27. Baltimore Orioles Grade: C-
This is mostly about the Chris Davis deal; the rest of their off-season is okay-ish, at least as long as they also get a bargain on Dexter Fowler to offset the decision to give up their first round pick for Yovani Gallardo. But the Davis contract just seems like a huge mistake, especially given what the market was interested in paying for a first baseman with a ton of red flags. Hitters fared remarkably poorly in free agency this winter, with almost of the money going to pitching, but the Orioles still managed to bid against themselves anyway, rather than taking advantage of a soft market for offense and loading up on multiple players at discounted rates who could have provided more value overall.
The Orioles are good enough to at least think about contending in 2016, so the Davis contract could work if he plays well and the team makes a run in the short-term, but the long-term costs are probably going to be quite high, and they probably would have been better off letting Davis walk.

Source: Questions have come up with Yovani Gallardo's physical with Baltimore. Status of deal is unclear. O's notorious medical sticklers.

Fowler to the Orioles 3 years 32 Mil. Pretty much the same package they wanted to give Gallardo, before red flags started popping up in his medicals. Still, I could see good fits for both of them there. The only fit question would be which OF spot Fowler is given to play.

Not out of any preference, but much more due to the fact that the now 3rd O's OF guy will be Reimold, and due to the fact that he has played more left than right in his career.
This would also push Trumbo to the main D.H spot, which is good, as he is brutal in the field.

RF Fowler 3B Machado 1B Davis CF Jones C Wieters DH Trumbo 2B Schoop SS Hardy LF Kim Bench C Joesph IF Flaherty OF Rickard i like that it ties the lineup together. Orioles feel like they have a full competent lineup, great overall defense and solid back end Bullpen. Now..as for the SP.. BLECH

have to give the O's credit. I came into this off-season thinking it was gonna be ugly with how many holes they had. They went out and got back Davis. Wieters took the QO. Plucked Rickard for rule 5, took a chance on this Kim guy. Got Trumbo for peanuts.. then tie it off with Fowler.
Never expected them to spend soo much.
Don't really like Gallado one bit, He's objectively a downgrade from losing Chen. So the Rotation is even more suspect. Hoping Gausman can really come into his own..

I'll stick with SP as the thing to fix..

Well, it took a few extra days, but it looks like Gallardo with be with the O's this year after all.
MASN's Roch Kubatko reports that the Orioles and Yovani Gallardo have reached agreement on a restructured two-year contract with a team option.
The Baltimore Sun's Eduardo Encina hears that the two guaranteed years will be worth $20 million with a $2 million buyout. Should the team exercise the third-year option, that would be worth $13 million. Gallardo and the Orioles had reportedly reached an agreement on a three-year, $35 million contract as of Monday, but FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported Wednesday morning that the O's were scared of Gallardo's shoulder after a physical and wanted to restructure the deal. Assuming the contract's going to stand this time, the Orioles will lose the 14th pick in this summer's amateur draft.
