WHITESBORO - A Whitesboro city employee went to work Monday dressed in blackface and what appeared to be an Afro wig.

Whitesboro City Administrator Michael Marter confirmed Tuesday that code enforcement officer Kenny Schmitz, who is not of African-American descent, did show up for work on Halloween dressed in blackface. Marter said he was unaware of the way Schmitz was dressed until he received a call Monday afternoon after a picture of Marter was posted to Facebook.

"He came to work and when I talked to him, I told him to go 'Wash whatever it is you've got on your face off,' which he did," Marter said. "I told him in the future if he wants to paint his face, he needs to do it green because somebody had taken offense to what he had done."

The picture of Schmitz was posted to the Facebook page of a woman not associated with the city along with the caption "Have you hugged your BORO City spook today?? Kenny u made our day !!"

Marter said he isn't sure who the woman who posted the picture is and believes Schmitz encountered her during his lunch hour Monday.

"All I can say is it's very poor taste and not in keeping with what we expect of our employees," Whitesboro Mayor Dee Welch said. "Why anyone would do it is not within my comprehension. " That's not the world we live in. That's not the world we have in Whitesboro. That's not the way it should be. And I hope that point is made."
