Sunday afternoon.
Indians 6, Tigers 3 Tigers' record 8-9, 4th place, 4 GB of Chi White Sox
This one was a punch to my gut. My first of the year with the wife at the ballpark.
Good God Ausmus, I understand sitting one of your slumping stars, but did you have to sit both Justin Upton and Miguel Cabrera on the same day? This made the bottom three in the Tigers' "attack" consist of Mike Aviles (.083), Andrew Romine (.100) and Anthony Gose (.174).
Should have given me our money back. Pinch hit Miguel Cabrera in the 8th with the bases loaded and two out, but "Mighty Casey" struck out.
Shane Greene left in the 3rd with a blistered middle finger. Mine is just "worn out", LOL. The roof fell in on Drew VerHagen, racked for 5 runs in 1 and a third innings.
Nuff said.

Monday night
Tigers 7, Athletics 3 Tigers record 9-9, 4 GB of Chi White Sox
It was like "Good Times" again, at last.
Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez hit back to back homers. Miggy was 4-4 with a solo HR in the first and a three-run shot in the fifth...just before Victor went yard making it 6-0.
Newcomer Jordan Zimmermann had his season opening streak of 24 and a third innings snapped in the sixth but got the win to improve to 4-0 on the young season.

Tuesday night
Athletics 5, Tigers 1 Tigers record 9-10, 4th place, 5 GB of Chi White Sox
Well, if the Tigers hoped to create any momentum from Monday's turnaround, this one doused it in cold vinegar.
Nice catch Justin Upton against wall in third inning. Leaped at wall, got it in his glove, it popped out and he grabbed it coming down for the out.
That was the good thing.
On the "flipside" Mike Pelfrey undid Zimmermann's 4-0 start by moving to 0-4. He gave up 5 runs on 9 hits in 6 and two thirds but did not walk anyone. Good thing or he'd have given up 8... Tiger offense...

Indians 7 Tigers 3 Tigers record 14-11, 2nd place ALC, 4GB Chi White Sox
I am posting late because I chose not to jinx the team on it's winning streak, so I eschewed comment until it lost.
It all came tumbling down in a hurry for Justin Verlander Monday night in Cleveland. There were already two men on and one out in the bottom of the first when JV faced Michael Brantley. He hit a rocket straight at CF Anthony Gose and it looked like Verlander might get out of the jam, because next he got Mike Napoli swinging and missing on two high, hard ones. With strike two, JV went high again but not high enough, nor hard enough and Napoli knocked in Jason Kipnis and francisco Lindor.
Verlander would get but two swinging strikes against the Tribe for the rest of the evening. Ice cold Yan Gomes was up next and he doubled in Napoli, making it 3-0 Tribe. Immediately after Ian Kinsler hit a 2 run shot to get Detroit within two at 4-2 in the top of the 5th, Verlander had Francisco Lindor up in the bottom of the frame and he drove a low slider with not much movement into the seats, ending all drama with the Indians now up 7-2.
Nice 5 game winning streak preceded this debacle. Victor Martinez, Miguel Cabrera, Nick Castellanos and even Justin Upton swung red hot bats leading Detroit in taking three games in four at home vs the A's and then sweeping three at Minnesota.
Wednesday, April 27 - Tigers 9, A's 4
Thursday, April 28 - Tigers 7, A's 3
Friday, April 29 - Tigers 9, Twins 2
Saturday, April 30 - Tigers 4, Twins 1 Jordan Zimmermann goes to 5-0, 0.5. Goes on to be named AL Pitcher of the Month for April.
Sunday, May 1 - Tigers 6, Twins 5
Crazy game, this baseball...The Indians sweep the Tigers. They go on to lose 5 of their next 6. The Tigers take 6 of their next 7.
Then they face Cleveland and get touched up again. Hope the hot streak was not a mirage. It is fact that the hot streak was at the expense of the A's and Twins, two of the poorer teams in the league.

Indians 4, Tigers 0 Tigers record 14-12, 2nd place ALC, 4GB Chi White Sox
Maybe I should stop posting during losing streaks...
And maybe this team is only good enough to beat the dregs like the Twins and A's.
Red hot bats are stopped cold. By a guy (Corey Kluber) that they used to literally light up. 5th straight loss to the Indians.
Now I am not saying that the Indians do not have some talented people. They just got Michael Brantley back off the DL and yes, they have good pitching, although they will be missing the ace (i.m.o.) for a while until Carlos Carrasco heals up his hammy.
Detroit has to do better early in ballgames. For once they did not give up any runs in the first three innings. Problem is on offense...they had the bases loaded with one out in the the second and Corey Kluber had just delivered nine straight balls. So, ahead in the count, Jose Iglesias hits a chopper to 1B Mike Napoli, who forces Castellanos at home. Then Ian Kinsler strikes out, ending the inning.
The fourth inning begins with Justin Upton whacking a double. Nick Castellanos gets another single. First and third with nobody out. A ground ball hit anywhere on the infield except 3B by next man up James McCann could cause a double play, but would still give Detroit their first lead in the five games between the teams.
So, of course McCann hits a DP grounder to Juan Uribe at third, who checks Upton at the bag, then completes a double play. Anthony Gose strikes out. End of inning, effective end of game when Cleveland scores all four of the game's runs in the bottom of the frame off Anibal Sanchez. Kluber gets the CG shutout.

Indians 9, Tigers 4 Tigers record 14-13, tie 2nd place with Royals and Indians, 4 GB Chi White Sox Nick Castellanos hit a 3 run shot in the top of the 4th inning top pull Detroit within 4-3. Too sick to my stomach to comment further except to say that Michael Fulmer looks too much like Joba Chamberlain to make me happy. By the way, Joba Chamberlain finished the game for the Indians.

Rangers 5 Tigers 1
Tigers' record 14-14, 3rd place 5 GB Chi White Sox
Oh, oh.
Now they are really in trouble. Jordan Zimmermann takes his first loss as the losing streak hits 4. I was out of town beginning with this evening all the way through to Monday night but could see big trouble looming with this loss. Detroit hit Cole Hamels pretty well, even as lousy as they were in 2015, but not this time. Hamels (4-0, 2.68) completely befuddled them this time.
On the flip side, Zimmermann was in trouble almost from the get go. Light hitting Elvis Andrus put the Rangers on the board in the second, doubling in Mitch Moreland. Then the reserve catcher Bobby Wilson (who was just sent to Texas by the Tigers a few days ago, singled him in. Rougned Odor's solo HR in the fifth and two run double in the top of the ninth concluded the Rangers' scoring and the only run Detroit would score came on a DP grounder by Miguel Cabrera in the bottom half.

Saturday, May 7
Rangers 10, Tigers 5
Tigers' record 14-15, tie 3rd place ALC, 6 GB Chi White Sox
Mike Pelfrey. Gave up solo HRs to start the game by Rougned Odor and Nomar Mazara. Then he settled down for a while, long enough for Detroit to put up one in the second on a triple by Anthony Gose. Then the league's surprising leading hitter Nick Castellanos knocked in two with a single off A.J. Griffin in the third, making it 3-2 Detroit.
Ian Kinsler belted a two run shot to put the Tigers up 5-2 in the fourth and then Pelfrey couldn't handle the prosperity and promptly fell apart in the 6th, as Texas scored 5 to go up 7-5 and never looked back.
Want more details? Check a box score. 5 straight in the loss column for Detroit gift wrapped by the biggest free agent bust of the year.

Sunday May 8 Rangers 8, Tigers 3 Tigers' record 14-16. 4th place ALC, 7 GB of Chi White Sox Mothers' Day Massacre.Justin Verlander guaranteed that he would be dominant by tweet Saturday. He was spot on. He left after 7 innings with a 2-0 lead after striking out 9 batters. Then the bullpen took over. Last year in July while then GM and team president Dave Dombrowski was mulling over either adding more payroll for a stretch run or dealing Yoenis Cespedes and David Price away, the same Verlander left a game leading the Twins 6-1 after 7 and two-thirds innings, only to see the 2015 pen blow the game and eventually lose on a walkoff 3 run HR by Brian Dozier off Joakim Soria in a seven run ninth at Target Field. Patrick O' Kennedy summed up what changed the course of Tigers' history here. www.blessyouboys.com/2015/9/25/9341271/detroit-tigers-brian-dozier-walkoff-home-run-minnesota-twinsThis year, Tigers' faithful may look back on this game in the same light. This time the reserve catcher that they just sent to the rangers, yes, the same catcher that knocked in a run Friday to jump start the Rangers out of a 5-2 hole, came up with the game tied in the top of the eighth after Mark Lowe had allowed Texas to tie the game up, and hit a grand slam. 6-2 Rangers. Pink out the Park? How about STINK out the park! Bobby %$#$% Wilson! REALLY? I couldn't make this stuff up if I stayed up for six straight days. Six straight losses heading to Washington to play the first place Nationals and face Steven Strasburg.

Monday May 9 Nationals 5, Tigers 4 Tigers record 14-17, 4th pace ALC, 8GB of Chi White Sox I watched this game from start to finish, and even though the Tigers led all night until the 7th, I never thought for a moment that they would win this game. Nick Castellanos (who along with Jordan Zimmermann are the only pleasant surprises thus far in this loomingly ugly season) smacked a two run shot off Steven Strasburg in the first, making it 2-0 Detroit. As Strasburg continued to pile up strikeouts and look really sharp, Daniel Murphy singled in Anthony Rendon to make it 2-1 off up and down Tiger veteran SP Anibal Sanchez. When J.D. Martinez connected for another two run shot in the 5th, making it 4-1, to many it looked like it may be their night. But as usual, Sanchez came apart. This time, he allowed a two-run shot to Murphy, making it Detroit 4 Washington 3. Kyle Ryan attempted to out-do relievers Justin Wilson and Mark Lowe in ineptitude, and at least came close by allowing the game to be tied. Mark Lowe came in and showed why parents should cover their kids' eyes when any relief pitcher is working in a close game, by giving up a pinch hit, walk off HR to the immortal Clint Robinson (might as well nave been Clint Eastwood...do you feel lucky, well...do you...punk?)... They can fire Brad Ausmus and they should, but it isn't going to matter. This is a totally flawed team. I already everything I had. Seven straight losses. The last two could not be any more distressing. I start to think about football season, then I remember that means the Lions around here. Oh...did it again!

Tigers 5, Nationals 4
Tigers record 15-17, tie with KC Royals for 3rd place, 6.5 GB Chi White Sox
The streak is over. It took a questionable non-call when Anthony Gose slid into second base and failed to touch the bag. Looked like an inning ending double play according to the new sliding rules but the relay did not beat Andrew Romine and first and it was ruled, then confirmed by video review that while Gose was not in range to touch second base that he did not interfere with shortstop Danny Espinosa's ability to both field and make the relay throw.
This allowed Justin Upton to score the lead run making it 4-3 Tigers, and moved James McCann to third. Miguel Cabrera singled McCann home with what proved to be the winning run, making it 5-3 Detroit.
Detroit earlier had managed two home runs against Joe Ross (3-2), who came in holding right handed hitters to a .132 average. Red hot Nick Castellanos helped cool Ross off with a 2 run shot that put Detroit up 2-1 in the top of the fourth. He was charged with all five runs and eight hits, taking the loss.
Ryan Zimmerman emerged from a year long funk and hit a two run shot in the third that put the Nationals ahead temporarily 3-2, then knocked a solo one out in the sevent accounting for the last Washington run.
Francisco Rodriguez allowed one hit in the ninth and earned his eighth save for the Tigers. Michael Fulmer got the win (2-0).

Nationals 3 Tigers 2 Tigers record 15-18, 4th place ALC, 7 GB Chi White Sox "Strikeouts are sexy" - Max Scherzer I don't know about that but they were certainly plentiful. The "full of himself" one racked up 20 of them to tie a MLB record for a nine-inning game with Roger Clemens (twice, ten years apart), Randy Johnson and Kerry Wood (who also fashioned a one-hit shutout in the game). Remarkably, none of them walked a single batter. The contest was one of the most exciting games I have watched in many years with a big "BUT" I'll get to later... The Nationals' righthander went to only one three ball count all night and threw a remarkable 96 of 119 pitches for strikes. He seemed to be 0-2 on 75% of the batters and 1-2 on most of the remainder. Actually, to the credit of the Tigers, the game was anyone's to take regardless, absolutely remarkable given the power, control and movement Scherzer had on display all evening long. His sliders were biting like rattlesnakes and the fastballs were as hot as molten lava, but just the same somehow Detroit managed six hits. Among them was a surprising home run by Jose Iglesias in the top of the third. The light hitting shortstop swung like Mighty Casey at a high, inside fastball but instead of missing it, muscled it into row number one in the left field corner...tying the game at 1. Former Nationals' and now Tigers' starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann gave up a run in the first on a one-out single by Daniel Murphy. Zimmermann settled down and stranded Bryce Harper at third base. The Washington faithful gave him a rousing ovation and the game had to be paused momentarily while Jordan waced his cap acknowledging it, when he batted for Detroit in the third in appreciation for six fine seasons in their behalf. He left trailing 3-1 after seven strong innings and after Murphy knocked in Rendon again in the 6th and Danny Espinosa hit a solo home run in the seventh. Sadly, in a game that featured almost everything you'd hope for, something again reared its ugly head. No Tigers game is complete without baffling strategy by the buffoonish manager Brad Ausmus. With Zimmermann done for the night, "Bradley" passed on an opportunity to make a double switch before the eighth inning started, or if not that, a better choice to pinch hit than what he ultimately chose. To get Nick Castellanos into the game (the guy is by far the hottest hitter on the ballclub for both power and and average - leading the AL in average), he could have double switched and put incoming pitcher Kyle Ryan in James McCann's 6th position in the order. Then he would have been able to have Jarrod Saltalamacchia enter as a pinch hitter in the 9 spot and simply remain in the game. Why was this important? Well, McCann seemingly needs to bat .500 for a week solid to even make the Mendoza line (currently .108), and when the Dartmouth Dunce elected to just have Salty pinch hit for the pitcher...he left himself without a catcher on the bench. So, in the 9th with a man on, after J.D. Martinez belted a home run leading off the 9th inning to bring Detroit within a run making it 3-2 Nats, Victor Martinez singled with one out. Now Ausmus pinch runs Andrew Romine for Victor, so there goes your "emergency" catcher if you want to give Castellanos a shot at tying the game or going ahead. Justin Upton strikes out for what seems like the 1,000th time this season, the record-tying 20th for Scherzer, making it two out. The up to bat walks "Mr .108" McCann. Max did not strike him out for the fourth time on the night to break the strikeout record for a pitcher in nine innings but got him to meekly roll over and hit a grounder to short to end the game. For crying in the night...even if Ausmus did not double switch he could have had Nick pinch hit in the 8th then be done for the evening and simply saved Salty to bat in the 9th for McCann and stay in the game.

Thursday night Orioles 7 Tigers 5 Tigers record 15-19, 4th place 7.5 GB Chi White Sox This was possibly the worst...right even with the "Mother's Day Massacre" just 5 days ago. Detroit 5, Baltimore 0 after 5 innings. Mike Pelfrey actually looking like a real pitcher. The Tigers were hitting and knocked Ubaldo Jiminez from the box, even though they left an astounding 11 runners on base. But Cinderella ran into midnight in her usual spot...the 6th inning. She was still in line for the win before she was pulled with one out. The inning ended Detroit 5, Baltimore 2. The the bottom of the seventh happened. Baltimore is known for hitting home runs in their little bandbox of a ballpark but this is ridiculous...Alex and Justin Wilson should be hung, drawn and quartered. Caleb Joseph lines out to left off Alex Wilson. Joey Rickard singles to center. Manny Machado singles to right, Rickard to second. Adam Jones singles in Joey Rickard, Manny Machado takes 3rd. Det 5 Bal 3. Justin Wilson, the lefty, enters the game to face a string of lefthanded batters. Chris davis singles to right, Adam Jones to 3rd, Manny Machado scores. Det 5 Bal 4. Mark Trumbo flies to left. Two out. Pedro Alvarez singles to right, Adam Jones scores, Chris Davis takes 3rd. Det 5 Bal 5. Jonathan Schoop tripled to right, C.Davis scored, Pedro Álvarez scored. Bal 7, Det 5. Ryan Flaherty grounds to Iglesias at shortstop. 3 outs. Detroit goes meekly on offense innings 8 and 9...as usual.

Saturday night May 14
Orioles 9 Tigers 3
Tigers' record 15-21, 4th place, 8 GB Chi White Sox
Scoreless game until Miguel Cabrera connects for a two run shot off Mike Wright in the fifth to give the Tigers the lead 2-0.
Anibal Sanchez is no Superman, but his kryptonite is the 6th inning. With two out, Mark Trumbo doubled in Adam Jones making it 2-1. Then Matt Wieters homered to knock Trumbo in and the inning ended like most innings after the tigers take the lead...with them trailing, this time 3-2 after six.
When Anibal immediately surrenders a leadoff home run to Jonathan Schoop to begin the bottom of the seventh, his night is over. But the Orioles are just beginning the festivities.
After Victor Martinez' solo home run brings Detroit within 4-3, the roof caves in on young Drew VerHagen in the bottom of the eighth. Adam Jones starts things off with a long home run making it 5-3. Jonathan Schoop hits his second home run of the night off VerHagen, a grand slam accounting for the final 9-3 tally.

Sunday afternoon May 15
Tigers 6, Orioles 5
Tigers record 16-21, 4th place ALC, 7 GB of Chi White Sox
Let's make this a simple summary. After Detroit blew a 4-3 lead after climbing back from a 3-0 deficit, it appeared that standout Orioles set up man Darren O'Day had thrown one of his sidearm offerings by J.D. Martinez to end the top of the eighth inning. It was ruled that he checked his swing. Given new life, he slammed the 3-2 pitch into deep center, tying the game. Miguel Cabrera, seizing the chance to put Detroit ahead, did not disappoint, slamming the very next pitch out of there, as O'Day slammed his mitt to the ground in frustration.
Rookie Australian import Warwick Saupold earned (applicable term here) his first major league victory by hurling 2 and two-thirds scoreless innings with four strikeouts against the hard hitting Orioles. Francisco Rodriguez notched his 9th save in ten chances in lifting the Tigers out of an 11 losses in 12 games quagmire.

Monday night May 16
Tigers 10, Orioles 8
Tigers' record 17-21, 4th place ALC, 6.5 GB of Chi White Sox
The Tigers erupted for an 8 spot in the first off young Minnesota starter Jose Berrios and Pat Dean and the rout was on.
Or wasn't...
Ian Kinsler led off the bottom of the first with his 8th home run. Following singles by J.D. Martinez and Miguel Cabrera, Nick Castellanos singled in J.D. making it 2-0. Berrios then walked in a run when Jarrod Saltalamacchia reached. Two batters later, Jose Iglesias cleared the bases with a double, making it 6-0 Detroit. Pat Dean relieved Berrios and Kinsler, in his second at bat of the inning, doubled Jose in making it 7-0. J.D. Martinez concluded the damage, doubling Kinsler in and making it 8-0.
With ace righthander Jordan Zimmermann on the hill, certainly the Tigers had this one wrapped up right?
Wrong.
The Twins answered immediately with a 2 run shot from Kurt Suzuki, making it 8-2 and continued pecking away and closing to within 8-7 after the top of the 4th.
The bottom of the fourth featured the unraveling of normally reserved Tigers' manager after a called third strike on Nick Castellanos, following a number of questionable strikes called.
J.D. Martinez dropped a routine fly ball for an error that allowed the Twins to make it all the way back at 8-8 in the top of the 7th. Fortunately for the Tigers, they averted what would have been a catastrophic collapse when Nick Castellanos and the aforementioned J.D. Martinez went back to back with home runs off Pat Dean, making the final 10-8. Francisco Rodriguez earned his 10th save in 11 tries and despite giving up 8 runs (7 earned) in seven innings, Zimmermann earned his 6th win while striking out 9.

Tuesday, May 17
Tigers 7, Twins 2
Tigers record 18-21, 4th place ALC, 5.5 GB of Chi White Sox
It wasn't pretty and Mike Pelfrey (no decision 0-4) again failed to complete six innings as in every start so far this season, but the team got it done and claimed its 3rd straight win.
Joe Mauer hit his second home run in the fifth, putting the Twins up 1-0, then Miguel Sano hit his 7th in the sixth, putting the Twins up 2-0 and ending Pelfrey's night after 96 offerings (56 strikes).
But the Tigers struck for 7 in the bottom of the seventh. Victor Martinez got it going with a sacrifice fly making it 2-1. Then Cameron Maybin, who has been red hot since joining the team off the DL Sunday, knocked in Nick Castellanos and sent Justin Upton to third with his single, tying it at 2-2. Jose Iglesias singled them both in making it 4-2 Detroit. Back to back home runs by Ian Kinsler (9, a two run shot) and J.D. Martinez (8) made it 7-2 and that's how it wound up.
Kyle Ryan (1-1) got the win for the Tigers and the bullpen came up with a rare effort, not allowing the Twins a run.

Wednesday afternoon May 18
Tigers 6, Twins 3
Tigers record 19-21, 4th place ALC, 5GB of Chi White Sox
Boy they'd love to face the Twins every day. But since they can't they'll take a sweep to get within two games of the .500 mark.
J.D. Martinez knocked in the game's first run with a single in the bottom of the first. A Miguel Cabrera sacrifice fly made it 2-0 in the third, then a Justin Upton single got it to 3-0.
Ian Kinsler's single knocked in Cameron Maybin in the fourth and then his solo home run (10) made it 5-0 after 6.
Justin Verlander (3-4) and the team coasted to the victory from there. Verlander recorded 10 strikeouts in 7 innings (including the 2,000th of his career when he got Danny Valencia in the 6th inning. Francisco Rodriguez recorded his 11th save in 12 tries.

Before the season started, many observers and followers of the Tigers said that the success or lack of that they would have this season depended upon how Anibal Sanchez pitches.
I hope that they are wrong, because not only did he not make it out of the sixth inning (again) but also got touched up for three runs in the top of the first, beginning with yet another leading the game off HR given up by a Tigers starter. This time it was Steven Souza Jr. doing the honors (9).
Detroit rallied back to tie with a run in the second, and a two run shot by Miguel Cabrera (7) in the third.
But the old bugaboo of a starter not making it through six innings and a reliever giving up inherited base runners struck again. Sanchez (3-5) began the 6th with a single and a walk and was yanked in favor of Kyle Ryan. Ryan retired two batters but gave up another walk to load the bases. Then he allowed the crusher - a bases clearing three run triple to right field by Kevin Kiermaier.
The Tigers got closer with a Miguel Cabrera 8th inning solo HR (8), but ultimately lost 7-5. Matt Andriese (3-0) allowed 4 ER but picked up the win for the Rays. Alex Colome notched his 11th save.

Saturday night May 21
Tigers 5 Rays 4
Tigers record 20-22, .476, 4th place ALC, 4.5 GB Chi White Sox
Michael Fulmer (3-1, 5.13) had the best start in his young career, punching out 11 Rays and giving up only one run and four hits through 7 innings.
Cameron Maybin continued his torrid hitting (3-4 in the game, .647 since coming off the DL), including a leadoff home run putting the Tigers up 1-0 in the third inning. Fulmer's omly mistake of consequence was Evan Longoria's solo home run (8) in the sixth, but James McCann's two run home run in the seventh(1) put Detroit back ahead 3-1 and J.D. Martinez followed with another two run shot making it 5-1.
They needed all the runs as Justin Wilson's ineffectiveness made it interesting but Tampa Bay could only get it to 5-4 before Francisco Rodriguez was able to earn his 12th save in 13 tries.

Sunday afternoon May 22
Tigers 9, Rays 4
Tigers' record 21-22, .488, 4th place ALC, 4.5 GB Chi White Sox
In a game that featured a lot of hitting, the Tigers got two scares. One was when winner Jordan Zimmermann (7-2, 2.52) had to leave the game with a groin injury while leading 6-2 in the sixth and another was when Miguel Cabrera was struck by a pitch in the knee in the seventh.
The anticipated pitching duel between the Rays' Chris Archer (3-5, 5.16 after completion of the game) and Zimmermann came unraveled fast. J.D Martinez and Cabrera knocked in first inning runs to put Detroit up 2-0 in the first. The Rays quickly tied it 2-2 on Logan Morrison's two run shot in the second.
But a relentless offense put some distance between the teams, as Andrew Romine tripled in a run in the second. Miguel Cabrera started the third with a home run (9) making it 4-2. Later that inning, red hot Cameron Maybin singled in two more, making it 6-2.
Tim Beckham's two run home run (2) in the seventh got the rays within 6-4 but that was it as Detroit won for the 6th time in seven games on the home stand.

Monday, May 23, Comerica Park, Detroit
Tigers 5, Phillies 4
Tigers record 22-22, .500, 4th place ALC, 4.5 GB Chi White Sox
Miguel Cabrera is morphing back in to the monster that won a triple crown in 2012 and almost repeated in 2013. His two solo home runs (11) helped the Tigers (the remainder of whom were playing effective "small ball") to a 5-4 victory that enabled them to get back to the .500 mark.
Detroit showed little respect for Phillies wunderkind SP Vince Velasquez (5-1, 2.75) in striking for 9 hits and 3 runs in 4 innings. The Tigers' Mike Pelfrey (0-4, 5.55) pitched six full innings for the first time but did not earn the win asfter giving up 11 hits and a solo HR to Tommy Joseph (2) that tied the game at 4.
Victor Martinez singled in Miguel Cabrera for the winner off Colton Murray (0-1, 1.74) to provide the winning margin for Detroit in the seventh. Francisco Rodriguez saved it to give him 13 saves in 14 attempts, for Justin Wilson (1-1, 4.50)

Tuesday May 24 , Comerica Park, Detroit
Tigers 3, Phillies 1
Tigers' record 23-22, .511, 4th place ALC, 3.5 GB Chi White Sox
Two things are key to the success or lack thereof for these Tigers. That would be 1) the effectiveness of Justin Verlander at the top of the rotation and 2) the health and power at the plate by Miguel Cabrera. Right now, both are in lock step in a positive way as the season eclipses the quarter pole.
Verlander (4-4, 4.02) went eight shutout innings in his best game of the season. That's four straight outstanding starts as he struck out 10 Phillies on the heels of a 10 K performance vs the Twins. Cabrera doubled in the first run and drove in the winner with a ground out vs. Jeremy Hellickson (4-3, 3.97) in the 6th before Victor Martinez singled in the third and final run for the Tigers.
Tommy Joseph's 9th inning sacrifice fly gave Philadelphia hope at 3-1, but Francisco Rodriguez finished up for his 14th save in 15 tries.

Wednesday afternoon May 25, Comerica Park, Detroit
Phillies 8, Tigers 5
Tigers record 23-23, .500, 4th place ALC, 3.5 GB Chi White Sox
The other pitcher mentioned as crucial to the Tigers' chances just behind Justin Verlander is Anibal Sanchez. Unfortunately his record so far this season has not earned a passing grade. The Tigers' defense was of little help to him in this game also.
With Odubel Herrera at the plate in the top of the second, Andres Blanco stole home on the back end of a double steal after James McCann attempted to throw out Peter Bourjos, who was really trying to bait him into making the throw. This was right after Bourjos singled in the game's first run, now it is 2-0 Phillies.
Sanchez gave up a 3 run homer in the 4th to Herrera (5) making it 5-1 Philadelphia. Aaron Nola (4-3, 3.14) had been mowing down Tiger batters before the 5th. Then Cameron Maybin, J.D. Martinez and Victor Martinez drove in runs with singles, making it 5-4.
But after getting beyond the point of his usual downfall all season (the sixth inning), Sanchez immediately served up a lead off 7th inning solo home run to Peter Bourjos (1). Anibal (3-6, 6.04) exited, Kyle Ryan came in and allowed a single to Freddy Galvis after striking out Herrara. Gene Lamont, acting as manager in place of Brad Ausmus (death of his mother), brought in Alex Wilson who immediately gave up a single to Maikel Franco and the sacrifice fly to Tommy Joseph. The 7-4 margin was too much to overcome.

Friday night, May 27 at O.co Coliseum, Oakland, CA
Tigers 4, Athletics 1
Tigers record 24-23, .511, 4th place ALC, 2.5 GB Chi White Sox and Kansas City Royals
Michael Fulmer (4-1, 3.97) pitched a gem five days ago, defeating Tampa Bay, allowing one run and striking out 11.
He pitched much more to contact tonight but the results were even better. Only 3 K's but no earned runs allowed in 7 and a third innings.
In the second, Cameron Maybin doubled in Justin Upton and James McCann singled him in to make it 2-0.
In the sixth, a solo HR by Nick Castellanos (10) made it 3-0. Then in the top of the 9th, a triple by J.D. Martinez that scored Ian Kinsler accounted for the other two runs.

Saturday afternoon, May 28 at O.Co Coliseum, Oakland, CA
Athletics 12, Tigers 3
Tigers record 24-24, .500, 4th place ALC, 2.5 GB Kansas City Royals
Young Matt Boyd started and pitched well for the Tigers, allowing 3 ER and striking out 7 in 5 and a third innings.
Brad Ausmus should be ashamed of what took place immediately following his departure.
The game was tied at 3. Australian rookie Warwick Saupold (0-1, 9.64) came in to pitch and obviously did not have it this afternoon. But Ausmus either did not notice or did not care as he left him in to be battered by six Athletics batters, all five balls hit hard plus a sacrifice fly and suddenly it was 8-3 Athletics.
Ausmus' explanation of "not wanting to go deeper in his bullpen that early" is hogwash. The pen was not worn out at all and he may have destroyed the confidence of a rookie pitcher who had pitched very well in all three of his previous outings. The pen besides Saupold was equally inflammatory so Detroit was likely going to lose anyway. It's just foolhardy to treat a young pitcher in this fashion.
Khris Davis added insult to injury with a 3 run shot (14) off Alex Wilson.

Sunday afternoon, May 29, O.Co Coliseum, Oakland, CA
Athletics 4 Tigers 2
Tigers record 24-25, .491, 4th place ALC, 3.5 GB Kansas City Royals
What good is having a very successful home stand where you go 7-2, if you follow that up by hitting the road and get trashed by a last place team 2 out of 3? You lop 6 games off the former division leader's lead (White Sox)...only to fall from 1 GB of the defending division and World Champion Royals to 3.5 GB.
Well, that's just what the Tigers did. They got their two runs early off Athletics ace Rich Hill (8-3, 2.25). James McCann singled in one in the second, then J.D. Martinez singled in another in the third for Detroit's final run.
That is one problem. The Tigers have one of the most feared offenses in MLB, yet they so often stop scoring early in games with leads. Getting Anibal Sanchez or tonight's starter Mike Pelfrey (0-5, 4.96) through 6 innings is yet another. Tonight, Pelfrey should have made it with two out and none on following a double play, but set himself up for trouble when he let the next two batters reach on a walk and a single. Then he could not deal with a little adversity thrown his way when Ian Kinsler (who two batters earlier had helped turn a double play) made a rare error with two out, tying the game at 2.
Good pitchers and teams for that matter, overcome this. But instead Pelfrey threw a wild pitch moving the two runners to 2nd and 3rd. Then he walked Marcus Semien and in comes reliever Justin Wilson. He gave up a single to Tiger killer Billy Butler (which fell just in front of CF Cameron Maybin), then allowed a sacrifice fly to Jake Smolinski that concluded the scoring and the chance for a Detroit victory on this day.
