I've been up and down the inside passage many time on a fishing boat. I've seen orcas as well as belugas and bowheads migrating. Took it for granted at the time because I was young and dumb. But it left a lasting memory. They don't have much time left before they are all gone. We can kinda control what happens in our territorial waters and you Canookers can control what happens in yours. But on the open seas there isn't much we can do about it.

The first time I saw a killer whale live was probably the best as I was about 13/14 and out salmon fishing in a 16' open aluminium boat. A pod of orcas came up on us from behind and one swam right next to the boat and rolled slightly and looked right at us. I was scared as shit (I didn't know much about them at the time) but also just amazed. I also learned a few words from my friend's dad as the fishing was over with new competition. Canada just enacted a law that all boats have to stay 200 meters from a whales. The US has had that in place but we were lagging some reason. I'm happy they corrected it but unless they do something about the disappearing salmon stocks the resident whales are fucked. Maybe the transients can teach them to eat all the fucking seals around here.

PETA and other animal protection organizations are clueless about what a nuisance seals can be when they become over-populated. And they don't understand the damage seals do to marine eco-systems when they are over-populated. Seems there should be a more humane way of exterminating them than clubbing them to death but there will criticism no matter what they do. Sea lions are the worst. They will go up and down a gill net, take one bit out of a salmon and leave the rest of the carcass. It's a prime reason why all salmon boats carry firearms and underwater explosives.

Yeah I think the sea lion population has a lot to do with the severe decline in the chinook. It's also been proven it's responsible for the increase in great white sharks in California. But that's just thinning out the surfers so WGAF.

I always root for the mammal, every time.....unless one of my chickens corners a wood rat in the hen house. I root for the bird in those situations.
This is a really great picture, Canook. I'm sure it has been photoshopped to hell and back but it is still a great shot.
