, IL
Tigers 11 White Sox 8
Tigers record 33-31, .516, 3rd place, 2 GB Cleveland Indians
Sorry, I don't have much good to say, even with this win. Last night the Tigers lost a 7 run lead to lose a game. Tonight they nearly choked up a 10-2 lead!
They again hammered away at a White Sox starter, this time handing the eventual loss to Miguel Gonzalez (1-2, 4.74) after shelling him for 7 earned runs in 3 1/3 innings, then hung on for dear life. Jordan Zimmermann (9-3, 3.46) does get some credit for toughing it out and earning the win on a night where an overwhelmed and poor performing bullpen was spent following the debacle that was Monday night. He was touched for six runs (four earned) in seven innings though. And Mark Lowe (1-3, 8.55) again was awful in the ninth, giving up the final two runs to the White Sox.
Sad to see an offense hitting on all cylinders with the pitching hardly able to contribute anything...

Wednesday June 15 at U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, IL
White Sox 5, Tigers 3
Tigers record 33-32, .505 3rd place 2 GB Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Indians
The Tigers recreated the June 6 matchup of Chris Sale and Mike Pelfrey, but this time the results were not as favorable.
Sale (11-2, 2.94) bent badly in the third, giving up all three Tigers runs including an improbable two run, opposite field shot to Tigers' shortstop Jose Igliesias (2). But he did not get near to breaking, as that three spot was everything that they could muster on this steamy 91 degree evening on the South Side.
Mike Pelfrey was decent (1-7, 4.79), but not good enough, giving up four earned runs and seven hits in six, including pitching to Tim Anderson, who scored the winner shortly after singling. The Tigers pen was not atrocious tonight...simply bad as Blaine Hardy and Anibal Sanchez were unable to keep Anderson from scoring, and Buck Farmer gave up a run in his only inning (the ninth).

Monday morning June 20 completed four game series at Kauffmann Stadium, Kansas City, MO
Thursday night: Tigers 10, Royals 4 Friday night: Royals 10, Tigers 3 Saturday night: Royals 16, Tigers 5 Sunday afternoon: Royals 2, Tigers 1 (13 inns)
Tigers record 34-35 .493, 3rd place, 4.5 GB Cleveland Indians
The good: Detroit clubbed 6 home runs, including 3 from Victor Martinez in the 10-4 victory Thursday. Justin Verlander (7-5, 3.87) was not as sharp as he had been recently, but earned a win.
The bad: What else is new? The Detroit bullpen completely collapsed in games 2 and 3 of this series. They gave up 9 runs after rookie sensation Michael Fulmer (7-2, 2.45) had his scoreless inning streak end in the sixth inning at 33 1/3, second best in MLB history for rookie and only 1 1/3 inning short of Fernando Valenzuela's record established in 1981.
The following evening the pen imploded in a nationally televised game, giving up 9 runs again, after ineffective starter Matt Boyd (0-2, 6.44) allowed 7 in 3 2/3 innings. Mark Lowe (1-3, 10.71) the ballyhooed set up man signed in the off season continued his plunge, giving up 5 runs in the eighth while retiring but one batter.
Finally, the pen rebounded Sunday, but the Tigers literally couldn't "hit their way out of a paper bag" all day in a 13 inning loss Sunday. Jordan Zimmermann (9-3, 3.24) did everything short of driving the team bus in his quest for the tenth win of his season. He held the Royals to 4 hits and a single run in 8 complete innings. But other than Steven Moya's first major league home run in the third inning, the Tigers did nothing. Bruce Rondon provided the only other encouraging thing besides these two, pitching scoreless innings in the 11th and 12th innings, throwing 100 MPH heaters and wicked sliders. Alas, the Royals scored the winner in the 13th off Kyle Ryan (1-2, 3.48) to conclude four days that started with optimism and ultimately crashed to the ground.

Friday morning June 24 completed four game series at Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Monday night: Tigers 8, Mariners 7 (12 innings) Tuesday night: Tigers 4, Mariners 2 Wednesday night: Tigers 5, Mariners 1 Thursday afternoon: Tigers 5, Mariners 4 (10 innings)
Tigers record 38-35, .521, 3rd place 4 GB Cleveland Indians
Justin Upton hit two home runs in the Monday night game, including the walk off in the 12th inning. He had blasted a two run shot in the seventh to give the Tigers a 7-6 lead but Justin Wilson gave it up in the eighth. The win was a needed boost for the team, coming off that 13 inning loss to the Royals just the day before.
Brad Ausmus was spared a load of second guessing in Tuesday's win. He had a hobbling Victor Martinez on at first base in the bottom of the eighth and one out with Nick Castellanos at the plate. Nick drilled a double into the right center and V Mart was not able to score the lead run. So Ausmus pinch ran for him after the fact. It didn't matter because after an intentional walk to Upton, Adam Lind got handcuffed on a little squibber at first base and the late replacement pinch runner Andrew Romine scored the winning run.
Wednesday night Miguel Cabrera hit his 16th home run out of Comerica Park on one bounce. The ball traveled 461 feet on the fly. In the second, Jose Iglesias' double scored Steven Moya and Jarrod Saltalamacchia off Hishashi Iwakuma. That was all the Tigers needed in the 5-1 win.
In the closing game, Detroit completed their first four game sweep since 2013. They won a nip and tuck game in the tenth inning on a wild pitch by Mariners' reliever submariner Steve Cishek with the bases loaded, 5-4.

The Tigers open a three game series tonight at Comerica Park against the first place Indians.
This is as close to a huge series as one can get for June.
Detroit has tried valiantly to stay in the race through an ice cold streak in early May where they dropped 9 of 11 to their current spot three games above .500 and coming off their first four game series sweep since 2013.
They only trail the Tribe by four games, but it is noteworthy that they have lost all six games (three at home and three in Cleveland). The Indians are also red hot, winners of six straight games.
Another sweep at the hands of the Indians marks a disaster that they may not overcome because they will not only be seven games back, but the mental toll of losing all nine games could be insurmountable.
Losing two out of three would not be much better but would still leave the team with little momentum or confidence.
They really need to take two out of three. A sweep would be totally regenerative, but it is not paramount.
Just play some good baseball, boys.

I am sorry to announce that following the three game sweep at the hands of the Indians, that this thread has been pre-empted.
And its not just heat of the moment anger. It has been four days and the team has won twice since.
I know the Indians are good. they have a running 12 game winning streak.
