The Buffalo Bills are putting the finishing touches on deal that will make Rex Ryan their next head coach, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Rex Ryan will inherit a Bills defense that led the NFL with 54 sacks this past season. The hiring of Ryan would complete an extensive coaching search for the Bills, who have interviewed 12 candidates since Doug Marrone opted out of his contract on Dec. 31. The Bills conducted a second interview with Ryan on Saturday night, sources told Schefter. Ryan spent the last six seasons with the Jets, going 46-50 and helping New York reach the AFC Championship Game in each of his first two years. But Ryan and general manager John Idzik were fired on Dec. 29 after the Jets went 4-12 and missed the playoffs for the fourth straight season. The 52-year-old Ryan also has interviewed for the Atlanta Falcons' coaching vacancy. The defensive-minded Ryan will inherit a Bills defense that ranked fourth in the NFL and had a league-leading 54 sacks this past season. espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12149930/buffalo-bills-hire-rex-ryan-next-head-coach

Sounds logical. He still won't have a QB.
Although I was really rooting for Manuel to succeed... and he might yet. But there are a whole bunch of bad habits to break.

I sure hope this rumor is true. I don't want Ryan in Atlanta.

Sure. Why not? Unless a team is willing to take a chance on an OC or DC and give them their first HC job, then the pool of ex HCs is not exactly deep.
As far as a QB goes. Honestly, it is not exactly a monumental task to replace the very replaceable Kyle Orton.

OK, but it si not like Ryan did not win some in NY. His offense? Blame the GM too for that mess. Not like they had all pros on offense that ryan did not get to perform. Keep in mind. Ryan had even his bad Jets teams play the Patriots well many times. That is a teams first goal. win your division. Ryan knows how to beat the Pats, he just did not have the offense to do it. He knows the division. who knows? It makes sense and you will not find any ex players say anything bad about him. I am no Jets fan or Ryan fan, but it makes sense.

All I know is I'm not looking forward to the Pats facing their defense twice a year.

Great hire by the Bills, though I don't understand why Rex would choose Buffalo over other options if he got any other offers. Seems like it's too similar of a situation as he had with the Jets what with the mess at QB. Regardless, Rex is a great coach and if he's given a GM that actually puts some talent on the roster they should be pretty good.

I don't know what that has to do with replacing Kyle Orton with a franchise QB instead if a stop gap replacement.

That is the point Grue. They won nine games with Orton. It is not like they are replacing a franchise QB. Manuel? I would not bet on him since the guys that drafted him are gone so they do not have any reason to make the pick look good. Orton was as ordinary as they could come his whole career so it is not like replacing a star QB.

Orton was as ordinary as they could come his whole career so it is not like replacing a star QB. We're talking past each other a bit. It is easy to replace Orton. He is very ordinary. On a scale from 1-10, he's probably a 4. You can find lots of 5s or 6s, maybe even a 7 and that's nice & all but it isn't going to win the Bills any Super Bowls. So finding a marginal improvement is easy. But finding a very good quarterback is not easy at all; especially one who can play in Buffalo. Where is THAT guy going to come from? I mean, once you get past Mariota and Winston (neither dropping to Buffalo unless JW steals some more crab legs), there is a big drop in QBs. You can get another average mid-round guy in 2015. Maybe a Christian Hackenberg in 2016 will be a mid-first round or second round guy; assuming he overcomes his sophomore slump and gets a little bit of protection. He's got the Tom Brady body and arm strength needed in a northeastern autumn. Finding a REAL replacement, not a band aid, is difficult because the location limits the physical characteristics of prospects and the draft order takes Buffalo out of the competition for elite guys. They need a bit of diamond-in-the-rough luck.
