Only Francis can generate that much excitement over a lefty specialist.

Only Francis can generate that much excitement over a lefty specialist. He actually would be a good lefty specialist. Unfortunately, they won't be using him that way.

Opponents hit just .107 off of Travis Wood with 2 outs and RISP in 2016. Clutch.

Wood fits perfectly with this team, being a world series champion and all. a team of winners He was on the World Championship team, and I got to like that signing better than almost every Tigers' bullpen signing. But, be careful not to paint with too broad a brush. There are some storm clouds... Wood was a do-it-all pitcher for the World Series champion Chicago Cubs in 2016: Not only did he hit a postseason home run, he played left field a couple of times during the regular season. He even made a nice play in one game, catching a ball at the wall at Wrigley Field. Wood made 77 appearances, going 4-0 with a 2.95 ERA in 61 innings. His effectiveness on the mound varied, based on his workload. Manager Joe Maddon eventually called on Wood less often as he began to struggle in second half of the season.
Wood was reliable against lefties but not so much against righties, who produced a .344 on-base percentage against him in 2016. By comparison, lefties got on-base just 21 percent of the time off him. He could offer the Royals plenty of versatility, as his athletic prowess allows him to pinch-hit, pinch-run or even play some defense. There were several times in 2016 where an injury knocked out a starter and Wood was called upon to keep a game close on a moment's notice. What he lacks in velocity he makes up in competitiveness, though he has to work the edges of the plate to be effective. Still, depends on how much dough...2 years, amounts not reported. I'd still give it props as a good move. www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/18679619/ex-cubs-left-hander-travis-wood-agrees-royals-2-year-deal

But I admire KC's pluckiness and willingness to think outside the box. It's worked before. They had the cojones to trade Wade Davis, and may have been prescient. They got the best he ever will have to offer.

.345 obp against righties, and he got tired. Go with 5 aces. It worked for us.
