Yu Darvish was quoted in an interview as saying teams should switch to a 6 man rotation and not worry about pitch counts as the extra day of rest will limit the number injuries.
Is he off his rocker or is he on to something?

As hard as these guys are throwing these days pitch counts aren't going away no matter how many days rest pitchers get. It is havoc on the tendons, ligaments, cartilage and muscles of the arm to throw the ball with such velocity over and over again in two to three hours. Throwing the curve ball at 75 mph or greater puts a great deal of stress on the arm as well. My son didn't throw hard but he threw his arm out throwing curve balls, knuckle curves and sliders. He was 12 years old when that happened. About the only kind of pitcher that has no worries is a knuckle baller like Phil Neikro. Phil could throw nine innings on minimal rest because he wasn't throwing hard and he wasn't throwing breaking balls.
Studies are being conducted at universities around the country to see exactly what it is that limits a pitcher's ability to throw repeatedly with and without rest. I heard on the radio that Harvard is conducting such a study.
