Ok. This is totally inspired by Macho Row's post, about things that plague his mind. Sorry about that MR.
The thing is, my favorite players are Rickey Henderson and DeMarcus Cousins. They play the games like how I would play those games. Reality is, I'm just a 6'2 205 lbs white dude who sits behind a keyboard everyday. I really need to up my goal on my fitbit every day, because I'm totally in danger of becoming a fat white American.
Rickey played baseball the way I played baseball.
Demarcus plays Basketball the way I want to see it played.
Who plays the sport the way you would play it?

No need to apologize for a shout out. Nice to see my mental instability from working nights may inspire some others. Wish I would have thought of this one.
NHL- Rod Brind'Amour. I'm still heart broken he was traded weeks after getting his jersey as a youth. Loved him in the orange and black. To this day I wish he would reunite with the franchise.
NBA- I hate to admit it because he's such a shit bag of a person, but Allen Iverson. I was too young for the Barkley era. Doc retired before I was out of diapers. A.I. was fun as hell to watch and the only time they've been relevant in the entire time I've been able to follow sports. He gave it all on the court. Everything. Played the game bigger than his actual size and was driven more than anything to win. Again, a shit bag personally but even on the down side he made attending entertaining.
NFL- I'm torn. Gun to my head? Brian Dawkins. No one played the game harder or lived their life in the best manner possible more than him. But there's also other ones like Bobby Taylor. Michael Irving would DESTROY the Eagles on a regular basis until Bobby Taylor came to town and really made the guy look pedestrian.
MLB- This ones the toughest. My favorite sport. Probably Darren Daulton. I played alot of catcher as a youth and he always seemed cooler than the other side of the pillow. If not Dutch then Brett Butler. I started following him When I was around 7 because we both wore #22 and had blue uniforms(I didn't realize he was a Dodger, thought he was a Royal which was the name og my LL team).
This was alot harder to decide on than I had thought origionally it would be. Kudos.

Basketball would be Bobby Hurley....short but played hard every play. Didn't make an impact in NBA due to a MVA but would have been successful...other than him would be Bob Cousy.
NFL...would have to be Walter Payton...class both on and off the field.
MLB would NOT be Chipper Jones. Story down here is that he went on a hunting trip with a guy and some of his friends. One of the friend asked for an autograph and CJ told him it would cost $20K. Cheap bastard. Favorite would be Will Clark and Roy Campanella..
NHL...don't know enough but would pick Bobby Orr since I know where his museum is

I've always been a little jealous of offensive linemen. Probably because I'm a small dude: 5'10 160lbs. I went to college with a kid who was 6'7 350lbs. You know what he majored in? Drama. He wanted to be a professional actor. No one's going to hire a woolly mammoth as an actor. Meanwhile the kid had no interest in sports. All the football players tried to talk him into joining the team and he passed it up. It was a D3 school; he could have walked onto that field any day he wanted. Just a lazy waste of physical girth. So I'd really go one of two ways. I've got a lot of respect for the big guys in the trenches because they show up every day and work their ass off without getting much of the spotlight. There's something I like about that: just playing an important role for the love of the game. But more true to my physical stature, I don't know, maybe more of a Steve Largent kind of role - he's the epitome of a smallish, unimpressive athlete who excels with heart and work ethic. It's impossible for me to not respect a guy like that. Yeah, you're a kicker.

Right now I've got 15 favorite players. The Atlanta Hawks. If you have yet to see this team play you are really missing out on some of the best team basketball I have ever seen. I'm 53.

I've had many players that I like a lot but only two will I call "favorite". Nolan Ryan and Kurt Warner. Not only for performance but for demeanor.

Good topic. I have to really think about it.
Easy ones: NBA: unlike Macho, I DO remember Dr J. I remember sitting behind the basket about 10 rows and watching one of those wheely-arm under-and-around lay ups right in front of us.
MLB: Same era... Cue Harry Kalas- heres the two two pitch. Swing and A LOOOONG DRIIIVEE. DEEP. LEFT. FIELD. THAT BALL'S OUTTA HERE. HOME. RUN. MICHAEL JACK SCHMIDT. And the Phillies have taken the leeeeaaaad.
I'm sure Macho heard it in his head correctly.
NFL: Curt Warner on the old time Seahawks. NHL: can't think of one standout player I've ever cheered for specifically.

It was my first real emotional investment into football and I became a die-hard PSU fan right then and eventually attended the school. I followed his career closely with Seattle.

I heard they have a gay player o the team what's your take on that?!? They really are an interesting team. All the analysts say that an NBA team can not be successful without a superstar, but this team has no superstar. The guy (Horford and Millsap) who leads their team in field goal attempts per game only averages 12.6 shots.
Here's some trivia for you: Who was the last team with a .750+ winning percentage who's leading shooter averaged less than 13 attempts per game? I'm not sure there has ever been one. These guys have the team-play concept down to a science. No glory hogs.

It can be more directly attributed to Gus' people. Long story short, and I will defer to Grue who may be more of an expert seeing as he spent quite a bit more time there than I, but the origional name was the Nittany Mountain Lions, later shortened to Nittany Lions. Named after Nittany Mountain which was named by the native americans and whited up by the euro settlers.

In a way it's like saying the Pocahontas Lions. But the lions refer to the mountain. The mountain refers to the Native woman.

The story I was told that the native americans named it nee-ta-nee or something similar and then it was Anglicized. Either because it was the name of the native who "created" the mountain or had to do something with where it stood as far as shielding the valley from the weather.
I never knew what to believe because there were always so many stories floating around.

I didn't know that, thanks. The only stats I care about though are scores and records. Everything else is academic and keeps people in the sports business employed.

My favorites: Pumpsie Green Peter LaCock Rusty Kuntz Dave Morehead Dick Pole Charlie Furbush Jennie Finch Pumpsie Green got off the bus in New York city after a game one day, went to the airport and tried to get a flight to Israel. He had no passport and was spotted by a NYC writer three days later still at the airport. True story. I still have the ball card of him from that year and one of Gene conley, the other Red Sox player who was with him.

Currently playing;
NFL - Jason Witten... future Hall of Famer. Class on and off the field and does everything the right way. MLB - it pains me... but I do enjoy watching Mike Trout. NHL - my man crush on Jamie Benn remains strong NBA - Dirk. Nuff said.
All-time;
NFL - Roger (Cowboy fans only use one name when referring to our legends). MLB - Pudge (Rangers fans... well - see above) NHL - Mike Modano. He is why I and many others like I in this part of the world are diehard NHL fans (although I also have a soft spot for Derian Hatcher). NBA - until Dirk, it was Hondo. Now - it's Dirk.
