Jack Nicklaus famously categorized the Open Championships this way: The Opens in England, the Opens in Scotland and the Opens at St. Andrews.
Well, this year they'll play the Open at the Home of Golf, the Old Course at St. Andrews. 156 golfers will vie to win the Claret Jug. You can find the entire list here: www.theopen.com/Players
Due to the international nature of this event, I propose the following change: Pick two players instead of one with the only rule that the two players you want do not come from the same country. Please also submit a winning score, knowing that St. Andrews plays to a par 72. Even without Rory playing, we should have a great Open.
Some notes and other fun stuff
The last five winners of the Open at St. Andrews (with winning score):
1990 Nick Faldo (270)
1995 John Daly (282)
2000 Tiger Woods (269)
2005 Tiger Woods (274)
2010 Louis Oosthuizen (272)
As of Sunday evening Ladbrokes.com had the following odds for the first 12 players quoted:
Jordan Spieth, 5 to 1
Dustin Johnson, 12 to 1
Rickie Fowler, 16 to 1
Justin Rose, 16 to 1
Adam Scott, 20 to 1
Henrik Stenson, 20 to 1
Louis Oosthuizen, 20 to 1
Tiger Woods, 25 to 1
Martin Kaymer, 25 to 1
Phil Mickelson, 25 to 1
Sergio Garcia, 25 to 1
Jason Day, 25 to 1
The course plays the easiest when the wind doesn't blow, naturally. It plays easier if the wind comes from the northwest (behind the players on holes 8, 9 and 12 through 18) and the hardest when it comes from the east or northeast (from the sea, sideways on almost all the holes). Winds from the southeast make holes 1 through 7, 10 and 11 relatively easy and the rest tougher. It seldom blows from the west or southwest (inland). They've had a wet summer in Scotland, which will help the scoring as players will have the chance to fire at pins instead of rolling the ball on the green as they would have to on a harder, drier course.
Rickie Fowler won the Scottish Open this weekend. Only Phil Mickelson, two years ago, won that tournament before following up with a victory at the Open at Muirfield.
