The Patriots have traded longtime guard Logan Mankins to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for tight end Tim Wright and a fourth round draft pick, the Buccaneers confirmed.

Mankins was not at Patriots practice Tuesday. The nine-year veteran is a six-time Pro Bowl player and a first team all-pro in 2010. Mankins has the second highest salary on the Patriots, with a cap hit of $10.5 million and a base salary of $6.25 million. He had an acrimonious contract dispute with the team in 2010, but he eventually signed a six-year deal for $51 million. At 32, he is the highest paid guard in the NFL.
Wright, 24, is a second-year player who caught 54 passes for 571 yards and five touchdowns. He was the top receiving rookie tight end last season. His addition to the Patriots roster would help bolster its tight ends group, which has been beseeched this offseason by injuries to Rob Gronkowski and Michael Hoomanawanui.
Wright's salary for 2014 is $498,333. He is in the second year of a three-year rookie deal. The trade creates $5.755 million in cap space.
Mankins was drafted by the Patriots in the first round (32nd overall) of the 2005 draft. He was a three-time captain of the team and the 2012 Ed Block Courage Award winner. He started all 147 games he played for New England, including 17 postseason games
