Lots of chirping by fans and media down here around Kellen Moore and "Garrett needs to start him". I disagree. Here's why.
1988... Cowboys were well into the mercifully short Steve Pelleur era. At the time, the backup was young Kevin Sweeney. For those who may have forgotten - he was the darling of the locals after he led the Cowboys to two wins during the "replacement players" games in 1987. Danny White came back for the third game during the strike which the Redskins won on MNF... and during which fans booed and chanted "We Want Sweeney".
Fast forward to 1988. Landry's last season. Won two games and were mired in last place of what would end up being a 3-13 season. Once again - the "We Want Sweeney" chants were in Texas Stadium... and in all the newspapers... and on TV. For the only time I ever recall as a Cowboys fan, Landry actually relented and chose to start Sweeney.
On Thanksgiving.
Against the Queens.
43-3
Landry's comments after the game - "Well, I think we're finished with that".
My message to Cowboys fans - be careful. It can always be worse.

I see your point but if I were a fan I'd probably want to see what Moore can do. I already know what Cassel is. You're really only looking for a back up for Romo next year, have to believe Moore would much cheaper than Cassel.

If (when) they lose to the Jets, then I'm all in. I just get the sense Garrett sees him in practice and thinks "Good lord - we're screwed".

It could get worse although that is hard to imagine. On the side of the glass being half full, it has likely nowhere to go but up. And if it doesn't, at least you have eliminated that option.

The Cowboys are sticking with Matt Cassel — for now. But they’re at least thinking about a change. According to Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star Telegram, they’ve given some first team reps in practice this week to backup Kellen Moore, who has never thrown a pass in an NFL game. Coach Jason Garrett described the amount as “a couple,” but said most of his work remains with the scout team. Moore is kind of a pet project of offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, from their two years together in Detroit. The former Boise State quarterback is in his fourth year, but hasn’t played yet. “There’s no bigger believer in Kellen Moore than myself,” Linehan said. “There’s probably a few guys back in Boise and some guys back in Detroit, but I believe in him. But in the same breath, I think our rallying cry is that it’s not just the quarterback position even though the quarterback position has to play better. We made the decision this week that we’ve all got to do better for the quarterback position. If we do that we’ll be able to get this thing turned around and move forward. But we’ve got all the confidence in those guys, whoever we have in the game, to do the job.” Of course, they could also make a change at some point because Cassel has been kind of bad, and it won’t matter much longer, as they have just the slimmest mathematical chance of making the playoffs. But it seems as long as that chance exists, they’re going to ride with the veteran. The Cowboys also have some pragmatic concerns, as Cassel has incentives built into his contract which could pay him more for certain levels of participation. So if they’re eliminated, giving Moore some looks can be an experiment for the future, and create savings in the present as well. profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/12/18/cowboys-give-kellen-moore-some-first-team-reps-in-practice/

I still get the feeling Garrett watches Moore in practice and thinks to himself "Thank God I have that 5 year deal in my hip pocket"...

I was in that "Start Kellen Moore" boat, and here's why: After Tony Romo went down, Brandon Weeden was pathetic, so he was benched by Matt Cassel, who just was on the team a few weeks after a trade... Cassel couldn't quite pick up the offense easily, and as a veteran QB, he too couldn't give the offense a spark. I thought Cassel was an improvement from Weeden, who wouldn't take chances, but the chances Cassel took were interceptions that cost us badly. At the point to where we're done after Thanksgiving, when Romo's done for the year after re-injuring his collarbone, I liked the Kellen Moore idea even more. We saw what we had in Matt Cassel, so let's give Kellen Moore a shot! Kellen Moore was the most knowledgeable in Scott Linehan's system from their time together in Detroit, I've been a Moore fan since his Boise State days, and Moore seems to know how to win. I thought even if he hurt our draft position, we should see what the young Kellen Moore has and if he can be a starter in the NFL. Who knew, right?! So at the point in early December, there was no reason not to give Kellen Moore his opportunity, one he's been waiting years for in the NFL. We weren't making the playoffs, and even if we did, we would've gotten killed in wild card weekend. So I was fine and supportive of when they said Kellen Moore would play in the games, because you have to know if he had the potential to be your backup for Romo, and possibly his successor! Now we know we're better off drafting a quarterback on Day 2 or 3 of the draft, and we found out by having no harm on our part.

And - I don't mind keeping him around for a couple of years. He didn't embarrass himself out there with his opportunities. It's not like he can play defense or something equally as important to the downfall of a 4-12 team in 2015.
Plus - he can be the #2 guy while the guy we draft on Day 2 or 3 learns how to play QB in the NFL.

At least you like the idea of not wasting a 1st rounder on a backup, so that's good... and you don't want Johnny Manziel. LOL There's a site; bringjohnny2dallas.com --- I signed the petition. And oh, I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Manziels Turrible, nice to meet you Mr. Driftwood.

And no - unless the guy is "Can't Miss" - I am not one of those "gotta take a QB in the first round" peoples. It isn't like we don't have other needs... like a D-lineman or Linebacker who can stay on the field.

Mark my words: I'd be happy giving it one more shot this year, and then tanking for Josh Rosen, the quarterback from UCLA. Rosen is going to be THAT good!!
