So, was there anyone happier last night (finally) when the games ends then Cubs catcher Jeff Baker? After he pitched a scoreless 16th inning, he scored the winning run in the bottom of half of the inning, thus ending the lost game in Cubs history. you mean longest game? But that reminds me of what I was thinking when the Sox were getting pummeled 14-1 to the Jays...They should have let Holt catch an inning and pitch an inning...only 2 positions he hasn't played this season

Though it is otherwise nice, close and convienient, proof that parking at Fenway is not the best idea. Melky Cabrera did that I think

Vaya con dios Eric Chavez
By all accounts, Eric Chavez is a great guy. He was also a great ballplayer before injuries derailed his career, causing him to play just 212 games between 2007 and 2011.
Chavez, 36, announced his retirement Wednesday after 17 seasons in the big leagues, and he did so with one final classy gesture. He left $1 million on the table, which the Arizona Diamondbacks would have owed him had he just sat on the disabled list the rest of the season. He played 44 games for the D-backs in 2014 until a knee injury sidelined him. Chavez was due the rest of the $3.5 million contract he signed in the offseason, but he told CBS Sports' Jon Heyman that his conscience wouldn't let him take the money and not play.
Chavez said he wouldn't have felt right taking money for sitting his last days on the disabled list with the knee injury that finally felled him, years after refining his swing and reinventing himself as one of baseball's best bench players. He enjoyed his last years as a role player on Yankees teams filled with big names, then later took less to play and stay in Arizona, where the family man makes his home. While he was blessed with outsized talent and movie-star looks, it served him well to be just off the cusp of the limelight, first as a star of a small-market team and later a bench player with that storied team in New York.
"I'm very lucky," Chavez said. "I just enjoyed competing and being on the field. There's nothing like winning at the major-league level."
Chavez made $83 million during his big-league career, but he probably could have had more. He was one of the few homegrown Oakland Athletics stars of the early 2000s to sign an extension there for less money than he could have gotten as a free agent.
He finishes his career with 260 homers and 902 RBIs. Chavez hit .268/.342/.475 and won six gold gloves for his play at third base. Injuries took over the narrative of Chavez's career so much that it might be hard to remember how good he was during his younger years with the Oakland Athletics.

Well,................................
I don't think anyone saw this coming. I know there was nothing on the local sportstalk here that was even hinting at anything like this. And, when you factor in the part about Lester being a rental here, I think the Sox did VERY well here.
In a related note, if I were Jason Hammels, I would be pretty worried about right now.....
We didn’t see this coming: WEEI’s Alex Speier reports that the Oaland Athletics have acquired Jon Lester and outfielder Jonny Gomes from the Red Sox for Yoenis Cespedes.
This makes the third front line starting pitcher added to the A’s rotation in less than a month, with Lester joining Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel who came to Oakland from Chicago at the beginning of July. Along with Sonny Gray, this gives the A’s perhaps the best starting rotation in the American League. Possibly in all of baseball. It certainly signals that the A’s are going for it without hesitation or pause in 2014.
For the Red Sox: a big problem — production in the outfield — is solved. They didn’t get the sorts of prospects everyone expected they’d get. But in Cespedes they received one of the most powerful hitters in the game who is under team control through 2015. And of course the Red Sox have the means to extend Cespedes if they like what they see from him over the next year and a half. It is worth wondering if his batting line — already good on the power side, even if lacking in the on-base side of things — improves in a more hitter-friendly park like Fenway.
We’ll have much more on the fallout from this monster deal, including what it means for Boston, for Oakland and for the rest of baseball as the day goes on.

There's more. 9:14am: The Red Sox are sending under $1MM to the A’s in the trade, tweets Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Meanwhile, J.J. Cooper of Baseball America tweets that the value of the Competitive Balance pick that Boston receives will be roughly $800K. 8:54am: Passan tweets that Oakland is also sending a competitive balance draft pick to the Red Sox in the trade, and Boston is sending cash to Oakland. The A’s landed the second pick in Comp Round B in last week’s lottery.

An otherwise minor move that helps compliment and complete the larger move from the A's today.
10:01am: Sam Fuld is heading back to the A’s in the trade, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN (on Twitter). Interestingly, the Twins claimed Fuld off waivers from Oakland earlier this year when he was designated for assignment. Presumably, he can form some form of platoon with the newly acquired Jonny Gomes in order to fill in for the now-departed Yoenis Cespedes.
9:53am: The Twins have acquired lefty Tommy Milone from the A’s, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link).
From a fantasy perspective, Milone once again become fantasy relevant, and now a decent pickup going forward. On the other end, Sam Fuld was putting up decent enough numbers to have him be fantasy relevant, as a 4th or 5th OF guy. Now that he is headed for a platoon it seems, any value he may have had is now gone.

Still dont know what I think about this Lester trade, wasnt what I was expecting I think it ends up being a net win for the Sox. They get Cespedes to be the power hitting OF they need, and, he is under contract through next year, unlike Lester, who is just a 2 month rental.

Dont know who this guy is but thought it was interesting. I do not know who the Tweeter is either. However, he is probably onto something. As such, look for Lackey to be moved today. Maybe to the Royals?

Joe Kelly and Allen Craig to Boston for Lackey.
Not sure who one this one, as Kelly has been hurt quite a bit this year, and, as Craig's production has plumeted way down from last year to this year. It was due to this that both of the former Cars became kind of spare parts there, making them much easier to part with here.

A little more additional info for this trade - The Red Sox sent veteran starting pitcher John Lackey to the Cardinals along with minor leaguer Corey Littrell and about $1.75MM in cash in exchange for young starter Joe Kelly and outfielder/first baseman Allen Craig. The deal is now official.

Despite the fact that this happens once or twice each year due to trades, I doubt it makes the situation any less awkward.
It's hard to blame the people in the Oakland Athletics promotions department for this, but there's a pretty awkward giveaway scheduled for Saturday. The A's are giving the first 10,000 fans through the gates a free T-shirt of just-departed slugger Yoenis Cespedes.
Instead of a day celebrating the two-time reigning Home Run Derby champ, it'll be like a wake. Cespedes was a popular player, and many A's fans are sad to see him go, despite getting ace Jon Lester from the Red Sox in return. Lester, by the way, will be making his first A's start on Saturday.
The [HASH]Athletics t-shirt featuring a shirtless Cespedes just because a throwback. pic.twitter.com/BIm80yorL1
— Casey Pratt (@caseyprattcsn) July 31, 2014 The A's promotions team couldn't have foreseen, when they were penciling their giveaways on the calendar before the season, that Cespedes wouldn't be around in August. But baseball is surprising, especially in late July.
Now, fans will just have to pretend that "La Potencia" (which translates to "The Power") means something else. Maybe "We'll miss you."
