This will be long… probably a little wordy. Sometimes though – you just get a gut full of “it” and the time to vent arrives. And – as a member of this little neighborhood Sports Chatter where I have earned the right to speak my piece when it is deemed appropriate – this is the time.
First – an advisory. I do not like Greg Hardy. Don’t like him one damn bit. Everything I have read about him leads me to the conclusion that he is one seriously repugnant human being. And I don’t care how good of a football player he is (and make no mistake – he is one seriously talented football player). He’s an absolute piece of shit who shouldn’t be allowed on a football field until he gets some level of understanding around the fact that what he did to that woman was wrong.
Fucking wrong.
Period.
But – the Commissioner tried to suspend him 10 games… the NFLPA defended him… an arbitrator reduced it to 4 games… it is what it is… if some team wanted to sign him they had the right.
Which leads me to Jerry Jones.
Jerry is a damn good business man. I give him all the credit in the world for that. Anyone with an understanding of where the Cowboys were when he purchased them knows they were bleeding money when he bought them. He not only eliminated the debt – he turned the Cowboys into a money-making machine that is the most valuable sports franchise in the world. The WORLD. One may agree or not agree with how he went about the business of making that happen. But, as a manager I respect immensely told me once during an interview when the topic of Jerry came up – it’s his business. He runs it as he sees fit. Whether he is a “football man” or not is up for another debate (I personally don’t think so but that’s one man’s opinion) but you cannot argue that turning a franchise that was losing money into one worth $4 Billion bears witness to what he can do on the business side of the house.
Jerry is also an attention whore. And that’s where I really have a problem with how everyone is handling this Hardy thing. The crickets in the media… the talking heads… the advocacy groups… fans… every single person who raises hell about Hardy being on this team forgets one simple little thing about Jerry. He is an attention whore who absolutely eats every bit of this up. He does so for one simple reason – because people are talking about the Cowboys. He does not believe whatsoever that bad publicity matters. It only matters that you speak about the Cowboys. It’s been proven over and over then only thing Jerry fears (primarily because he has said it on a number of occasions) is apathy when it comes to his business. Love them or hate them – just care.
People always talk about hitting Jerry (or – any sports franchise as the Donald Sterling imbroglio showed) in the pocketbook when it comes to retaliation. If you really want to get to him – ignore him. Don’t buy Cowboys branding. Don’t buy tickets. Those are the standard responses. But – if sponsors walk away… if the local media walks away… if the national media walks away… if the advocacy groups turn their heads… if Fox made the Cowboys their 12:00 Noon games and only broadcast them to about 10% of the national audience… I promise – Jerry would lose his mind. Then and only then would he change how he does business.
Ignore him, people. Just ignore him.
