Mia and I had this same conversation last week. She's absolutely insisting that I not put up any yard signs. She kept bringing up the Black Lives Matter fiasco a few years ago. The cars driving up and down our cul-de-sac, stopping in front of our house. The signs disappearing out of our yard. The one that really freaked her out was the guy that parked across the street just staring at our house for over an hour, he drove off when I finally went out in the front yard and started walking towards his truck. It really scared her and I could see in her eyes that it still scares her. It kills me to give in to these assholes but I also can't have her stressed out about it. |

our present situation reminds me so much of the late 60s or early 70s. The difference of course was that before it was primarily young people vs older people. Now it's neighbor vs neighbor, co-worker vs co-worker...you can't just look and verify which way someone is leaning. I am very careful who I talk to about this stuff, I have been shocked many times by the realization of who has gone down the rabbit hole and are perfectly happy to reside there. I don't mean right against left or Democrat/GOP, I mean genuinely have bought into the whole MAGA bit. When my little group meets on Mondays and Fridays for coffee, it's usually for at least a couple of hours or so, but we do talk very quietly and discreetly. I actually find that to be more than a little scary. We have never talked specifically about the need for this, it was kind of a mutually accepted arrived upon decision. Isn't that more than just a little sad? |
