Traded away Chandler Jones to get Jonathan Cooper and a 2nd-round pick, and then you go sign Chris Long.... This might be the greatest double move this entire offseason. The Jones trade also freed up the $$$ for Bennett. Pretty happy so far but I'm sure there's more to come

After all the moves, the Patriots have 11 draft picksPosted by Darin Gantt on March 17, 2016, 6:15 AM EDT Bill Belichick AP The Patriots don’t have a first-round draft pick, stripped away from them as part of the Deflategate penalties. But they have plenty of other picks, after recent trades have given them more ammunition and more flexibility come this year’s draft. Via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, the Patriots now have 11 total draft picks, though five of them are in the sixth round. Thanks to the second-rounder they added from Arizona in the Chandler Jones deal, they’ll have back-to-back selections in the second round. They also own Houston’s sixth-rounder from the Keshawn Martin trade, Chicago’s sixth from yesterday’s Martellus Bennett deal and Houston’s seventh from the hit-the-snooze-button Ryan Mallett deal. They also picked up a third-round compensatory pick and three compensatory sixth-rounders, picks which can’t be traded this year (the rules have changed to allow trading of comp picks starting next year). All told, the Patriots will draft 60th, 61st, 91st, 96th, 196th, 204th, 208th, 214th, 221st, 243rd and 250th. That leaves a big gulf in the middle, with no picks in the fourth or fifth rounds. But trying to move seems part of their M.O., and having that extra picks from trades should give them the flexibility to work the board as they traditionally do. profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/03/17/after-all-the-moves-the-patriots-have-11-draft-picks/#comment-4966662

think are already improved from last year. Biggest weakness was o-line but a lot of that was injuries. And Scarr is back! Need a RB and more o-line and they'll be set.

Chargers president lauds Pats pickup of BrownMarch 20, 2016, 2:30 pm BOCA RATON – Somewhat buried in the avalanche of last week’s Patriots transactions was the pickup of free agent running back Donald Brown. If you line up the other acquisitions made – Chris Hogan, Martellus Bennett, Shea McClellin, Jonathan Cooper and a second-round pick – Brown created the smallest buzz. Probably because he’s had the slightest impact. Over his past two seasons in San Diego, Brown accounted for 144 carries and 452 yards and a touchdown. The (almost) 29-year-old – a first-round pick in 2009 by the Colts – has started just 25 games in seven seasons. But the team Brown leaves behind thinks that, in New England, Brown is going to find football Valhalla. “He is such a perfect Patriots signing,” said John Spanos at the NFL Owner’s Meetings on Saturday night. “I would bet anything he’s going to be a productive player for them.” Why didn’t it work out in San Diego? “This past year, we drafted Melvin (Gordon) with the 15th pick and we had Woodhead and the opportunities just weren’t there. And before that we had Ryan Mathews. He’s a good player. It just didn’t work out here but I believe it will for him there. Perfect player for them. And he’s a guy who’ll be the first guy in, does his work, does whatever he’s asked and just keeps to himself. He’s one of the players you really root for after they leave.” The financial outlay for Brown is minimal. It’s a one-year, $965K deal with $300K guaranteed. He’ll come in with the chance to compete for reps in a running back group that includes sub-back Dion Lewis, Brandon Bolden, James White and Tyler Gaffney. White figures to be the guy that will find himself in immediate and direct competition with Brown. www.csnne.com/new-england-patriots/San-Diego-Chargers-president-lauds-New-England-Patriots-pickup-of-Donald-Brown

King: New Patriots DE Long is 'supremely motivated'March 20, 2016, 11:15 pm Chris Long, signed by the Patriots last week, won't necessarily be expected to replace Chandler Jones, but Peter King of Sports Illustrated still believes he will be able to make an impact. “He is supremely motivated to say the last two years are flukes,” said King. “You know what’s going to be really important? Getting him in a rotation. Don’t think about playing him 950 snaps. Think about 450. Get him with Jabaal Sheard and the guys on that line. I think that’s a good signing for them.“ Watch the video above for more. www.csnne.com/new-england-patriots/king-new-patriots-de-long-supremely-motivated

Is it football season yet? We need more action in this sweet Patriots Forum! Almost! And I'm working on it! bringing in Fairley for a visit Nick Fairley will be meeting with the New England Patriots during the NFL owners meetings this week. The free-agent defensive tackle, who was en route to Boca Raton, Fla., Monday morning, informed ESPN's Nick Wagoner of his plans. What's next in free agency and the draft for the Patriots? Make sure you're in the loop – take five seconds to sign up for our FREE Patriots newsletter now! Fairley, 28, recorded 29 tackles and a half-sack over 15 games with the then-St. Louis Rams this past season. The 6-foot-4, 308-pound Auburn product originally entered the league at No. 13 overall to the Detroit Lions in the 2011 draft, and accrued 98 tackles, 13.5 sacks and four forced fumbles over his four years with the organization. New England’s defensive tackle position currently includes Alan Branch, Malcom Brown, Dominique Easley, Ishmaa'ily Kitchen, Chris Jones, Joe Vellano and free-agent signing Frank Kearse. Though with Akiem Hicks now a Chicago Bear and Sealver Siliga once again a Seattle Seahawk, depth could continue to be added. wasn't sure what they Paid Long, but it's a bargain Money did not play a significant factor in Chris Long’s decision to join the New England Patriots. According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport and Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo, Long is scheduled to earn around $2 million over the course of his one-year deal with the Patriots. To add some contrast, Long had inked a four-year, $48.2 million extension with the then-St. Louis Rams prior to the 2012 season and was due a $2 million roster bonus from the organization this March before being released on Feb. 19. What's next in free agency and the draft for the Patriots? Make sure you're in the loop – take five seconds to sign up for our FREE Patriots newsletter now! Selected No. 2 overall in 2008 draft, Long spent his first eight NFL seasons with the Rams, amassing 246 tackles, 54.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles and eight pass deflections. The bookend put together back-to-back seasons of double-digit sacks in 2011 and 2012, but had been limited to four over his final two with the Rams, missing 14 games due to injury. Yet it is a new chapter for the 6-foot-3, 268-pound Long, who expected to add starting-caliber depth to the position in the mix with Jabaal Sheard and Rob Ninkovich, as well as Geneo Grissom, Trey Flowers and Rufus Johnson. Pro Bowler Chandler Jones, who was traded to the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday, was set to earn $7.799 million in the final year of his contract with New England. nep.247sports.com/Bolt/Defensive-tackle-Nick-Fairley-to-meet-with-Patriots-44390956

Patriots sign Nate Washington
Posted by Zac Jackson on March 24, 2016, 4:42 PM EDT Tennessee Titans v Atlanta Falcons Getty Images The Patriots are signing veteran wide receiver Nate Washington, ESPN’s Field Yates reported Thursday.
Washington, 32, has been a consistent producer with at least 40 receptions every year since 2008. He caught 47 passes for 658 yards and four touchdowns last year in his only season with the Texans.
Washington visited the Patriots last week. The Texans and Patriots run similar offensive systems, so he should catch on quickly and again play an active role.
Washington broke into the league with the Steelers in 2005. He had his biggest season in 2011 with the Titans, setting career highs with 74 catches, 1,023 yards and seven touchdowns. He played for the Titans from 2009-14.
He has 458 career receptions for 6,954 yards and 44 touchdowns.

Knighton picks Patriots over Redskins
Posted by Zac Jackson on March 31, 2016, 6:21 PM EDT Terrance Knighton AP Veteran defensive tackle Terrance Knighton has informed the Patriots he will sign with them, ESPN’s Dianna Marie Russini reported Thursday.
The Patriots had Knighton in for a visit earlier this week, shortly after finding out that Nick Fairley would be signing with the Saints. Knighton tweeted Thursday afternoon that he’d made a decision — it was down to staying with the Redskins or joining the Patriots — but wouldn’t reveal it because his focus was on having a baby girl “any minute now.”
Knighton later confirmed via his Twitter account that he’s headed to New England. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Knighton will sign a one-year, $4.5 million contract.
Knighton, 29, was a third-round pick of the Jaguars in 2009. He played four seasons in Jacksonville and two in Denver before signing with the Redskins before last season.
A run-stopper the Redskins listed at 355 pounds last season, Knighton has 14 career sacks.

Patriots hang onto a pair of young defensive backs
Posted by Darin Gantt on April 13, 2016, 9:16 AM EDT FOXBORO, MA - JANUARY 16: Chris Conley #17 of the Kansas City Chiefs loses the ball against Devin McCourty #32 and Justin Coleman #22 of the New England Patriots in the second half during the AFC Divisional Playoff Game at Gillette Stadium on January 16, 2016 in Foxboro, Massachusetts. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images) Getty Images The Patriots continue to fill in the blanks prior to the draft, hanging onto a pair of young players who grew into bigger roles for them last year.
Via Phil Perry of CSNNE.com, the Patriots re-signed exclusive rights free agents Justin Coleman and Brandon King. As ERFAs can’t negotiate with other teams, there isn’t much more than filing paperwork when it comes to such deals.
Coleman became their third cornerback behind Malcolm Butler and Logan Ryan, playing in 11 games and getting extensive action in the playoffs. He was signed off the Seahawks practice squad prior to the home opener, and settled into a nice niche.
King was a contributor on special teams, making the team as an undrafted safety from Auburn.

LeGarrette Blount returns to Patriots
Posted by Mike Florio on April 12, 2016, 12:07 PM EDT Blount Getty Images The Patriots have added plenty of bodies at their pass-catching positions this offseason. They’ve finally brought back one of their key ball carriers.
Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reports that the Patriots have re-signed running back LeGarrette Blount to a one-year deal.
A hip injury ended the fifth-year veteran’s 2015 season in December, after gaining 703 yards in 12 games with six starts. He has been a free agent since March 9, but his name had barely come up in free agency discussions.
Blount spent three years with the Buccaneers (2010-12) and one with the Patriots. He signed with the Steelers in 2014, was cut in November, cleared waivers, and returned to the Patriots to assist in the push that resulted in a Super Bowl win.
He gives the team a between-the-tackles presence for those occasions when the offense opts not to throw the ball. With a glut of receivers and tight ends on the roster, the Patriots could be throwing the ball more than ever in 2016.

Rumor has it the Patriots will be using one of those late late compensatory picks on the fan who tried to file a law suit over the lost first round pick. He was timed in the 40 going up the court house steps in 9.54 carrying two six packs of Sammy Adams and a fenway Frank stuffed in his mouth.

Patriots release former first-rounder Dominique Easley
Posted by Darin Gantt on April 13, 2016, 3:45 PM EDT Chicago Bears v New England Patriots Getty Images The Patriots aren’t afraid to make big moves up front, getting rid of their second former first-rounder of the offseason.
According to Tom Curran of CSNNE.com, the Patriots have released defensive tackle Dominique Easley, a surprising move for a team that also traded away pass-rusher Chandler Jones earlier this offseason.
Easley was always a medical concern, but reportedly didn’t need surgery for the quad injury which ended last season. He finished both his years with the Patriots on IR.
The Patriots brought free agents Terrance Knighton and Chris Long, but the makeover seems far from over. When well, Easley was a solid player, but they apparently didn’t think he was going to be well for long after playing 22 games in two seasons.
