SS is a wasteland. And I have Addison Russell and Corey Seager as my 2 prospects, so hoping Segura can just be ok until then. And there is so much pitching available, it was just like throwing darts at a board so plenty of quality pitching out there. Early on, I'll probably spot start everyone but Cueto, Gray, Fister & Ventura early on(I thin of those 4 as my top guys) and see what kinda start guys get off to. Not really overly worried about my hitting, especially if Fielder is back to himself. If you also have Fielder (who I do not see noted or mentioned earlier), then you are even better off than I though. Ah...I totally forgot to list my CI and MI spots when I posted my roster. Prince Fielder at CI and Howie Kendrick at MI. Definitely not sad about either of those.

I've now see Howie twice this spring, and both he and Rollins both look ready, and comfortable playing together as a double play combo

I never cease to be amazed by what I see in these leagues and drafts. Just earlier this afternoon... a guy in one of the yahoo leagues I am commissioner in. "I can't draft live, the Walking Dead is on". Christ, I posted the draft date February 4!!! You just figured out that the Walking Dead would be on? I pay bills for two households. One will not sell. One we live in. I am on disability. My wife has been laid up from knee surgery and because she pays in $500 a month for health insurance, has not earned a dime in six weeks yet somehow we have cable and a DVR. But he can't draft because he has to watch the Walking Dead. Sounds like the show is ALL ABOUT HIM!!!!

These people have no IDEA about how much WORK it is to set these leagues up.
They wait in their armchairs for it to start then bitch and moan about "there are not enough teams" or "the time does not work" etc etc etc.
I think next year I have NO commissioned leagues and just join existing ones where someone ELSE does all the sweating!!

AL only draft WEdnesday
We have a 23 players roster. I have $178 dollars left and 16 more players to draft
Trout and Miggy are both available to be drafted. I could probably get both for $80.
Would it be worth having $98 left for 14 players?

do you guys ever punt categories in roto?
thinking about not even worrying about saves, but making it up with nothing but starters and loading up on wins and k's
12 team league take a 0 in saves, 10's in both wins and k's, then middle of the pack in ERA and WHIP, say 5 each
conservatively, thats 30 points.
right now my pitchers are gray, duffy and smyly.

If he continues to have issues, it may be longer though.

The good closers are already being kept, leaving me with options like mujica , boxberger , nathan , clippard street and perkins are out there, but I'm not sure I want to pay for them. I think I can do just as well with a bunch of lower priced starters and then build a good offense to offset saves. Draft tonight.

Guys on decent teams that should win 12+ games.

Pretty much what I expect at the bottom of the barrel in 12 teamers as far as starters now. And, I think I would rather go with the guys you have, and in that order, vs. a lesser than closer. So, punt away my good man, and, I will try my best to check in and check back here to see if I can help again, but no promises, as the old work in box is still a mini mountain.....

Too bad it is Avila who needs to go, with him having little to no value at the moment. Aside from that, at least you know why and explained same as to things that I otherwise would have questioned. Not being sure of your league set up, hopefully you are in the spot of having money still to spend, with value guys still to be had on a waiver wire.

To anyone who plays or was thinking of playing in single day fantasy leagues, I hope you will find this article helpful.
One of the most difficult things about getting started with DFS (Daily Fantasy Sports) is you often can't fully understand the advice you're trying to absorb. There is a whole new world of lingo and not all of it is pretty. Glossaries are boring and no one has the patience to read them, so I'll try something different today.
The Good
You will soon learn that there isn't much better than overlay in a GPP (Guaranteed Prize Pool). GPPs are tournaments or cash games that are guaranteed to run no matter if they fill or not. Overlay is created when there are seats in a tournament left open. For example, the MLB Sac Fly on FanDuel is slated for 40,229 entries and pays the top 7,010 spots (17.4 percent). If the tournament only ends up with 35,000 entries the same number of people win the same amount of money. But, instead of needing to finish in the top 17 percent, you now need to finish in the top 20 percent. Your odds improve simply because not enough people signed up.
The cash games I mentioned above are games where your odds of winning are close to 50 percent and the payouts are close to 1-1. Some typical cash games are 50/50s (half the constestants nearly double their money), double ups (nearly half the contestants double their money) and head-to-heads (you vs. one other player). One strategical difference between tournaments and cash games is stacking.
Stacking involves getting as many hitters as possible from one game into your lineup. Ideally you would do this against one of the worst pitchers of the day. The idea is that if that team scores a bunch of runs, you should score a bunch of Fantasy points. Of course the downside is that your team can bust out just because of one game. This illustrates the point that you'd rather take on more risk with a high payout in tournaments, where you're looking for higher floors in cash games. As a beginner, cash games are much safer for your bankroll.
Bankroll management is the most important thing to understand for a new DFS player. Your bankroll is the amount of money you've made available to play. I would suggest that a brand new player play no more than 10 percent of their bankroll in the beginning and that they focus most of that on cash games. Once you've established yourself these rules get a little more flexible, but you should always have a plan for how you're going to manage your bankroll and you must stick to it.
The Bad
One thing you may have noticed above is that it doesn't seem like all of the money from a given contest is being paid out. That is because of the rake. Rake is a bad thing because it takes away from the prize pool and the bigger the rake is the worse it is. You can figure the rake of any event by taking the total entry fees minus the prize pool. One of the worst places for rake is in qualifiers or satellites.
These events offer a low-cost way to try to qualify for tickets to larger events that you may not be able to afford. In theory that sounds nice, but in practice these types of contests can destroy your bankroll. Your odds of hitting a qualifier are low and the odds of turning that ticket into a winner are even lower. For the poker crowd, playing satelittes is a little like betting on runner-runner after the flop.
As a new player you may be referred to as a fish, which may not make sense until you realize that the best players are often referred to as sharks. If you're going to play head-to-head contests, it is best to avoid matchups with these players unless you want to fully understand the analogy.
The Ugly
One of the ugliest moments in all of DFS comes at lineup lock, especially on nights with late breaking news. Baseball is much better than basketball in this regard, but you still need to be prepared that the best laid plans can go awry with a couple of late announcements. The benefit of FanDuel is that there is no late swapping. This means that when the first game of the contest starts all lineups are locked. In other words, you can't change a player out that starts at 9 p.m. if the 7 p.m. game has already started.
Minimum Salary plays can be the key to a big score. No batter on FanDuel will be priced below $2,200, but finding a $2,200 player that performs gives you more money to pay up, for pitcher. Paying up for pitcher is nearly a requirement, especially in cash games. The one thing you don't want to do is fall in love with these cheap plays. Some people may be tempted to play three to four so that they can afford Mike Trout and Clayton Kershaw. As a rule the more minimum salary plays you have the better your odds of busting out.
Finally, a tournament can get very ugly if you're a one-lineup player that likes to enter tournaments that allow multiple entries. At this point most of the high-dollar payouts allow players to enter up to 10 or more different lineups. You are at a severe disadvantage if you enter a tournament like this with 40,000 lineups and you've only taken one crack at it. For a beginner who only wants to play one lineup, I'd definitely suggest playing in tournaments that allow no more than one entry per contestant.
This is the tip of the iceberg, but hopefully gives you a decent base to start with when it comes to the language of DFS.

A bit surprising, but still not unexpected.
Red Sox placed RHP Koji Uehara on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 27, with a left hamstring strain.
The hope is that he'll be ready to go when first eligible on April 11, but Uehara admitted earlier this week to still feeling pain when he tried throwing from a mound. Edward Mujica will be the Red Sox' primary closer while Uehara is on the shelf.

For those still holding Benoit, or, for those VERY desperate for a closer today, the new guy in Atlanta is Jason Grilli.
Use at your own risk, as old grilled cheeses tend to get moldy when left out too long......

Rockies manager Walt Weiss told LaTroy Hawkins that he would not be closing games for the time being.
Weiss termed it as Hawkins getting "a break" from closing, which strikes as incredibly euphemistic. In the first week of the season, Hawkins blew two saves and allowed five runs in 2 2/3 innings pitched. Rafael Betancourt and Adam Ottavino are in position to see the most save chances moving forward, but Ottavino is the one with the higher upside and the one to pick up if available

And, now hoping this is not too late. I think I would hold onto him in a keeper situation. Pitching is thin enough as it is, but in a single league fantasy situation, it is even more so. And, he should give you a good half seasons worth of stats this year, and should be a solid, o.k starter going forward.

Not the ROSTER ALERT it would have been a year or so ago, but -
Rockies optioned 1B Wilin Rosario to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Rosario wasn't getting much playing time and the Rockies needed bullpen help, so he was asked to pack his bags Wednesday and head for the farm. The 26-year-old has been on a steady decline since exploding onto the scene in 2012 with 28 home runs. He'll be the everyday first baseman for Albuquerque, though it shouldn't be too long of a stay for him there.
After talking with a bunch of Rockies fans this spring, I concur that this guy can't catch, and, is not that much of a 1B guy either. So, feel free to drop him now if you need a catcher on your fantasy team. BUT, don't flat forget about him, as he could easily come back to life, with a trade to an A.L team to be their D.H.
Stay tuned......
