yes but only in the AL East Interesting thing about Tanaka....A lot of pending pitching free agents I would bet, like Lester maybe, would have some good leverage if Tanaka sucked getting $155 million.......By seasons end it may become "You dont deserve as much as Tanaka" you think Dice K is mad? Tanaka is what Dice was supposed to be has he faced any team twice yet?

Down Whats up with Gary Sanchez? With the Mccann signing, whats and where is the future for him? Eventual trade piece for sure? Half joking about him flaming out...but he's not the dominant hitter some thought he'd show...the upper levels are challenging him. SLG% by level A .500 A+ .425 AA .415 bad trend... definitely a trade piece I'd say...a guy that could be the centerpiece in a decent sized acquisition...but the problem is he's at least 2 years away, and the yanks don't have much else in the highly coveted near MLB ready type prospcets...

D, who'd the Yankees pick-up in the draft? Shit, I forgot, they picked-up like 5 free agents... What do they have, like an 8th. rounder?

Tanaka earns 11th win, Yankees beat Toronto 3-1By BEN WALKER (AP Baseball Writer) 7 hours ago NEW YORK (AP) -- Once Masahiro Tanaka overcame that early jolt from Jose Reyes, the Japanese rookie did just fine. Tanaka gave up a home run to Reyes on the first pitch of the game, then earned his major league-high 11th victory as the New York Yankees beat Toronto 3-1 Tuesday night for their 14th straight home win over the Blue Jays. That was the first time Tanaka could remember getting tagged so quickly and said it ''threw me off my rhythm a little bit.'' ''Overall, I think my stuff wasn't really there,'' he said through a translator. Even so, Tanaka (11-1) struck out 10 in six innings and left with an AL-best 1.99 ERA. The right-hander has made 14 starts this season - he's gone at least six innings in every outing and never permitted more than three earned runs. ''What he's done is remarkable,'' Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. ''He wins.'' Brett Gardner hit a two-run homer off the right-field foul pole and the Yankees sent the AL East leaders to their seventh loss in 10 games. Tanaka made his big league debut April 4 at Toronto and Melky Cabrera hit a leadoff home run on the third pitch. Reyes provided an even faster start with a drive into the lower deck in right, and slapped his hands as he rounded first. ''I made up my mind before the game that I was going to swing at the first pitch,'' he said. ''You don't want to face Tanaka with two strikes.'' Said Girardi: ''He just threw a pitch right down the middle and up. Reyes knew what to do.'' ''Reyes is familiar with this ballpark,'' he said. ''He went to the short part of the park.'' Cabrera followed with a liner between Tanaka's legs that knocked off the pitcher's glove. But Tanaka scrambled to retrieve the ball behind the mound and threw out Cabrera, and never again allowed a runner past second. Tanaka gave up five hits and walked two in moving ahead of Toronto's Mark Buehrle for the most wins in the majors. Buehrle starts Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium in the middle game of the three-game series. The Blue Jays were the second team to face Tanaka twice. He blanked the Chicago Cubs for eight innings in April before they handed him his only loss a month later. Dellin Betances worked two innings and David Robertson closed for his 17th save in 19 tries. New York pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts and became the latest staff to slow down the Blue Jays, limited to 24 runs in their last 11 games. Pitching about 50 miles from his Long Island hometown, Blue Jays rookie Marcus Stroman (3-2) threw 98 pitches in 3 2-3 innings on a sticky night. Gardner gave him a workout right away, grounding out in a 12-pitch at-bat to lead off the first. Kelly Johnson doubled in the third for the Yankees' first hit and Gardner pulled a go-ahead home run. Derek Jeter opened the fifth with his second hit of the game and scored his 1,900th run on a single by Mark Teixeira. Jeter is 10th on the career runs list, 19 behind longtime teammate Alex Rodriguez. sports.yahoo.com/news/tanaka-earns-11th-win-yankees-022938853--mlb.html

Yankees put Tanaka on DL with elbow inflammation8 hours ago AP - Sports CLEVELAND (AP) -- Masahiro Tanaka was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, perhaps the biggest blow yet to the New York Yankees' battered rotation. The rookie sensation from Japan is sidelined with inflammation in his right elbow. He had an MRI in New York and then was headed to Seattle to be examined by Dr. Christopher Ahmad, the team's head physician. Ahmad is in Seattle for a conference. Yankees manager Joe Girardi acknowledged he's concerned about Tanaka's prognosis. ''You're always worried when you have a guy go back for an elbow MRI,'' he said. ''It would be a big loss. Anytime you lose a starting pitcher, they're hard to replace. And what he's done for us, the innings and the wins and the quality of starts, it's hard to replace.'' The Yankees, who have also lost pitchers CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda and Ivan Nova to injuries, are 46-44 and trail first-place Baltimore by three games in the AL East. Tanaka allowed five runs and 10 hits - both career highs - over 6 2-3 innings in a 5-3 loss to the Indians on Tuesday night. The All-Star is 12-4 with a 2.51 ERA in 18 starts, but has lost three of his past four outings. ''It goes without saying how important he's been for us,'' Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter said. ''He's been our go-to guy.'' The Yankees signed the 25-year-old Tanaka to a $155 million, seven-year contract in January after he had a standout career in Japan. New York also paid $20 million to his Japanese team, the Rakuten Golden Eagles, for his rights. Tanaka began the season 11-1 with a 1.99 ERA, but hasn't been as effective in his past four starts, going 1-3 with a 4.25 ERA. He's allowed eight home runs in his last five games, including two on Tuesday, a two-run shot in the sixth by Nick Swisher that put Cleveland ahead and a solo drive by Michael Brantley in the seventh. Girardi didn't notice any sign that something was bothering Tanaka during the game. ''There wasn't anything that led us to believe there was anything wrong,'' Girardi said. ''He told the trainers that he just felt some soreness, so we felt it was best to send him back and have an MRI. It's the first time he's complained (of it).'' Tanaka's past two starts came on four days' rest, the regular amount for major league pitchers. He pitched once a week in Japan. Tanaka has anchored a shaky Yankees rotation. Sabathia might need season-ending knee surgery, and Nova had Tommy John surgery and won't pitch again until next season. The Yankees are 13-5 in games Tanaka has started. He has recorded 135 strikeouts and walked 19 in 129 1-3 innings. The right-hander has allowed 111 hits and opponents are batting .231 against him. He has given up 15 home runs. ''You just hope and pray that we get good news and it's something minor,'' outfielder Brett Gardner said. ''I worry about anybody, but he's pretty special.'' Tanaka was scheduled to start Sunday against Baltimore, the final game before the All-Star break. Girardi said no decision has been made on who will take Tanaka's spot. sports.yahoo.com/news/yankees-tanaka-mri-arm-200956411--mlb.html

You can make a pretty strong argument that the five best starting pitchers in the Yankees organization are on the disabled list right now. Masahiro Tanaka (elbow), CC Sabathia (knee), Ivan Nova (elbow), Michael Pineda (shoulder) and David Phelps (elbow) are all hurt, with Sabathia and Nova done for the season following surgery.
When the Yankees lost Tanaka to a partially torn elbow ligament last month, most assumed that would be it. That would be the straw that broke the camel's back and ended New York's postseason chances. Instead, the team has gone 15-10 since Tanaka got hurt, climbing from 3.5 games back of a wild-card spot to only a half-game back, pending the outcome of Thursday night's games.
How have they done it? For starters, Brian Cashman aggressively pursued what he called "incremental upgrades" at the trade deadline, including Chase Headley, Brandon McCarthy, Martin Prado and Stephen Drew. Cashman acquired those players at little cost, and according to Eno Sarris of Sports on Earth, the Yankees added more projected WAR (2.0) than any other team at the deadline (WAR coming in vs. WAR going out). More than the Athletics with Jon Lester or the Tigers with David Price. Incremental upgrades add up quick.
The main reason the Yankees have managed to hang around post-Tanaka is the work of their patchwork rotation. And make no mistake, it is definitely a patchwork staff. The only holdover from the Opening Day rotation is the veteran Hiroki Kuroda. McCarthy came over at the trade deadline, Shane Greene was called up after 66 1/3 innings at Triple-A (4.61 ERA), and Chris Capuano was plucked off the scrap heap. Esmil Rogers, Friday's starter, was claimed off waivers last week.
Before the Tanaka injury, New York's rotation owned a 4.08 ERA and a 3.90 FIP. That's with Tanaka, remember. Since the ace got hurt, the rotation has a 3.46 ERA and a 3.34 FIP in 25 games. Look at these individual performances:
•McCarthy: 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA in five starts since the trade. •Kuroda: 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA in five starts since Tanaka got hurt. •Capuano: 0-1 with a 2.84 ERA in three starts since joining the team. •Greene: 3-1 with a 2.91 ERA in six starts since being called up.
The Yankees just won three of four against the Tigers with this foursome collectively outpitching Max Scherzer, Price, Justin Verlander and Rick Porcello. New York's starters allowed three earned runs in 27 1/3 innings in the series compared to nine earned runs in 29 2/3 innings for Detroit's starters.
Will this last? Probably not. Capuano has a long track record in the show and it suggests he won't continue pitching to a sub-3.00 ERA. Same with McCarthy sitting near a 2.00 ERA. Greene lacks the track record but it seems unlikely he'll continue at this pace. That's fine though. This is stuff that has already happened. It's in the books and it can't be taken away.
Pineda will make his second Triple-A rehab start on Friday and is expected to jump back into the rotation next week, replacing Rogers who is temporarily replacing Phelps. Tanaka started a throwing program earlier this week and the team hopes he can return in September. Phelps is due back in about three weeks. Cashman continues to look for starting pitchers on the trade market. There is some help on the way.
Nothing about the Yankees says they should be in the race for a postseason spot right now. Not their run differential (-23), not the names in their rotation, and not all the injuries they've piled up. And yet, there they are, right on the cusp of a wild-card spot and within shouting distance of the Orioles for the top spot in the AL East.
The Yankees have a huge payroll and that certainly helps, but their rotation includes anything but big money players at the moment. Cashman & Co. has filled out the staff on the fly and on the cheap amid the injuries, and those guys have actually been better than the pitchers who opened the year in the rotation.

What a win
Was wondering when Ned Yost would yank Shields
Down 6-1, potential playoff team, seems you're just risking injury
Man if Pineda ever stayed healthy, that guy is awesome
3 huge games coming up, should know by Sunday what the Yankees are
And Boomstick called

I sure hope Ibanez gets his third start in a row over a hot hitting Willingham

Struggling to score runs and he hasn't tried that approach once this season, even on off Jeter days.
