A couple of years before my "FM Radio Awareness" came into being, the old KNUS station was one of many FM "renegade" stations that popped up all over the states in the late 60's. They usually were ran by college students, manned by college students, DJ's were stoned college students... and the music was nothing that was ever played on the good old AM stations. There are a couple of guys down here (Robert Wilonsky and George Gimarc primarily) who were plugged into the scene back then with a young up-and-comer named Mike Rhyner from the Dallas area who was in bands (including for a time one with a guy named Stevie Vaughan) that were a part of the scene. Fast forward... Wilonsky is an editor with the Dallas Morning News, Gimarc is an archivist of Dallas radio media and Rhyner was one of the founders of the Ticket (Dallas' first and still best sports talk radio station) 20 years ago and just inducted into the Texas Radio Hall Of Fame. The other day, he played a compilation of some stuff Gimarc found in a damn estate sale of an old engineer from those early days of Dallas radio. This is some seriously cool stuff. this is how we got from "there" to "here". Hardline Listens to Old KNUS Audio

Dark - yes. But profanity... never heard that over there. Hell - the audio clips are taken from live broadcasts. All "bleeps" are intact. And there are plenty of those. The only time I ever heard something get past their producers was when they had Johnny Unitas on once. He dropped a "F" bomb live and in stereo. Still crack up at that one.
