AC/DC just announced their newest studio album, Rock or Die, but the announcement also came with the sad news that Malcolm Young would be leaving the band indefinitely due to undisclosed health issues. Now, it’s being reported that Malcolm is being treated for dementia at a hospital in Australia.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, “sources connected to the Young family” have said that the band’s founding member and rhythm guitarist has been moved to a “nursing home facility” that specializes in dementia.
The report speculates that the facility in question is the Lulworth House at St. Luke’s in Elizabeth Bay, a suburb of Sydney.
The unnamed source said: “If you were in the roomwith [Malcolm] and walked out then came back in one minute later he wouldn’t remember who you are. He has a complete loss of short-term memory. His wife Linda has put him in full-time care.”
The famously tight-lipped Young family probably didn’t want this news to come out this way. They almost certainly were preparing some sort of statement to announce when they felt comfortabledoing so. It’s not clear whether the Morning Herald’s source is a member of the Young family or a friend.
We’ll continue to monitor this story as more information comes out. While Malcolm’s actual illnessor current place of care has not been confirmed, vague reports of Malcolm’s declining health have come out all year and Malcolm’s nephew Steve has replaced him every step of the way in 2014, and will continue to play rhythm guitar on the band’s next world tour in 2015.
It’s not official, but the writing is on the wall.
