Which hits the nail on the head and is my point. GM's sign/trade for players based on past performance or potential. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not. Cherington's moves worked out last year. This year, not so much. He's no more a bum this year than a genius last. Chappee likes to throw names of Yankee "busts" that Cashman should be held accountable for. Like he should know Beltran would have elbow chips or Tanaka (who he looked like a genius for signing before his injury) would hurt his arm. No different for Cherington who re-signed Napoli (based on last year) underperforming or signing Perzynski or Victorino getting hurt etc. No. You should only sign for what your future expectation is for the player. Yes track record is a part of it, but any decision to sign a player goes way beyond surface numbers these days. You have countless studies about the age curve overall and for each posistion. Truely every single contract a GM sign is just a calculated gamble. Because you can't predict what they will do. You can only go by your methods, scouting reports, analysis, common sense, and numbers to try and get the best bang for your buck. I don't think you can excuse a signing for someone as old as Beltran. Signing anyone that age, regardless of track record is higher risk.. I wouldn't consider the McCann signing a bad one. He is still young enough and his value comes a lot from his work behind the plate anyways. You really shouldn't expect a pull hitting catcher to hit for average. The Power should still be around and that is precisely why they signed him. Because his dead pull caters to Yankee Stadium.. I said basically the same thing in a lot less words.

Final game of the season: Yankees win and they're in the playoffs. THEN does Girardi bat Jeter 8th?

Of course, more goes into it but they are getting a contract based on their track record with the expectation of it being repeated or improved upon and of course, the going price in the market. And it's all a crapshoot. As for Beltran, the Yanks needed offense. Their choices were few. They only wanted him for two years. They had to up it to three to keep him from signing elsewhere. Chances weren't good he'd finish it injury free but I don't think anyone could have predicted he'd have elbow bone chips. I think Ken Singleton was the last OF I remember getting DL'd with that....McCann was the best available catcher. The Yanks couldn't go through another year of Stewart/Cervelli/Romine. Won't fault Cashman for that signing.

Wow. Teixeira hit a triple. Guy can't score from second on a double. That must have been some hit.

Yankees had the Pavano disaster, but no one ever brings up Theo signing Clement He was terrible with free agents!! Renteria, Lugo, Smoltz, Penny, Crawford etc..., But he was great at the development side. Best guy to rebuild a farm system.

Trade him while he's hot! Trade deadline be damned!
A big game for Middlebrooks, who has been dreadful at the plate since returning from a fractured index finger. Dating back to August 1, Middlebrooks compiled a .427 OPS in 115 plate appearances entering Thursday. On the season, he's slashing .189/.257/.270.
