The Yankees on Wednesday night denied a report that said they would be retiring Derek Jeter’s number on Sunday when the team honors him at the Stadium.
Minutes after Newsday reported on its website that Jeter’s No. 2 would be retired during the pre-game ceremony before the Yanks take on the Royals, Yankees Director of Media Relations Jason Zillo told the Daily News “the report is completely inaccurate.”
The report said the Yankees planned to follow a similar script to the one they used a year ago with the retiring Mariano Rivera.
He was feted in a pre-game ceremony before the final Sunday home game and his No. 42 was retired; his final home game was four days later and the season concluded the following Sunday in Houston.
Of course, the number 42 already had been retired throughout baseball – for Jackie Robinson – and Rivera was the last to wear it.
The Yankees will ultimately retire Jeter’s number, but that will come at a later date.
When the Yankees retired Joe Torre’s No. 6 earlier this season, it made Jeter the last yankee to wear a single-digit number.

Stupid human tricks - Grounds crew accidentally mows artificial turf, ruins field It's baffling to imagine the thought process behind this. At some point in time someone had to say to themselves, "Hmmm, it's getting pretty long. We should probably mow this."

Whether or not this is good or bad news is in the eye of the beholder -
The Yankees intend to offer GM Brian Cashman a new contract at season’s end, sources tell Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Cashman’s current deal — a three-year extension signed after the 2011 campaign — expires after this year.
It is hard to argue with the results that the Yankees have enjoyed under Cashman. 2014 marked his 17th year at the helm of New York’s baseball operations. During that run, the team has never finished with a winning percentage lower than .525 and has qualified for the postseason in all but two years.
That has not stopped at least some speculation that Cashman’s time in the Bronx could be coming to an end, particularly given some reports of tension with ownership over baseball decisionmaking. (Of course, as Heyman notes, that is nothing new.) As things stand, the club’s current iteration owns its worst record under Cashman’s watch and would fail to make the postseason for consecutive years for the first time since he took over. On the heels of some rather significant offseason spending, that could be seen as evidence that a fresh voice was needed.
According to Heyman, however, Yankees ownership does not blame Cashman for the fact that free agent signees like Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran have not performed to expectations. Moreover, the organization feels that he did well to once more scramble a contending roster — this year, by adding turnaround pieces like Brandon McCarthy, Martin Prado, and Chase Headley.
Of course, it remains to be seen whether Cashman himself will want to re-up with New York. But Heyman says that his personal circumstances and preferences seem to align with continuity, making it likely that Cashman will remain the game’s third-longest-tenured GM.

At least the Muppet Fozzie Bear will be happy..........
Cardinals activated RHP Michael Wacha from the 60-day disabled list. Wacha missed nearly three months with a stress reaction in his throwing shoulder. He will return to the Cardinals' starting rotation on Thursday for the opening of a big four-game set against the Brewers. Wacha made it to just 34 pitches in his one rehab start at Double-A Springfield, so he probably won't go more than four innings in Milwaukee. Marco Gonzales will likely piggyback him.
"Wacha, Wacha, Wacha!"

From miles beyond way out in left field.........
If you are like me (i'm sorry), you may have had this thought before. That being, wouldn't it be cool if someone put anything like a real engine on those putt-putt scooters that old people use to get around in?
Well, somebody did. Sadly, it was not for ganndpa and grandma to use, but, to break/set a record. A guy just made one by hand, and, now has a top speed of 107.6 mph, and is waiting on the folks at Guinness to verify and confirm.
It turns out that this is actually already "a thing", as there is already a standing record of 82 mph.
"Go granny go!"

How funny / cool is this?
In more ways than one, long-time Mariners and current Yankees outfielder Ichiro Suzuki is one of the most unique players in baseball history. His hitting style is unteachable -- as in you wouldn't teach anyone to hit like that -- but his freakish hand-eye coordination has made it work.
Ichiro is also known as an all-world joker and character guy with a tremendous sense of humor. So much so that he's even learned to speak some Spanish throughout his career so he can trash talk opponents and get a laugh. Brad Lefton of the Wall Street Journal has more:
Ramon Santiago, the veteran shortstop of the Cincinnati Reds, recalls being startled and amused during his first encounter with Ichiro Suzuki in 2003. Santiago was barely into his first full season with Detroit when Ichiro's Mariners came to town. After a leadoff single to open the game, Ichiro dashed to second on a steal. As he popped up safely from his slide, he looked at Santiago and deadpanned in Spanish, "No corro casi."
Loosely translated, he was telling Santiago, a native of the Dominican Republic, "I don't have my legs today." Before Santiago could stop smiling, Ichiro was stealing third two pitches later on those same heavy legs.
"I knew he always spoke through an interpreter," Santiago said recently. "And that was for English, so of course I never imagined he could speak such nice Spanish."
...
Veteran first baseman Carlos Pena remembered one of his frequent encounters with Ichiro. He was defending first for the Tampa Bay Rays, and Ichiro had just arrived on one of his patented infield hits. Ichiro peered over at Pena and asked, "Que coño tu mira?," or, "What the hell are you looking at?" Pena clamped his lips together to prevent the laughter from bursting through.
Ichiro said he feels a special bond with Latin American players because they're all foreigners in a different country playing the game. And, he added, "we don't really have curse words in Japanese, so I like the fact that the Western languages allow me to say things that I otherwise can't."
Ichiro has picked up on Spanish through conversations with teammates over the years -- he still uses an interpreter for interviews because he is talking to fans and wants his message to be clear -- but he can't carry on a conversation in the language. He only knows some words and phrases.
There are very few players in baseball who could learn another language just to trash talk and still get a laugh out of opponents. Ichiro is that guy

I was in Korea for 3 years and picked up on a few phrases and sentences. Whenever I meet a Korean person I freak them out totally by speaking to them in Korean.

When the Red Sox acquired Allen Craig from the Cardinals in the John Lackey trade they were hoping a change of scenery would help him rediscover his pre-2014 form, but instead his season-long struggles have become even more extreme.
Craig struck out in all four his plate appearances yesterday and is now hitting .111 with 15 strikeouts in 10 games for the Red Sox.
Before this season–or, perhaps more accurately, before injuring his foot late last season–Craig hit .306 with an .850 OPS through 372 career games, but now Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com writes that Craig “couldn’t have looked more overmatched” and was “flailing at breaking balls way out of the strike zone.”
He’s under contract for $5.5 million in 2015, $9 million in 2016, $11 million in 2017, and $13 million or a $1 million buyout in 2018.

It is just funny to see the look on their faces when I speak some Korean to them or just happen to understand what they just said and make a comment on it. Never just assume you can speak in a differnent tongue and other people will not understand what you are saying. LOL You can get into a lot of trouble that way.

I know this is football. But, it is too worthy a story to pass up.
The Cincinnati Bengals player who was cut from the team and then brought onto the practice squad in order to help pay for his daughter’s cancer treatments says he sees the move as a “blessing in disguise.”
Defensive tackle Devon Still found out Saturday that he had been cut from the Bengals’ roster but then found out he had been given a second chance for his daughter, 4-year-old Leah, who was diagnosed with stage 4 pediatric cancer in June.
“I completely understand where the Bengals were coming from when they cut me because I couldn’t give football 100 percent right now,” Still, 25, told ABC News.
“They could have washed their hands with me and said they didn’t care about what I was going through off the field,” Still said. “It’s like a blessing in disguise for me.”
As a member of the Bengals’ practice squad, Still will receive medical insurance and a weekly salary of $6,300.
He will also be able to travel less, giving him more time to spend at home with Leah as she completes her treatment.
“We’re going to go to battle with cancer,” Still said. “She’s willing to put up a fight to beat it.”
Still announced his daughter's condition on Instagram earlier this summer.
