He's an odd guy so who knows but I think he'll play next year. Probably just not for Seattle.

even his mama ain't know
Marshawn’s mom doesn’t know what he’s going to do
Posted by Mike Florio on January 24, 2016, 10:16 AM EST Zz03NjExYTM0MjRjOTI3YTM4N2QxZTM2MWQ0Zjc1NTFlMg== Getty Images On Friday, Seahawks G.M. John Schneider said he believes running back Marshawn Lynch is leaning toward retirement. Marshawn has remained characteristically silent on the issue. His mother hasn’t.
Delisa Lynch told both KING 5 and Twitter that she doesn’t know what Marshawn is going to do, refuting a report from TMZ that Delisa Lynch said she believes Marshawn will play.
Still not 30, Marshawn has mused about retirement for a couple of years. On past occasions, the Seahawks tried to persuade him to return, with a sweetening of the pot helping to get it done. This year, the Seahawks presumably want to unsweeten the pot, dumping his $11.5 million cap number and avoiding a $9 million base

Probably just not for Seattle. he's just a giant question mark. but he has to play next year, right? if he doesn't, it's because Seattle cut him and he's still going to get paid. why would he give up the 2nd year of the contract, and have to pay Seattle $5 million? I think he plays next year and it's just a story to make a story. after next year, I don't know. he probably won't. I don't see any fathomable reason why he would want to give up money AND have to pay back money

Lynch is a weird duck, I can see him retiing and just walking away from the money still owed. He already could have millions in the bank if he saved his money, what's a few more???

Marshawn Lynch will turn 30 before next season and he has over 2000 carries in his career already in his 9-year career. He missed more than half the season this year, which he played the least amount of games this year. Maybe he thinks he's feeling the effects of the gridiron?
Personally, I'd like for him to return and give it another go. I think the Seahawks still have a team assembled to make it to the Super Bowl, so I don't see Lynch walking away from the money guaranteed, let alone an opportunity at a second Super Bowl ring.
But you never know! Didn't 49ers linebacker Chris Borland retire from the league after being a 3rd-round selection, and Patrick Willis already announcing he was gone? You never know with players nowadays, especially with the information made known about concussions, which seems to be startling some NFL players.

There is also the Steelers starting OLB that got francised and made $10 mil in 2014 and then retired before the 2015 season citing future health concerns. So, Lynch could just walk away after the health problems he had in 2015.

didn't the 49ers have that 1 high-pick running back who left after like a year to become a pastor?
and in that Steelers' starting OLB situation, I would've told the team that I was going to retire after the year and keep the team informed of my decisions. it'd be too hard for me to pass up the money

I expect the Hawks will release him so he will get to keep the signing bonus Unless someone wants to pay him big money I say he'll retire

I don't know why he passed up on a bunch of money though, he was projected to be a big-time contributor on the 49ers' offense

Seabags have a lot of money issues to address to keep their salary cap management in line. I think the Beast is one of them. He's gone.
The question at that point - does he play at a reduced rate somewhere else to chase another ring. With him... I just don't know. He doesn't seem to be wound that way.

Agree I expect them to trade down often this draft procuring multiple extra picks to use in the back end of their roster. Also expect Avril Irvin and Kearse to move on. Lynch will be a post June 1st cut as there will be only 2.5 M in dead money and a 9 M cap savings as opposed to 5M dead and 6.5 cap savings pre June 1st Avril has a post June 1st 0.5 M dead money and cap saving of 6 M. I figure they hope Clark can help fill Avril's spot. Irvin and Kearse are on expired contracts. The only other cut I can see that would help cap wise yet not effect the team that adversely is Hauschka who had 0.848M dead money and a 2.7M cap save Bennett and Chancellor both want their contracts renegotiated so that has to be factored into their cap management and replacements must be obtained at the draft should the negotiations become acrimonious

In either event, the league salary cap is nonsensical.
Why does a team have to take any kind of hit on its cap for retired players?
Is it because they restructure contracts to push the money back? If that is so, then I get it. Otherwise...no

I would not be surprised to find out Steve Young is still getting paid by the 49ers, and he would not be alone. JJ and the boys would have a field day if you let them pay out big contracts and not have them count against the cap. Look, all you would have to do is give a big time player backloaded contract money, a year or two or three he is done , gets his money and the team is not charged really. These guys game the system enough as it is. It would be a mess without a cap, it was before they put in that cap. Debatolo was not the only one.

The cheaters screw everything up - Still can't believe that after the Cowboys and DC got fined for going over the cap in the "uncapped season" The PA didn't file collusion charges. Dead money is money given upfront that is higher than the average of the salary per season. For instance a player siigns a 4 year contract for 60M and receives a 10M signing bonus and receives 15M first season 7M second and 16M seasons 3 and 2M season 4 His average is 15M so if they cut him after season 1 there would be 10M in dead money and 5M in cap savings as he received 25 but his average is 15. After year 2 he would have a dead monet hit of 2M and a cap savings of 13M If this player is not a core player he probably gets released here

The Steelers are one of the worst practitioners of this way of thinking as they are so close to the cap they are constantly renegotiating contracts problem is when the player refuses and they are forced by the cap restraints to release a player (or 2) to be compliant they end up with a shitload of dead money space. The Raiders and Panthers were also teams in cap hell but those teams bit the bullet and ate it right away difference between the 2 teams is the Panthers actually had football players on their roster at the time

They were so inept that they had three super high draft picks all come up practically together (Calvin, Stafford and Suh) at a time before the new rookie scale got put into place. They are s-o-o screwed now. Suh is gone and Calvin is following but the cap hits continue to have them hamstrung. Good luck with this mess Bob Quinn.

It is about guaranteed money in the end. Players and their agents know that when they sign. Still, if you let the owners have even a tiny loophole they will turn it into a black hole. Look, you remember when the Redskins signed Fat Albert to a hundred million dollar contract with forty million guaranteed one minute after midnight the day he legally became a free agent? That tells you all you need to know, the deals are made before FA ever starts and retirement deals and bargains added would be the same....

Every successful team deals with it, and some not so succussful teams do. the system works and there is no system to help the stupid. a league made for mediocrity and changing guards and it sells like hotty cakes.

he can be not that passionate about football, that's fine. but I'm sure he's passionate about money so I'm not sure why he would want to pass that up or have to give up some money. Apparently not as he had to give back some of his signing bonus. And do you really think people join the Army Rangers cause of the money they make. I'm pretty sure they're not going to throw away a whole bunch of money they could earn and then have to give back money they already earned on top of that
