A Cubs fan rant abut Cubs fans.
My favorite shirt during the summer months is a Cubbie-blue #23 Sandberg tee; it fits me perfectly and is nice and light for the hot Chicago sun. Wearing it around town one would think not much criticism would be directed at it apart from the hoard of White Sox fans, but Chicago remains perhaps the worst place to be a Cub fan. That is because Cub fans themselves are the worst fans in sports, and in Chicago they come in droves.

The next three @pirates, 3 vs Cubs, 4 @giants. They get a day off before the Rockies series before they have 3 more @cubs. 3 vs the Reds who have won the last 2 series against the Cards and then finish the season with 3 agains the Pirares.
Brutal September. There will be dicks kicked in just not sure whose.

PITTSBURGH -- It's one of those meaningful series in September with playoff implications that the baseball world will be watching.
But when the St. Louis Cardinals open a three-game set with a Labor Day matinee against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park, neither team will exactly come steaming into the game.
St. Louis, at least, will be coming off a win. The Cardinals had lost three in a row but avoided a sweep at Cincinnati with a 5-2 win Sunday.
Pittsburgh has lost a season-worst six games in a row and has been shut out in three of those games, including a 10-0 loss at home Sunday against Milwaukee, which swept a weekend series.

I'll tell you a fan base that will get nervous as soon as the playoffs begin...
The Cubs fans.
The Tigers have only one World Championship to show since I celebrated as a very young boy in 1968.
That was 1984, the year that they got off to 35-5. I never sweated so much as from that point on in the rest of that season. If they had blown it after that start, Good God...
Similar this year with the Cubs. Especially in the expanded modern playoff format. It just takes a couple poorly played or pitched games and you can be knocked out.
No question that they are the best team in MLB this year. Doesn't guarantee they get the hardware.

Great attitude lemi. Mine in '84 was "bag of nerves" but once they were up by over 10 games in September I just relaxed and enjoyed it. |
