They lost out the first time when Seattle was given a franchise to start in 1976 along with Denver when the KC Scouts moved to Denver and the Seals were on life support soon to be the only team 'contracted' since the New York Americans in the 40's

Which ironically ended up also costing Seattle the Sonics cause of the money thrown into fixing the Key Arena before the era of state of the art arenas that now grace the landscape across the league. And Seattle wasn't going to play the stadium game when it became obvious that the Key wasn't finishing being paid for from the early-mid 90's remodel which similarly to Brooklyn's new arena was made to NOT have hockey as a tenant
