BTW- passed through your neck of the woods Thursday. Went to the UIL 3A D2 championship game in Arlington to watch Gunter play and stopped at Chuy's on I35 for dinner. My wife now knows why I never go down 35E to Dallas. Pretty well broke her of that ever again. Their Panchos nachos are very good. One of our favorite places anywhere. We've spent plenty of time in the Denton location. Also spent plenty of time at the original one on Barton Springs in Austin. |

Went to my grandson's basketball game last night (team was 9-8 and 0-1 in District going into the game). He is a white left offensive guard from HS football playing basketball and he plays basketball like a left offensive guard from HS football. Can't shoot for shit but sets picks and screens well, uses his rear end to clear out the paint and dives for every loose ball there is. No one outworks him. But make no mistake - he is not a leaper nor a scorer. Has not scored double digit points this season. Period. Had 8 points total going into the game.
So... last night the little local TV station has a camera guy there getting some footage for the 10 PM News. They usually get a few shots from the girls games, followed by the boys, then scurry off to the nearest gym to get a few more, then another... until they have footage to do their high school basketball coverage. We win the tip, ball is passed down into the paint, grandson makes a quick fake, the defensive guy goes flying by, and grandson steps in and makes his shot off the glass. Camera man is on the baseline. I text my grandson's mom and grandma and tell them to watch the sports tonight because they might get to see him on TV.
So - the 10 PM news uses footage from the game and calls him out for making a "shake and bake" move to the basket. Problem is - the footage is of the black freshman wunderkind (who is going to be a beast the next few years) from the next offensive series. Nonetheless - my grandson now has a new nick name.
"Shake And Bake".
They won. He now has double digits for the season. 10 total.
Small town America.
