CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Marlins are "closing in" on a 13-year, $325 million contract extension with Giancarlo Stanton. Heyman says the contract will contain both an opt-out and a no-trade clause. Most scoffed when president of baseball operations Michael Hill said earlier this month that he hoped to ink Stanton to a long-term extension before the Winter Meetings, but owner Jeffrey Loria has opened up the pocketbook to make it happen. Stanton surely would prefer to be on a team with more stability, but he's protected himself with an opt-out clause and got a record deal in the process. The contract buys out his final two years of arbitration and first 11 years of free agency. Dumb teams doing dumb things. Horrible deal But great for Giancarlo

325 million would buy you canada...right? Should buy you at least half the Marlins. They should just offer Stanton half of the team ownership interest. The Opt out clause is interesting. I wonder if the contract is front loaded or back loaded. If its front loaded, depending on where the opt out is. It might curtail incentive to use the opt out. If its back loaded.. the opt out probably doesn't mean much.

"Signing a guy to a contract means that you will not trade him." If he signs that deal, the Marlins will be dying to get out of it within 5 years.

Here we go
Let the "Marlins signed Stanton only to trade him to the Red Sox" backpeddling idiots begin
"Maybe I was wrong" just doesn't work

"Signing a guy to a contract means that you will not trade him." Well. It would be dumb..because that contract hurts his trade value. Of course they could trade him down the road...but it would be stupid if they are intending on trading him this off-season.

Yeah.....I'm going to enjoy watching dumb teams do dumb things......(Panda, etc.)
not sure this one qualifies........its ridiculous money...but if you are going to overpay.....doing it on a 24 yr old everyday power hitter is a good place to do it....
they should have done it 2 years ago, (for half the price) when he had a .969 OPS as a 22 yr old....a year after he had an .896 OPS as a 21 yr old......and had 71 HRs in those 2 years.....

I dunno man. Your buying out 2 arb yrs there to protect your org. And what are they getting out of it? 8-10 years of praying he dont shred his knee or shoulder. Etc. That deal sucks. At this point id wait another yr or even both and see if it even makes sense then

Angel's brass >> Marlin's brass. yeah....you got to take your risk a year too early.....if you are wrong, it costs you less. you get them when they are still making 800K....at 23........then throwing 85 mil over 7 years. they are much more temped to take that, than they are when they are already making 6.5 mil in arbitration and have their house and cars etc.....

Related. The Marlins spent just over $ 45 mil last year FOR THEIR WHOLE TEAM. That is going to jump up a tic or two.....

I think the Reyes deal to the Blue Jays pissed him off at the time and wasn't willing to negotiate and wanted nothing to do with the Marlins long term.

Cubs bet on Rizzo and Castro....... jury still out on both....but at the minimum now......they are decent contracts.....if these guys get a little better, they will be outright steals. they will do the same thing to the batch of guys coming up....

And I was sold on Castro, and not Rizzo, for some reason going into this year. Now, i'm sold on Rizzo, but not so much Castro. He seems to only be interested in playing the game sometimes, and I would not want a player like that on any team of mine. I do think the talent is there, but, not so much the drive and motivation.

I'm with you here. Right up to the point that I think of the $ 5 mil he got last year. For that amt, there are no excuses.
