oh the humanity!
Cyber bullying is about to be taken to a whole new level thanks to the creators of “Peeple”. Peeple, described as a “positivity” app, will allow you to rate the people in your life. And anyone can be rated. As long as someone knows your personal cell phone number, they can rate you. And there’s nothing you can do about it.
With all the anti-cyber bullying campaigns out there, you’d think that an app like this would be illegal. But when it comes down to it, cigarettes are still sold despite anti-smoking PSA’s taking over television.
According to the Washington Post, Peeple could launch as soon as next month, and when it does, you will be able to assign reviews and one to five-star ratings to everyone you know. Think about all the bitter exes in the world. All the disgruntled ex-employees. All the “mean girls” (and guys) in the world. Anyone can post about anyone, and once a review is written about you, there’s nothing you can do about it. Nothing can be deleted.
One of the app’s founders, Julia Cordray, is trying to spin the app as “positive”, claiming that there’s no reason for people to not want to “showcase your character”. Another one of the founders is claiming that she wanted an app that would help her decide whom to trust her kids with.
Sorry girls, we’re not buying it.
Thankfully, there will be some rules for using the app. In order to “review” someone, you must be over 21, have an established Facebook account, and you must make reviews under your real name.
Quick question — how will Peeple know if your Facebook account is actually you? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
Something else you will need in order to rate the humans in your life — their cell phone number. And you’ll have to categorize whether your relationship is personal, professional, or romantic. So basically, you can rate anyone you’ve ever met.
