2016 Preview: Texas Rangers Did anyone see the 2015 Rangers coming? Even themselves? They lost 95 games the year before and then lost their ace to Tommy John surgery. After that and then a slow start, you have to wonder what they truly thought their chances were last April and May, even if they wouldn’t admit it publicly. But . . . that’s why they play the games. Prince Fielder and Shin-Soo Choo had nice bounceback years. Adrian Beltre may beginning his decline years, but he’s still a potent force. Mitch Moreland and Rougned Odor were solid contributors and a lineup without any significant holes ended up scoring the third most runs in the American League. That lineup, for the most part, is back for 2016. The biggest change is the addition of Ian Desmond. He’ll be playing left field which should be somewhat interesting. Given the late and relatively low-money deal he ended up having to accept you have to figure he’s motivated, however. Given Odor’s strong second half and his age — he just turned 22 — suggest that a breakout season is not out of the question. The rotation will look a bit different this year. For one obvious thing, the Rangers will have Cole Hamels around all season, not just for a dozen starts. Yu Darvish is expected back in May sometime. Before Darvish comes back last season’s first-half surprise, Nick Martinez, should fill in and will be making a push to stay in the rotation. Old hands Derek Holland, who was limited to ten starts in 2015, and Colby Lewis, who improved somewhat from a disastrous 2014, are back as well. It’s hard to say what the Ranges will get from those two, but more Hamels, any amount of Darvish and a full season from the young Martin Perez give the Rangers a strong rotation by usual Texas Rangers standards. There’s a lot to like about this Rangers team but the extent of its upside is sort of hard to see given then uncertainties involved in Darvish’s return and another year on the odometer of Prince Fielder and Beltre. At the same time, Texas could get some significant boosts from some of its prospects like Nomar Mazara or Joey Gallo, each of whom could see some time in Arlington this year. And heck, Jurickson Profar is still hanging around. The once top prospect is still only 23. A solid base, not a ton of downside but some uncertainty at the top end is not idea, but it can play in the AL West. As I expect the Rangers to play. In the the thick of it all year long. Prediction: Second place, AL West. 2016 Preview: Texas Rangers

Next - I wouldn't pencil Nick Martinez in as that 5th starter quite yet. He has been getting hammered. If I were reading the tea leaves of the observers I trust with the Rangers, I would almost bet the house A.J. Griffin can win the job simply by pitching decent.
We still need another catcher. I don't believe the Rangers want Chirinos giving them 100 games. Problem is no one has shown an ability to step up and be a solid #2 - much less splitting starting duty. They are still shopping around. The good news is they have viable trade pieces in the minors.
The one thing I do know is this. If they stay healthy, they are going to hit and they are going to score runs. Lots of them. That may be what gets them to June when Yu should be back. Houston is younger and maybe a little deeper... and it should be a terrific race between them. What should also be fun is watching Carlos Correa and Rougie Odor grow up in the same division playing each other a lot. Both the same age... both finished with the same OPS last season...
Let's go.

Someone tell me again why the Rangers felt compelled to trade for this fucking rag arm Tom Wilhemsen please...
And can we just go ahead and cut his ass now?

Yu Darvish... 5 innings, 81 pitches, 7 strikeouts. Sure is nice having him back. He exceeded my own personal expectations. Figured it'd take him until July to get back to his former self, but he had an amazing outing on Saturday night.

Getting Holland at his old self and it helps that we chase a guy who was 7-0 going in tonight.

Getting Holland at his old self and it helps that we chase a guy who was 7-0 going in tonight. Yeah, the way this team owned a 7-0 Tomlin was huge... And speaking of this rotation, it might just be the best in the AL.

And speaking of this rotation, it might just be the best in the AL. Well... it might have been. Until now. Dark days ahead. 3/5 of the starters are now languishing on the IR. Losing Colby hurts big time. There are plenty of local crickets that despise him but all the dude does is chew up innings and save the bullpen. He's down for 2 months. Holland is down for a couple of weeks. Darvish is still on the mend which is to be expected after Tommy John. Good news is Griffin appears ready to return... along with Hamels and Perez having fine years. But anytime you look at the next 5 games and see the dreaded "TBD" listed as a starter, you know it's going to be a rough stretch on the horizon. Good news is they have the best record in the AL, a 10 game cushion in the AL West and the All Star break on the horizon. We'll need that equity.

Only good thing about this - he hasn't been hitting for shit. He's out of the line up. And if he has surgery - he's out for the year.

Goodbye Prince. Sure wish you could have stayed healthy. Pretty much seals the fact that the Tigers got the better of that deal.
Still - I'll take Odor at 2nd. Remembering Kinsler's feelings about being a clubhouse leader after Michael Young was traded: "They wanted me to lead these young players, teach them the way to compete, when the only thing I should be worried about is how I'm performing in the game." And - addressing his new situation in Detroit: "In Texas, it was almost like my team. I go to Detroit, and it's Miggy's (Miguel Cabrera’s) team, it's (Justin) Verlander's team. I'm just a ballplayer. I can just go play and have fun."
Odor may not be the player Kinsler is... but he is a far better teammate in the room. And that matters.
