Patriots awarded four compensatory picks The Patriots were awarded four compensatory draft picks for this year's draft based on their net free agent take in 2015. New England had a third-round selection (96) and three sixth-rounders (208, 214 and 221) added. Compensatory picks can not be traded. The Patriots were "credited" with losing Akeem Ayers, Brandon Browner, Jonathan Casillas, Darrelle Revis, Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and Vince Wilfork last year. The only signing they made that registered in the compensatory pick formula was Jabaal Sheard. www.csnne.com/new-england-patriots/patriots-awarded-four-compensatory-nfl-draft-picks

Patriots add defensive line depth with Kearse The Patriots defensive line was already one of their deepest position groups, but it appears they have added a player on Friday that will provide even another layer of depth. Free-agent defensive lineman Frank Kearse posted a picture of the Patriots logo on his Instagram account with the caption "New Beginnings #Notarize." Kearse was reportedly one of a handful of players who visited the Patriots facilities on Thursday. The 6-foot-5, 311-pounder bounced on and off of Washington's active roster last season, seeing action in four regular-season games. A former seventh-round pick of the Dolphins in 2011, Kearse has spent time on the practice squads or active rosters of several different teams including the Panthers, Titans and Cowboys. His last two seasons have been spent in DC, where he picked up four total sacks. Kearse's best professional season came in 2014, when he played in 15 games, made 14 tackles and recorded three sacks. The Patriots depth chart on the defensive line now includes Kearse, Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich, Jabaal Sheard, Geneo Grissom, Trey Flowers, Malcom Brown, Alan Branch, Chris Jones, Joe Vellano and Ishmaa'ily Kitchen. www.csnne.com/new-england-patriots/dl-kearse-announces-new-beginnings-patriots

Bills won’t match Patriots offer to wide receiver Chris Hogan
Posted by Darin Gantt on March 11, 2016, 3:15 PM EST ORCHARD PARK, NY - NOVEMBER 09: Chris Hogan #15 of the Buffalo Bills reacts after missing a catch in the endzone during the second half against the Kansas City Chiefs at Ralph Wilson Stadium on November 9, 2014 in Orchard Park, New York. (Photo by Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images) Getty Images The Bills had five days to decide whether to match New England’s offer sheet on wide receiver Chris Hogan.
They barely needed five minutes.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Bills won’t be using their right of first refusal, meaning the Patriots have themselves a new wide receiver.
Actually, Hogan is more than just a wide receiver. He’s a former lacrosse playing, New Jersey-living, left-footed punting bundle of grit, who seemed destined to play for the Patriots the moment the Dolphins cut him in 2012.
He will almost certainly go on to many Pro Bowls.
The Patriots gave him a three-year, $12 million contract which was heavily front-loaded, taking advantage of the Bills’ tight salary cap situation.

Nate Washington visits with Patriots
Posted by Josh Alper on March 14, 2016, 5:58 PM EDT NASHVILLE, TN - DECEMBER 27: Nate Washington #85 of the Houston Texans celebrates after scoring a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans at LP Field on December 27, 2015 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images) Getty Images The Patriots signed Chris Hogan last week, giving them another receiver who has made his living out of the slot during his NFL career.
On Monday, they met with a wideout who has done most of his work on the outside of the formation. According to multiple reports, Nate Washington was in New England to meet with the team.
Washington played for the Texans last season and caught 47 passes for 658 yards and four touchdowns for the AFC South champs. He spent the previous six seasons with the Titans, where he was also a starter and generally produced at a similar rate that he did in 2015. The biggest exception was in 2011 when Washington set career highs with 74 catches, 1,023 yards and seven touchdowns.
The Patriots added a receiver from Houston last season when they traded for Keshawn Martin. Doing so this year with Washington would bring a different look to a receiving corps that could stand a little more variety.

Report: Patriots trade Jones to Cardinals for Cooper, second-rounder
The Patriots have traded Chandler Jones to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a second-round pick and guard Jonathan Cooper, according to ESPN.
Jones was going into the final year of his rookie contract with the Patriots and was scheduled to make $7.799 million.
Cooper is a former first-round pick, going No. 7 overall to Arizona in 2013.
More to come...

Patriots trade Chandler Jones to Cardinals
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 15, 2016, 2:57 PM EDT Rob Ninkovich, Chandler Jones AP In the most surprising trade of the year so far, Chandler Jones is heading from New England to Arizona.
Jones has been traded from the Patriots to the Cardinals in exchange for guard Jonathan Cooper and a second-round draft pick, Adam Schefter and Dianna Russini of ESPN report.
The Cardinals believed heading into the offseason that their biggest need was a pass rusher, and now they have a very good one. This is the kind of trade that could put the Cardinals over the top and make them Super Bowl favorites.
But there are also risks: Jones is heading into the final year of his contract in 2016, and it’s possible that Jones will leave Arizona in free agency a year from now. The potential of Jones leaving in free agency is surely part of the Patriots’ calculation in making this trade.
Cooper was considered one of the best guard prospects ever when the Cardinals took him with the seventh overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft, but he’s struggled with injuries and generally been a disappointment. The Patriots must still think he has a lot of potential — perhaps more potential in the future than Jones, even though on first blush it would appear that the Cardinals got the better player in this deal.

love this! hearing he's kind of a pain in the ass/bad locker room type but the price is right. Basically the $$$ they saved by trading Jones. Sounds like they also gave up a 4th round pick for a 6th from the bears... Huge help in the run game as a blocker too

Report: Patriots Signing Linebacker Shea McClellin To Three-Year Contract by Doug Kyed on Wed, Mar 16, 2016 at 10:15PM The transactions are coming fast and furious for the New England Patriots. The Patriots are signing linebacker Shea McClellin to a three-year contract, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Wednesday night. McClellin was a pass rusher in college but converted to stand-up linebacker in the NFL with the Chicago Bears. The Patriots have a greater need at linebacker, where they have no clear third option behind starters Dont’a Hightower and Jamie Collins. The Patriots ask their linebackers to blitz frequently, however, so McClellin likely will be allowed to play to his strengths. McClellin, 26, was selected 19th overall in the 2012 NFL Draft out of Boise State. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound defender has 161 career tackles and 7.5 sacks in four seasons, all with the Bears. The Patriots have been active the last two days, when they’ve traded Chandler Jones to the Arizona Cardinals for guard Jonthan Cooper and a second-round draft pick, signed defensive end Chris Long, and reportedly added running back Donald Brown, traded for tight end Martellus Bennett and now added McClellin. Another brilliant acquisition of Martellus Bennet yesterday.
Always loved this guy. Been wanting to see him in New England for years. Perfect complement to Gronk... great fit.

Gronk gets 75% of the throws to NE TEs. He's an improvement over Scott Chandler, but if he can't run block and pass protect (which are the primary jobs of the non-featured TE) then he won't be much of an improvement.
I think before you prematurely ejaculated over acquiring Bennett you should probably be asking yourself why the Bears were so eager to dump him off on the first taker.
The mayor of touchdown city found the end zone three whole times last year. Three times! And his career high is 6! Woohoo! "Look, honey, it's The Mayor of Touchdown City! Another dumbass Democrat!"

Michael is OK in the clubhouse but it seems like every time he gets a QB sack he wants another raise.

Seems like the deal works for both teams. He had run is welcome out in Chicago, and NE gave up very little to give him a shot in NE.

Sad news - Reports are now coming out that Danny Amendola might be the odd man out here with the signing of Chris Hogan. profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/03/16/amendola-could-indeed-be-out-in-new-england/With receiver Chris Hogan and tight end Martellus Bennett joining the corps of pass-catchers in New England, one of the guys already on the roster could be in danger of becoming a former Patriot. A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that it’s indeed possible receiver Danny Amendola could be gone. He’d likely first be squeezed to take less, and perhaps he’d choose to do so. The other alternative is to hold firm with a base salary of $5 million and per-game roster bonuses that add up to another $437,000, forcing the team to either trade Amendola or to cut him. Amendola has spent three seasons in New England. The 2015 campaign was his best yet, thanks to the extended absence of receiver Julian Edelman, who broke a bone in his foot during a November win over the Giants. Amendola finished with 65 catches for 648 yards and three touchdowns. It’s believed that Amendola would find interest elsewhere if the Patriots move on from the 30-year-old veteran who entered the league as an undrafted rookie out of Texas Tech and caught 85 passes in 2010, his second season with the Rams.

Bennett was unhappy with his targets at the midway point of last season, but at the time he was among the top five targeted tight ends in the NFL and was on pace to get as many balls thrown his way as he did the year before. Coach John Fox had little reaction when asked about Bennett's practice field disruption in November.
The previous coaching staff was frustrated with Bennett's habit of loafing in practice, and he was suspended and fined for throwing down cornerback Kyle Fuller during a 2014 training camp altercation.

very good all around TE.....But bitched and moaned when Zack Miller was getting redzone targets...after he got 3 TDs in 2 games.... Bennett pouted, bitched to the media and was disruptive in practice(as opposed to not practicing hard, which is his usual problem) Then the next game he blew his assignment on the 2 pt conversion to send the game against Denver to OT...
Then sat out the final 4 games because of 'sore ribs,' but everyone assumes he was just being a pouty bitch, or Fox just said fuck you, we are better when you are not here.
He got off on the wrong foot with Fox when he refused to come to any of the off season workouts (new coaching staff, new offense.)
It was pretty well known that they were just going to cut him, that is why nobody would give up anything for him. Shocked they got anything.
He will TRY to be a good citizen for one year to get a new contract. As long as he gets as many targets as Gronk, it should all go smoothly.

Little different make-up in the Pats dressing room than the Bearsno doubt.....what he was used to in the Trestman trainwreck/circus era..that staff wouldn't say boo to any player.....but the Fox lockerroom is far more professional and Bennett couldn't (or didn't) adjust. I imagine the Pats lockerroom would be similar. MAYBE he learned his lesson and will be less of a me guy. Or maybe he stays the same and the shit that wouldn't fly in the bears room last year would certainly not fly in the Pats room either.
My guess is that he will try to be a good soldier to get that next contract, and the Pats will get a good deal out of this. But I feel sorry for the next team that actually pays him. Because then it will be all about the Black Unicorn.

Traded away Chandler Jones to get Jonathan Cooper and a 2nd-round pick, and then you go sign Chris Long.... This might be the greatest double move this entire offseason.
