I fly this proudly in my yard. 2015 was a big letdown here...first place to last. The team has made a number of upgrades since. I still think that the bullpen is not good enough, the starting pitching is questionable, and that they will have a lot of trouble if some of the older, brittle bodies break down again (V Mart, Miggy, JV and Sanchez in particular). But hope springs eternal. They open tonight in a very untraditional place at a very untraditional time in Miami Florida. Justin Verlander vs Wei Yin Chen. Go Tigers!

Detroit is the place where old closers go to die. Maybe it would help if they stopped shopping in the "geriatric" aisle though. Christ, they just got Joe Nathan a year too late and now Franky Rodriguez. Learned nothing. That game with its tired ninth inning meltdown felt more like a loss than any actual win that I can remember...

Victor Martinez on bench because there is no DH in NL parks.
Steps up and hits a HR batting lefthanded pinch hitting in game one, then steps up and hits a HR batting RH yesterday.
First time a batter has opened with 2 straight PH home runs since 1914. Doubt anyone ever did it from both sides of the dish.
Dude is old and brittle, but as long as he has his legs under him...boy can he still rake!

How about Jerrod Saltamacchia vs. his former team yesterday?
First he throws out Dee Gordon attempting to stael second.
Then he smashes a 2 run shot against Jose Fernandez, who was on his way to a 13 strikeout performance in under 6 innings. Struck out Justin Upton 3 times and only the removal of Jose saved a "Golden Sombrero" for J-Up.
Then he knocks in two more with a double. I got a feeling his left handed bat may be a big benefit to a club that sends exclusively right handed batters to the plate every day (except Victor, when he faces right handers and who knows if V mart will hold up for the entire season).
The kicker?
The Marlins are paying him, he signed a 3 year deal for $21M in 2014 and they are still on the hook.

Wish he would have been sick though, as he personally ruined what was otherwise a real gem for Fernandez.

Buddy of mine knows his agent, who says that he's legitimately a great guy. Probably never reached his full physical potential, because he's a bit of a scatterbrain. Glad to see him doing ok though.

Opening day in Detroit. Tigers 4 Yankees 0.
What a fun day. The Tigers banged out 13 hits off the Yankees Luis Severino and two young relievers in the obligatory 38 degree chill that is present traditionally around these parts.
Ian Kinsler, off to a blazing start, got things going leading off the bottom of the first, with a resounding smack to the right field corner for a double. Soon, Miguel Cabrera singled him in. 1-0 Tigers.
New righthander Jordan Zimmermann did not have real good command of his fastball. No problem. The curve and sinker were darting and diving and the big Wisconsin farm boy got the win in his Tigers' debut, allowing but two hits in 7 complete innings and 100 total pitches.
The Tigers handled Severino, the Yankees talented young righthander, quite efficiently. They tallied 9 singles among ten hits as they hit the ball where it was pitched with great efficiency. Nick Castellanos had 4 of the singles and made an excellent over the shoulder, diving grab of a foul pop behind third base, retiring Jacoby Ellsbury.
Finally, icing the cake, with the game 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Miguel Cabrera showed why he remains likely the top hitter in the game today. Watch him "go with" this pitch from Luis Cessa and all but "flicks' it out of the park, almost effortlessly.
The Tigers move to 3-0 on the young season. Yes, they were 6-0 last year and 11-2 last year, but somehow this feels more realistic this time around...although it is early.

I love this new post zone Zig! HEY new memnbers! Like the Tigers? Just like MLB? Come and post here! You should be very optimistic. The Tigers are better than many give them credit for. Heard a guy on MLB radio say they are the best team in that division. Might be. All comes down to SP and BP is better and when August comes around there are some closers to be had. KC and the rest of that division cannot match Detroit for offense and KC has had it going their way two years now, that stuff evens out. They walk a thin line.

Every 500th bowl of Cap'n Crunch CC goes six innings without giving fans in the upper deck souvenirs all afternoon, guess he hit 500 Saturday morning in DeeeeTroit.

Yanks coax another decent season out of the veterans and they are a year closer to bringing up a number of really good prospects. Look at Houston. An afterthought 15 months ago, now is very capable of making it to the series. The only problem here is that the Tigers' system is as barren as the desert. They need to make hay this year or next or it is a near total rebuild...

Well, we got a snow/cold/rain out here tonight.
The Yankees ended the Tigers' brief three game winning streak Saturday 8-4, on the coldest day of a game start in the 17 year history of Comerica Park.
Takes?
Well, the Yankees are a better club than many will give them credit for. Alex Rodriguez brings the usual baggage but he is still the best guess hitter of all time. Takes Mike Pelfrey deep to open the scoring 1-0. Never liked him. But I give him a lot of credit for humbling up a lot and keeping a low profile. And I don't know how he was able to deal with the circus surrounding him last year and still hit 33 bombs.
He is saying that he's done after 2017, and at 688 career HR and counting, this means that he will fall short of both Barry Bonds and Henry Aaron in the chase for the career record. I think he has truly changed his ways and wants no part of that controversy in trying to chase the record beyond 2017.
CC Sabathia followed up a game where Luis Severino truly pitched much better than the outcome Friday's game left him with. CC was efficient and pitched intelligently. He had really good control.
As for the Tigers, I still strongly question the signing of Pelfrey. Yes, it was really cold and he is a "touch and feel" kind of ground ball inducing pitcher, but he was simply awful. When he still had a chance to keep his team in the ballgame at 3-0, he allowed a bases clearing triple to Jacoby Ellsbury, all but closing the book at 6-0. Buck Farmer still looks like a career "farmer' (as in "busher") in relief. Gave up a two run jack after Detroit got two back...a major no-no.
The Tigers send Verlander to the mound in a Monday afternoon tilt at Comerica tomorrow against the Pirates.

They just hope he eats up innings and approaches .500 in his starts as a team. not many teams can go four or five deep in quality starters . Verlander is the key. is he the guy who finished last year pitching lights out? if he is, then the tigers SP is good.

Pirates 7 Tigers 4 Tigers record 3-2.
John Jaso led off the game for the Pirates with a double. After Justin Verlander (0-1) retired Andrew McCutchen, former Tiger Matt Joyce singled him in. The Pirates never looked back.
Can't put too much stock in one game but the Pirates built on a troubling trend that has been Verlander's performance for a couple of years straight now. Where he used to blow the ball by hitters in his halcyon days...they simply foul off pitch after pitch after pitch these days.
He needed 117 pitches to make it through 4 and a third innings. That left him with 13 batters retired and 14 outs short of the number it takes to pitch a complete game. Pittsburgh tallied ten hits and two walks in that time, good for seven earned runs. He went to 0-2 on numerous hitters, only to have many of them reach base. They scored in each of the five innings that Verlander pitched. Relievers Drew VerHagen, Logan Kensing, Mark Lowe and Kyle Ryan finished up, allowing seven more hits between them but no more runs.
Nick Castellanos and J.D. Martinez hit solo home runs for two Tigers runs, Nick singled in another.
Tigers' catcher James McCann got caught up in a tangle with first baseman Jaso, and sprained his right ankle and will miss 2-4 weeks. Bobby Wilson will be called up from AAA Toledo to be the understudy to Jarrod Saltalamacchia until McCann recovers.

Tigers 8 Pirates 2 Tigers' record 4-2
Turnabout is fair play, say the Detroit Tigers. After being hammered Monday with the Pirates 17-hit attack, the Tigers pounded out 14 hits including a 451 foot into the camera well solo home run by Justin Upton in the first. Two hitters later, J.D. Martinez singled in Miguel Cabrera making it 2-0.
Detroit made it 4-0 going into the sixth inning, pounding Juan Nicasio. Anibal Sanchez was cruising along, mixing in some devilish change-ups to start the inning, striking out former tiger Matt Joyce, then all-world center fielder Andrew Mc Cutcheon with a 67 MPH puzzler. Two out. End of domination. Single by David Freese then a two-run shot by another star outfielder Starling Marte made it 4-2. After Sanchez walked Francisco Cervelli, his day was suddenly done.Fortunately for Detroit, the newly refurbished bullpen proved up to the task again.
Justin Wilson, Drew VerHagen, Buck Farmer and Francisco Rodriguez slammed the door shut and allowed no more runs for the remainder of the game. And former Tiger Kyle Lobstein was as hittable as he always has been, but this time wearing a Pirates uniform. Victor Martinez doubled in Ian Kinsler and Justin Upton off him in the bottom of the frame, then the "other" Martinez (J.D.) knocked Victor with his third of four hits in the game in making it 7-2; and the boys never looked back.

Tigers 7 Pirates 3 Tigers' record 5-2
Jerrod Saltalamacchia. Again! I liked it when they picked him up and I like it more every day. What's not to like? He bats left handed on a team that starts exclusively right handed hitters except for when Victor Martinez is facing a right handed pitcher. He has a great arm for throwing out baserunners. And, he hits with power.
He is not only an outstanding backup for James McCann, who turned an ankle and will be out up to four weeks. He is more than capable of stepping right in and contributing every day.
The Tigers had just edged to within 2-1 in the fourth off Ryan Vogelsong, thanks to a solo home run by Ian Kinsler, but disappointed when they left runners at 2nd and 3rd when the batting order was "not in the right order". Nick Castellanos grounded to 3rd for the second out and the run could not score. Then with two out now, "Salty" hit what would have been a game tying sacrifice fly if only he batted in front of Nick...
Shane Greene was mowing down Pirates after a 35 pitch rocky first inning where he allowed two runs heading to the top of the sixth, so it was still 2-1 entering that frame.
Arquimedes Caminero (I didn't make the name up) came in to pitch the sixth for Pittsburgh. A career farmhand with 100MPH velocity that inexplicably never made it in the bigs after trying for 9 years, came out firing. He quickly dispatched Kinsler and Justin Upton, and went 0-2 on Miguel Cabrera. Then he left a change where Miggy could hit it, and Mig belted it to center for a double. A walk to J.D. Martinez and a single on the first pitch by Castellanos that was too hard hit to left to enable Miguel to score with Starling Marte's gun looming in left field loaded them up.
This time the batting order was a charm as "Salty" belted the first offering from Caminero into the right field seats for his 100th career HR and a grand salami at that! 5-2 Tigers.
Detroit added two in the top of the ninth and Francisco Rodriguez finished it up in the non-save situation.

Tigers 7 Pirates 4 Tigers' record 6-2
The best hitting team in this young season rolls on.
Although the Pirates banged out 14 hits, they stranded 12 runners. Tigers' started Jordan Zimmermann (2-0) led a particularly charmed life under sunny skies at PNC, giving up 0 runs despite loading the bases twice, allowing 6 hits and 2 walks in his 6 innings, and stranding 9 of the 12 runners.
Meanwhile, Detroit grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the 4th on a double that Andrew McCutchen surprisingly was unable to haul in near the center field wall. They added 2 off Gerrit Cole (0-2) on an RBI double by Tyler Collins and a sacrifice fly by just called up catcher Bobby Wilson.
The Tiger bullpen flashed back to 2015 by allowing 3 runs in the top of the 7th. But the Tigers tacked on three of their own in the bottom half, thanks to a sacrifice fly by J.D. Martinez and a two riun shot by Nick Castellanos, bringing his totals for the day up to 4 RBI.
Francisco Rodriguez got his second save with a clean ninth inning. The Tigers trail the White Sox and Royals (7-2) by a half game.

Astros 1, Tigers 0 Tigers record 6-3
The Tigers had scored 4 or more runs in all 8 games prior to Friday.
Reigning AL Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel put a stop to that by pitching 8 scoreless innings in Houston, allowing only 5 hits.
The one run scored (in the first inning) off Tigers' starter Mike Pelfrey (0-2) stood up. Pelfrey, despite allowing six walks and five hits while throwing over 100 pitches in 6 innings, took the loss. Three Detroit double plays helped the ground ball pitcher stay out of any serious trouble.

Tigers 5, Astros 3 Tigers record 7-3
Justin Verlander looked finished in the first inning against the Astros, giving up three runs. George Springer knocked in Jose Altuve with a home run and Tyler White followed with a solo shot.
He regrouped through an often bumpy 6 innings though, throwing over 100 pitches in his six innings.
It was enough to claim his first win thanks to Jarrod Saltalamacchia's 3rd home run, a 2 run blast that gave the Tigers a 4-3 lead that they would not relinquish.
Justin Wilson and Mark Lowe both recorded holds for the improving Detroit bullpen. Lowe was extremely efficient, needing but 4 pitches to dispatch the Astros in the 8th inning. Francisco Rodriguez continued to rebound from his opening day debacle, earning the save with a hitless ninth.

Sunday afternoon.
Astros 5, Tigers 4 Tigers' record 7-4
Anibal Sanchez has his strikeout pitches working but his command is lacking. The Astros kick another Tiger starter around, opening a 5-0 lead after 4 innings featuring another HR by "Mighty Mouse" Jose Altuve (his 4th) and an "dinger" by Springer.
Mike Fiers is fine for four, then the Tigers homer show starts thanks to wunderking newcomer (C Jariod Saltalamachhia), then a 2 run shot by Ian Kinsler to make it 5-3 after 5. J.D. Martinez joins the club to pull the Tigers to within 5-4.
But then the pen comes in, and puts the "Fiers" out.

Last night in Kansas city
Royals 8, Tigers 6 Tigers' record 7-5
It must be ground hog day.
Another day. Another opponent spotted a 5-0 lead...
Tigers pitching.
What a stunning reversal. The team that just in late 2014 boasted a rotation with three former Cy Young winners now is left with but one, and an ineffective one at that (Verlander).
And the bullpen that was a tinderbox for years looks solid? Wow...
The starter (Shane Greene) spots the Royals 5-0 and 8-2 leads. The pen comes in and shuts it down, and Detroit rallies to at least make it interesting at 8-6.
They can't keep spotting their opponents 5-0 leads and get away with it. After all, they don't have Craig Kimbrel to lock it down if they do finally get ahead in the late innings.
Oh, right. Boston has Kimbrel and he is the former Detroit GM's latest flop as a "proven" closer...
Dombrowski closer choice = kiss of death.

Wednesday night in Kansas City
Tigers 3 Royals 2 Tigers record 8-5
The Tigers pecked away at the Royals, scoring a run on a double by Ian Kinsler in the third, and knocking in Jarrod Saltalamacchia. They may have had more but Jose Iglesias was thrown out trying to stretch a hit into a double a few batters earlier. Jarrod Dyson gunned him down at second.
Victor Martinez singled in Kinsler in the sixth, and the Tigers concluded their scoring in the top of the ninth. This time Kinsler singled Saltalamachhia in making it 3-0 going to the bottom of the ninth.
That run turned out to be the game winner as Francisco Rodriguez, in what he himself called an "embarrassing performance", allowed back-to-back home runs to Alex Gordon and Tiger nemesis Salvadore Perez.
Jordan Zimmerman went 6 2/3 scoreless innings, moving to 3-0. He has yet to allow a run this season.

Thursday night in Kansas City
Royals 4, Tigers 0 Tigers record 8-6
The Royals showed the Tigers why they remain the class of the division, taking the series two games to one on a brilliant pitching performance by Edinson Volquez, who moved to 3-0 on the young season.
Mike Pelfrey took the loss for Detroit, going to 0-3. He had more traffic on the base paths again than what one sees on an L.A. freeway in rush hour. He gave up 8 hits and five walks, good for all four of the Royals runs (3 earned) in 5 shaky innings. His ERA stands at 4.98 and were it not for at least 6 double plays turned in his behalf by the defense in the three starts he has made (including 3 in his last start vs Houston), the ERA would be around 7. When Al Avila made the decision to sign him last winter (a dubious move i.m.o.), he cited his ability to coax hitters into putting the ball on the ground. That is fine and dandy but anybody can get double play grounders when there is always traffic on the bases.
The Royals caught him not paying attention to two of those base runners after Mike Moustakas had blasted a 2-run HR to put KC up 3-0. Lorenzo Cain was the front end of a double steal, moving to third while Eric Hosmer slid into second on the throw to 3rd. Nick Castellanos' error plated Cain, giving the Roylas their 4th and final run.
Detroit continued a trend of horrible base running that dates back all the way to last year. Jose Iglesias, a culprit from just last night, foolheartedly attempted to stretch a hit into a double and was gunned down by one of the best outfielders in baseball, none other than Alex Gordon.
Fundamentals, crisp pitching and timely hitting earn victories and unfortunately for the Tigers, the Royals came up all aces tonight.

Friday night.
Indians 2 Tigers 1 Tigers record 8-7, 3rd place ALC, 2.5 GB of Kansas City.
Tigers held to one run. Must have been Danny Santana, or Carlos Carrasco, right? Or Corey Kluber right? Well, no, not as long as Miguel Cabrera is a Tiger.
How about 5th starter Josh Tomlin? Bingo. Figures. A 6th inning double by Justin Upton, scoring Ian Kinsler. Thats it.
For Cleveland, Carlos Santana opened the game with one of his "greatest hits" - a leadoff home run and it looked like there might be a lot of scoring. But Justin Verlander (1-2) settled down, allowing only the 7th inning go-ahead home run by Marlon Byrd to answer the run that got it tied for Detroit just a half inning earlier. JV struck out 10.
Saturday, it is Corey Kluber's turn to get "lit up" by Miggy. Someone needs to get the Tigers lit up. 1 run scored in their last 18 innings.

Saturday afternoon
Indians 10, Tigers 1 Tigers record 8-8, 4th in ALC, 3 GB of Chi White Sox
So much for Miggy or anyone else "lighting up" Corey Kluber.
The Tribe lit up Tiger Anibal Sanchez like a 4th of July fireworks display. They scored 3 in the first (becoming a very troublesome inning lately), then chased him with 5 in the 3rd and the rest of the day was meaningless.
Sanchez (2-2) had his ERA climb to 7.00 and he is leaving too many balls up high in the strike zone with his new delivery. He had better get the "kinks" worked or he is going to have a miserable season.
Jan Gomes led a balanced Indians attack with 5 RBI and a homer. The lone highlight for Detroit was a solo HR by Jarrod Saltalamacchia (his 6th) in the fifth inning as the Indians (8-7) passed Detroit and into 3rd place in the Central.

Makes little sense at this point. verlander , Sanchez ERA look like Richter scale recordings from the Japan earthquake. Pelfry's looks good but wins/losses not so much and Zimmerman has yet to give up a run. Addit up and it comes out .500 just a weird way to get there.
