WASHINGTON – The Reds are in a new city, but Joey Votto is not. Just as he has been since Thursday, Votto's in Cincinnati while his team is on the road, and no decision has been made on his status. The Reds start their series with Nationals with 25 men on their roster, but just 24 players available. "We haven't made a decision. We've still got some really good, positive stuff coming out from his rehab and he's gotten a lot of the soreness out of his knee," Reds manager Bryan Price said before Monday's game. "He's working diligently on his strengthening. We're not yet ready, or do we feel it necessary to make a decision right now. It's really a day-to-day, pending situation." If Votto goes on the disabled list, it would be retroactive to May 16. That would make him eligible to return May 31, meaning he'd miss not only this series with the Nationals and the upcoming series with the Cardinals, but also three games at the Dodgers and the first two games against the Diamondbacks in Arizona. Until a decision is made, the Reds are a man short on their bench. "That is also day-to-day, because you're also able to define your needs – as long as we stay healthy, we feel we have some coverage," Price said. "Certainly, we'd like to have a full bench, a full arsenal, but at this point in time we don't feel it's necessary to make that decision, but there could be a point where we have to make a tough decision." MESORACO TO CLEANUP: When the Reds drafted Devin Mesoraco in 2007, they could envision him being the type of player who could not only catch, but also bat fourth in the order. For the first time in his career, Devin Mesoraco started as the team's cleanup hitter on Monday. Mesoraco entered the game hitting .500 on the season and was 5 for 7 with two doubles and a homer in two games since coming off the DL. He's hit safely in 14 of his 15 games this season and has eight multi-hit games. "He's our hottest guy. He's doing a lot of damage, extra-base damage," Price said. "He's squaring the ball up. These aren't base hits that he's just feathering in front of an outfielder, he's driving the ball. He's hitting the ball hard. We've got to take advantage of the hottest bat on our club right now. I think it's a perfect spot in the order for him right now." GOLD GLOVES: Even Monday – three days after it happened – Billy Hamilton's first career error stuck in his craw. "I hated that I got it. I was mad at myself. People asked why I was mad – we'd just won the game," Hamilton said. "But it was that error. It was a crazy error. I just take so much pride in my defense. Especially coming from the infield, I made a lot of errors – in the infield I made a lot, I'm talking a lot. I'm trying not to get any (in the outfield)." Hamilton made the error with two outs in the ninth inning of Friday's 3-0 victory over the Phillies. And it didn't factor into the game, allowing Cody Asche to advance from first to second after his single, but it broke the Reds' streak of 10 games without an error. Heading into Monday, the Reds had the highest fielding percentage (.992) and fewest errors (13) in the majors. Their 13 errors through 40 games was the fourth-fewest by a major league team since 1914, according to Elias Sports Bureau. The 2010 Twins had just nine. The Reds didn't make an error in either of their next two games after the streak ended, and Hamilton is determined not to have another all season. "It was the worst feeling ever," Hamilton said. "I've got to keep it down to the limit. I have one, I don't want any more." www.prosportsdaily.com/Headlines/ExternalArticle?articleId=305473

Chapman has developed a nasty changeup,(90mph) and he's all of a sudden throwing his slider over with a decent rate of consistency. Combine that with the fact that he's throwing 100-103 consistently? Filthy.
He threw 85% fastballs the last 2 seasons, and didn't throw a changeup even once. Now he's down to 69% fastballs in this small sample size, but it shows me that he's become more confident throwing his other stuff.
If this continues, it might be time to extend Chapman now at a closer's contract, and put him in the rotation for 2015. And I've never wanted him in the rotation before.

How bad are things for the Reds?
They have Todd Frazier hitting 2nd for them today. Maybe they are tiring of the lack of production from Brandon Phillips.
I know I am.....

Reds lineup is pathetic.
As soon as it looks like something, they turn back into nothing.

The Reds were hoping that Wednesday's minor league rehab start would be the final hurdle before Mat Latos would finally be able to make his season debut, but they might have to wait a little bit longer for him to join the rotation.
Latos was forced to leave his latest rehab start with Triple-A Louisville after five innings and 67 pitches because of a calf cramp. The goal going in was for him to get stretched out to 90 or 100 pitches, so his status is in limbo at the moment. The Reds will see how he bounces back before making a final decision, but it's possible they'll have him make another rehab start to be on the safe side.
Latos began the season on the disabled list following surgery in February to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. The original plan called for him to join the Reds' rotation in mid-April, but his return has been delayed due to a flexor mass strain in his right forearm.

So Cueto's ERA is now up to 1.97 and he now sits at 5-5. Clearly he doesn't know how to win and needs some pointers on pitching to the scoreboard. Maybe Jack Morris can help him out.

He may actually be partial to blame for lack for run support after a fashion. Bryan Pena is his personal Catcher it seems. So that means Mesoraco sits at gets his day of rest. Who is the Reds best hitters right now... I think he caught Cueto once in April and that was it.

JD Whats Mesorasco back in a platoon with this Pena Penis? No, but Mesoraco has been ice cold lately. Price has been insisting that Pena catch Cueto too...or maybe it's Cueto insisting. I don't know.

Haren is probably the worst starter they'll see in this series though, so it makes sense as long as Mesoraco catches Cueto Wednesday.

There's the innings concern with Simon. He's already pitched 74 after 87 last year and 61 the year before that. Plus they want that lefty in the rotation. Simon may stay for a bit, but Cingrani, if he goes to the pen at all, will be back in the rotation sooner rather than later.

Frazier's homer in 9th lifts Reds over Pirates 6-5By JOHN PERROTTO (Associated Press) 6 hours ago AP - Sports PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Ahead in the count 2-0 with the game tied in the ninth inning, Todd Frazier figured there was only one type of pitch he was going to see. ''I know he didn't want to walk me and put a guy on base,'' Frazier said. ''I was looking to get a fastball I could handle and, fortunately, I was able to connect.'' Frazier's leadoff homer lifted Cincinnati to a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night after the Reds' bullpen blew a three-run lead. Frazier's team-leading 16th home run to center field came off closer Jason Grilli (0-2) and gave the Reds their fifth win in six games. Cincinnati (34-35) also got within one game of .500 on its ninth try. ''You can't fall behind the first guy you face, especially in a tie ballgame,'' Grilli said. ''He dives over the plate. ... It just didn't work out.'' Frazier leads NL third basemen in homers, extra-base hits (31) and slugging percentage (.524). ''He's very confident now that he can be a major league player,'' Cincinnati manager Bryan Price said of Frazier, who is in his fourth season. ''He's been able to put home runs, RBIs, run production into one package.'' Billy Hamilton had three hits and two stolen bases for the Reds, while Joey Votto had two hits and three RBIs. Frazier, Brandon Phillips and Ryan Ludwick added two hits apiece. Hamilton is 8 for 13 in his last three games. Cincinnati is 5-2 and averaging 5.3 runs per game since Votto was activated from the disabled list after missing three weeks with a quadriceps strain. Logan Ondrusek (2-2) got four outs for the win. Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth for his 12th save, getting Clint Barmes to fly out to the left-field fence with two runners on to end the game. ''It was an interesting game in a lot of ways,'' Price said. ''Both teams had their moments and we had to have some good things happen to win the game. It would have been nice if it were a little easier on the stomach.'' Price's stomach was certainly churning when left fielder Chris Heisey, a late-inning defensive replacement for Ludwick, had to race to the fence to catch Barmes' drive. ''It carried farther than I thought,'' Heisey said. ''Fortunately, it stayed in the park.'' Josh Harrison matched a career high with four hits for the Pirates. He drove in two runs. Starling Marte, Ike Davis and Jordy Mercer added two hits apiece. Andrew McCutchen extended his hitting streak to 12 games but came up short of becoming the first Pittsburgh player to have multiple hits in nine straight games since Rennie Stennett in 1971. Gregory Polanco became the first Pirates player to have a hit in each of the first seven games of his career since Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente in 1955. The Pirates used a three-run seventh inning to tie the score at 5 on RBI singles by Davis, Russell Martin and Harrison. Cincinnati starter Johnny Cueto's hard luck continued as he gave up two runs in six innings of a no-decision. Cueto scattered seven hits and four walks, but the bullpen failed to hold a three-run lead for him. Despite a sparkling 1.92 ERA, Cueto is 6-5 through 15 starts. In two starts against the Pirates in April, he allowed one run and six hits in 18 innings. Pittsburgh's Brandon Cumpton gave up three runs and eight hits in six innings after winning his previous two starts. NOTES: Pittsburgh 2B Neil Walker took batting practice and fielded grounders before the game for the first time since undergoing an appendectomy June 9. He is optimistic he will be ready to be activated from the disabled list June 24, the first day he is eligible. ... Pirates LHP Francisco Liriano is scheduled to play catch Thursday for the first time since sustaining a strained left oblique June 10 and going on the DL. ... Phillips' string of 43 consecutive plate appearances without a strikeout, the longest active streak in the majors, ended when he fanned in the seventh. ... Cincinnati RHP Alfredo Simon (9-3, 2.95 ERA) opposes Pirates RHP Edinson Volquez (4-5, 3.89) on Wednesday night. sports.yahoo.com/news/fraziers-homer-9th-lifts-reds-031811542--mlb.html

Simon first in NL to win 12, Reds beat Cubs 4-1Cubs 4-1 By JOE KAY (AP Baseball Writer) 10 hours ago AP - Sports CINCINNATI (AP) -- Alfredo Simon leads the National League in wins. He's still hoping to be added to the All-Star team. Simon became the NL's first 12-game winner and Billy Hamilton added to his sensational series with a tiebreaking triple Wednesday night, sending the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-1 victory over the trade-depleted Chicago Cubs. The Reds won their fifth in a row - matching their season high - and moved a season-best seven games over .500. After winning the first four games of the series, they'll try for their first five-game sweep since 1976 on Thursday. Cincinnati moved within 2 1/2 games of first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central, its smallest deficit since April 7. The Reds were a season-high 8 1/2 out on June 22. Simon (12-3), left off the NL All-Star roster Sunday, became the first Reds pitcher to win a dozen games before the break since Edinson Volquez also went 12-3 in the first half of 2008. The reliever-turner-starter gave up four hits in 6 2-3 innings, including Anthony Rizzo's third homer in four games. If another pitcher has to pull out of the All-Star game next week, Simon would be considered. ''I'm really happy with myself,'' he said. ''I think I have the numbers to be on the All-Star team. I don't know what's going to happen. They told me to stand by.'' Hamilton tripled home a run and scored during a three-run fifth against Dallas Beeler (0-2), who has lost his first two starts in the majors. Cubs manager Rick Renteria was ejected during the inning for arguing a foul ball call with third base umpire Andy Fletcher. Hamilton is 7 for 15 with three triples, three walks, two steals and seven RBIs during the series. On Tuesday night, his ninth-inning single completed the Reds' comeback from a five-run deficit to a 6-5 win and a doubleheader sweep. Hamilton flied out in his last at-bat and left the game because his left hamstring was tight. He expects to miss a few games. ''It's been bothering me for the past couple of days,'' Hamilton said. ''I knew something was happening. On the last at-bat, I stepped down and I felt it pull when I started running.'' Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips also left in the eighth after spraining his left thumb while making a sliding catch. X-rays were negative. He wore a splint on the thumb as he left the clubhouse. It's been a tough week for the Cubs, who have lost all six games - their deepest slump of the season - since they dealt starters Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to Oakland for a package of prospects. Beeler and several others will get a chance to move up from the minors and fill their spots. The 25-year-old pitcher gave up four runs, six hits and four walks in five innings. Simon has been one of the majors' biggest surprises. Moved into the rotation when Mat Latos tore knee cartilage in spring training, the 33-year-old pitcher is having by far the best year of his career, ranking among the league leaders in several categories. The right-hander walked two, matched his season high with eight strikeouts and threw 119 pitches, retiring 13 in a row during one stretch. Aroldis Chapman struck out the side in the ninth for his 19th save in 21 chances. The left-hander has fanned at least one batter in each of his last 38 appearances, leaving him one shy of Bruce Sutter's record for a reliever since 1900. The Cubs called up second baseman Arismendy Alcantara for a couple of days. The 22-year-old infielder batted second and went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. He'll return to Triple-A Iowa when second baseman Darwin Barney returns from paternity leave. NOTES: The Reds' last sweep of a five-game series came against San Diego in 1976. They haven't swept the Cubs in a five-game series since 1931 at Redland Field. ... RHP Kyle Hendricks will make his major league debut on Thursday, facing Cincinnati's Homer Bailey (8-5). The Reds have won 10 of Bailey's last 11 starts against the Cubs. ... It was Renteria's fifth ejection. ... The Cubs optioned LHP Chris Rusin to Iowa to open a roster spot for Beeler. sports.yahoo.com/news/simon-first-nl-win-12-021003547--mlb.html
