Everyone seems to be, especially in Pittsburgh, crying that the refs and replay officials blew the call on Jesse James' apparent TD reception in the latest edition of "The Game of the Century" Sunday, December 17.
The call was correct. The rule is ridiculous and must be changed. Do not scream bloody murder now and then forget about it after the Super Bowl when the rules committee convenes again.
What and how, exactly, should this rule be changed? Well, lets look at this logically. How many times do you see running backs leap over piles of defenders at the goal line, with the ball in one hand, breaking the plane of the goal line while the football is simultaneously being knocked out? Nobody whines that he does not "complete the process" of the "carry". TD. No question.
Now, if the same runner did this trying to get a first down, nobody in their right mind, will see that as anything but a fumble. So why is a pass receiver held to a different standard? As long as the receiver clearly has the football secured before he hits the ground, that should always be a touchdown.
What is clear here is that a catch, much like that carry that a runner makes that either breaks the plane of the goal line, or is in the end zone - should be a TD as soon as the receiver has clearly caught and controlled the football. The ground should be irrelevant because the ball has already been caught in the end zone.
Now, much like the case of the running back breaking the plane is considered a TD, and another runner doing the exactly the same thing (leaping for a first down) then losing possession of the football when it is not for a TD and is not in the end zone is considered a FUMBLE; a receiver that has secured and caught a ball anywhere else except in the end zone, and it then hits the ground, jarring the ball loose - this should NOT BE CONSIDERED AN INCOMPLETE PASS, but INSTEAD be called a FUMBLE! Right?
